Short answer: Mafia III: Definitive Edition is primarily the original Mafia III packaged with its three story expansions and two bonus packs. It is not a ground-up remake of the 2016 game. A separate October 2026 update adds 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while Steam receives a quality-of-life patch; those current-generation changes should not be confused with the 2020 Definitive Edition bundle.
What you receive depends on your platform, the edition you originally bought, and whether you are asking about the 2020 package or the newer 2026 versions. The guide below separates those changes so you can identify the right release and understand upgrade and save-transfer limitations.

At a glance: original game versus Definitive Edition
| Comparison point | Original Mafia III | Mafia III: Definitive Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Base game | Mafia III | The same core Mafia III game |
| Story expansions | Not included in the Standard Edition | Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times |
| Bonus packs | Varied by the original purchase tier; the Standard Edition included Family Kick-Back pre-order content | Family Kick-Back Pack and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack |
| 2020 edition status | Standalone original release | A complete-content re-introduction, not a ground-up remake |
| 2026 console version | Original-generation PS4 or Xbox One release | PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions with 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements |
| 2026 Steam change | Existing Steam version before the patch | Quality-of-life update covering progression blockers, crashes, achievements, behavior, visuals, interface, and stability |
The key distinction is scope. In 2020, “Definitive Edition” described a content-complete package. In October 2026, the name also appears in connection with current-generation console releases and a Steam update. Those are related releases, but they are not the same change.

What the 2020 Definitive Edition actually includes
The Steam product description identifies six components in the package: the main game, three story DLCs, and two bonus packs. They are bundled together rather than sold as a separate season-pass purchase.

The main game
The base product remains Mafia III. The Definitive Edition does not replace the campaign with a newly built version or present a different protagonist and setting. It is the original game as the foundation of the package.
Three story expansions
- Faster, Baby!
- Stones Unturned
- Sign of the Times
These are the three named story expansions listed for the Definitive Edition. The listing confirms their inclusion; it does not establish that the campaigns were rebuilt or that their missions were substantially redesigned for this edition.
Two bonus packs
- Family Kick-Back Pack
- Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack
The Family Kick-Back Pack and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack are part of the bundled product. Their presence is separate from the original retail tier in which some buyers received Family Kick-Back content as pre-order material.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs Mafia III: Definitive Edition a remake or a remaster?
Neither term accurately captures the 2020 release. 2K described it as a “re-introduction,” while using “built-from-the-ground-up” for the first Mafia remake in the same period. That wording supports treating Mafia III: Definitive Edition as a complete-edition repackage, not as a ground-up remake of Mafia III.
In practical terms, do not buy the Definitive Edition expecting a newly authored campaign, a wholly rebuilt animation system, or a separately developed visual remake. The product descriptions establish the bundled content, but they do not document a specific set of 2020 graphics, animation, or gameplay overhauls. Claims that every texture, mission, or combat system was remade go beyond what the official descriptions establish.
The 2026 console release is a different matter. It is described as bringing 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Those are current-generation enhancements, not evidence that the 2020 edition was itself a remake.
How the original purchase editions differed
“The original” was not one identical retail SKU. 2K’s support material lists several launch-era purchase tiers, and those differences explain why two owners of the original Mafia III may have started with different extras.

|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | Base game, Family Kick-Back pre-order content, and a collectible New Bordeaux map | The Definitive Edition adds the three story DLCs and both listed bonus packs as a single package. |
| Digital Deluxe | Base game plus the Season Pass | The Season Pass represented the route to the additional story content; the Definitive Edition presents that content directly in the bundle. |
| Collector’s Edition | Season Pass, art book, replica dog tags, coasters, art prints, and two vinyl soundtrack records | These physical collectibles were launch-edition merchandise, not new Definitive Edition game content. |
| Deep Cuts Edition | Physical memorabilia and a turntable | The memorabilia and turntable were part of that original physical package, not an upgrade feature of the Definitive Edition. |
The comparison is therefore not simply “old disc versus new disc.” A Standard Edition owner may be missing the story expansions, while a Digital Deluxe owner may already own the relevant season-pass content. Collector’s and Deep Cuts buyers may also own physical items that no digital or standard Definitive Edition listing replaces.
What changed for existing owners in 2020?
At launch in 2020, 2K said existing owners on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam would receive the Definitive Edition upgrade at no additional cost. That was a historical launch entitlement, not a promise that every account, disc, storefront, or later-generation purchase will always receive the same treatment.
If you owned Mafia III on one of those platforms when the 2020 edition launched, the relevant question was whether your account or eligible copy was recognized for the upgrade. The announcement did not establish a universal entitlement across every platform generation, region, physical-disc condition, or future storefront policy. For a current purchase, check the store page attached to your platform and the edition name shown in your library rather than assuming that the 2020 policy still determines a new transaction.
What changed in October 2026?
2K’s October 2026 anniversary announcement adds a separate current-generation layer. Mafia III: Definitive Edition is available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. Steam receives a quality-of-life update rather than a new console generation.
PlayStation 5
Owners of a physical or digital PS4 copy are described as eligible for the PS5 digital version. The announcement also states that PS4 saves do not transfer to the PS5 version. Eligibility is therefore distinct from save continuity: a qualifying owner may receive the newer version but still need to start the campaign again on that version.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox One digital owners are described as eligible for the Xbox Series X|S digital version. Xbox One physical owners are excluded from the upgrade terms stated in the announcement. The announcement also says Xbox One saves do not transfer to the corresponding Series X|S version.
Steam
The Steam change is described as a quality-of-life update. Its listed areas include mission-progression blockers, crashes, achievement tracking, non-player-character and companion behavior, and other gameplay, stability, visual, and interface issues. The announcement describes the intended areas of the patch; it is not an independent performance test and does not provide a single frame-rate figure for every PC configuration.
| Platform path | 2026 change | Eligibility or continuity warning |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 to PS5 | PS5 version with 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements | PS4 physical and digital owners are described as eligible; PS4 saves do not transfer. |
| Xbox One digital to Series X|S | Series X|S version with 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements | Xbox One digital owners are described as eligible; Xbox One physical owners are excluded; saves do not transfer. |
| Steam | Quality-of-life patch addressing progression, crashes, achievements, behavior, visuals, interface, and stability | The announcement does not describe this as a separate console-generation product. |
These terms make the date important. A sentence such as “Definitive Edition runs at 60 FPS” is incomplete unless it specifies the 2026 PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. The 2020 package itself should be understood first as the bundled-content release.

What you are actually buying
The value question is mainly about content and platform access, not a different campaign. A new buyer who wants every named story component gets the base game, all three expansions, and both bonus packs in one listing. That avoids having to identify a Standard Edition copy, locate a separate Season Pass, and check whether each DLC license is attached to the same account.
An existing Digital Deluxe owner may already have the Season Pass, so buying another copy can duplicate licenses rather than add a new story. A Standard Edition owner should compare the library’s installed or owned add-ons before paying again. The exact current price, stock status, physical-versus-digital format, and affiliate availability can change by store and platform; verify the live listing instead of relying on an old launch price.
For a disc purchase, read the platform line carefully. A PS4 case and an Xbox One case do not automatically establish eligibility for a current-generation version, and the 2026 Xbox terms specifically exclude Xbox One physical owners from the stated Series X|S upgrade. Digital ownership is also platform-specific: a PlayStation entitlement does not become an Xbox or Steam license.
How the DLC affects the playthrough
The three expansions are separate named story content within the complete package. Their inclusion means the Definitive Edition is broader than the original Standard Edition even though the underlying Mafia III campaign remains the same foundation. If you are comparing screenshots, reviews, or save files, identify whether a statement refers to the base campaign or one of these expansions; “the game” can otherwise mean different amounts of content.
The bonus packs are different from the story expansions. They are listed as add-on packs, while Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times are the narrative DLC entries. Treating all five additions as interchangeable can make an edition comparison misleading. The safe description is “three story DLCs plus two bonus packs.”
Which version should you choose?
You have never owned Mafia III
Choose the Definitive Edition if you want the base game and all three named story expansions in one purchase. It is the clearest way to obtain the complete listed game content without separately matching a base copy to a season pass or DLC licenses.
Rank #2
You own the original Standard Edition
Compare the content shown in your platform library with the Definitive Edition listing. The meaningful addition is the three story DLCs and the Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack, alongside the bundled Family Kick-Back Pack. Your original New Bordeaux map is a physical collectible and does not change the digital game entitlement.
You own Digital Deluxe
Your original purchase included the Season Pass, so the practical difference may be the storefront’s way of labeling the complete package rather than an entirely new game. Confirm which DLC licenses are already attached to your account before buying anything again.

Keep the physical memorabilia in your comparison. The Definitive Edition is a game-content package; it does not replace the art book, records, replica items, coasters, prints, memorabilia, or turntable listed for those launch editions.
You are moving to a current-generation console
Use the 2026 platform rules, not the 2020 owner-upgrade statement. PS4 and Xbox One save files are specifically described as non-transferable to the corresponding new versions, and Xbox One physical owners are excluded from the stated Series X|S upgrade path.
You are deciding between Steam and console
On Steam, the relevant 2026 change is a quality-of-life update to the existing PC release. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the announcement identifies 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. The choice should therefore account for platform ownership, save continuity, and whether you need a new console version—not just the word “Definitive.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common misunderstandings to avoid
- “Definitive” means remake. The 2020 edition is described as a re-introduction and a bundled release, not a ground-up remake.
- The 2020 bundle and 2026 upgrade are the same change. The bundle dates from 2020; the 60 FPS console versions and Steam quality-of-life patch are announced for October 2026.
- Every original owner has the same upgrade path. The 2020 no-cost upgrade statement was tied to existing PS4, Xbox One, and Steam owners at launch. The 2026 terms distinguish digital from physical Xbox One ownership.
- Your old save will follow you automatically. The 2026 announcement says PS4 and Xbox One saves do not transfer to the corresponding current-generation versions.
- Collector’s extras are part of every Definitive Edition copy. The art book, records, replica items, coasters, prints, memorabilia, and turntable belonged to specific original physical tiers.
- A frame-rate claim applies to every platform. The 60 FPS statement is tied to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions announced in 2026.
- Owning a season pass always means a new copy is free. The Season Pass is content entitlement; current-generation eligibility is governed by the platform-specific 2026 terms.
- A physical disc and a digital license are interchangeable. The stated Xbox upgrade excludes Xbox One physical owners, demonstrating why format matters.
A practical checklist before buying or upgrading
- Identify your current platform: PS4, Xbox One, Steam, PS5, or Xbox Series X|S.
- Check whether your existing copy is physical or digital, especially on Xbox One.
- Open your library or the store listing and verify whether the three story DLCs are already licensed.
- Decide whether you need only the 2020 complete-content package or the 2026 current-generation version.
- Back up or finish any important PS4 or Xbox One save before moving platforms, because the announced current-generation versions do not import those saves.
- For a physical purchase, verify the exact platform printed on the listing or case; a PS4 or Xbox One copy is not automatically the same entitlement as a PS5 or Series X|S version.
- Check the edition name and included items at checkout. “Definitive Edition” should be accompanied by the three named story DLCs and two named bonus packs in the product details.
- If you are buying a used copy, confirm that any promised bonus content is actually represented by the included platform entitlement; launch-era pre-order material and later digital licenses may not be identical.
FAQ
Is Mafia III: Definitive Edition different from the original?
Yes, mainly in what is included. It packages the original Mafia III with Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, Sign of the Times, the Family Kick-Back Pack, and the Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack. It is not presented as a ground-up remake.
Does Definitive Edition include all the DLC?
It includes the three story DLCs named in the product listing plus the two listed bonus packs. That is the complete set identified for this package.
Was the 2020 edition a remaster?
2K called it a “re-introduction” and described it as a bundled release. The official wording does not establish a separate remaster-style overhaul of graphics, animation, or gameplay.
Did original owners get it free?
At the 2020 launch, 2K said existing PS4, Xbox One, and Steam owners would be upgraded at no additional cost. That historical statement should not be treated as a blanket promise for every later purchase or platform transition.
Do PS4 saves transfer to PS5?
No. The October 2026 announcement says PS4 saves do not transfer to the PS5 version.
Do Xbox One saves transfer to Xbox Series X|S?
No. The announcement says Xbox One saves do not transfer to the corresponding Series X|S version.
Can an Xbox One physical owner claim the Series X|S version?
Not under the eligibility terms stated in the October 2026 announcement. Those terms describe Xbox One digital owners as eligible and exclude Xbox One physical owners.
Does the Steam version run at 60 FPS after the 2026 change?
The announcement describes a Steam quality-of-life update, not a universal 60 FPS specification. The 60 FPS statement is attached to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.
Are the Collector’s Edition records and turntable included?
No. Those were physical extras in specific original purchase tiers. The Definitive Edition is a game-content package and does not replace that merchandise.
Should a Digital Deluxe owner buy Definitive Edition?
Usually, first check your account. Digital Deluxe included the Season Pass, so you may already own the relevant story content. Buy again only if you need a different platform or a current-generation entitlement and the store confirms that requirement.
Bottom line for the comparison
Mafia III: Definitive Edition changed the ownership package more than it changed the game itself: it put Mafia III, Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, Sign of the Times, the Family Kick-Back Pack, and the Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack together. The 2020 release should not be described as a ground-up remake. The separate October 2026 update adds 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and a broad quality-of-life patch on Steam, with platform-specific eligibility rules and no save transfer from PS4 or Xbox One.
