Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake
2K describes Mafia: Definitive Edition as a comprehensive, built-from-the-ground-up remake of the original game. The remake uses an updated script, expanded character backstories, additional cutscenes, new gameplay sequences, and a modern presentation. It still tells Tommy Angelo’s story, but it is not simply the 2002 release with a higher resolution.
The setting is 1930s Lost Heaven. Tommy begins as a taxi driver and becomes involved with organized crime; the precise events and character relationships are presented through the remake’s revised narrative. The important point for a first-time player is that this is the beginning of the main Mafia saga’s historical progression.
Mafia III: Definitive Edition is the complete Mafia III package
Mafia III: Definitive Edition is described by 2K as a re-introduction of the original third game rather than a ground-up remake. Its package includes the main Mafia III campaign, the three story expansions Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times, plus the Family Kick-Back Pack and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack.

Pick Lincoln’s story when the later era is the appeal
Lincoln’s campaign moves the series into 1968 New Bordeaux and gives you a different protagonist, historical moment, and motivation. Choose it first if that setting and the revenge premise are what made you interested in the series. Starting here does not prevent you from returning to Tommy’s story later; you will simply experience the trilogy’s eras out of chronological order.

2K’s published descriptions do not prescribe a required play order, rank one campaign as better, or provide player-preference data. They also do not establish that either plot is incomprehensible without the other. Treat the order as a preference decision, not a continuity requirement.

If you are choosing between just these releases, there is no required sequence. Start with Mafia: Definitive Edition for the original-story route or Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Lincoln’s later revenge campaign. You can play the other one afterward without needing a special recap order.

Mafia: Definitive Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
2K Support’s October 8, 2026 update says the same 2020 game launched on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on August 14, 2026, with 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. The wording describes a current-generation version of the existing game, not a second remake.
Upgrade eligibility depends on how and when you bought it:
- Owners of a PS4 disc need a PS5 with a disc drive, must keep the disc inserted while playing, and remain subject to regional disc compatibility.
- PS Plus monthly-game claims do not qualify for the PS5 upgrade under the stated terms.
- Xbox digital owners receive the Series X|S version under the conditions set out in 2K Support’s notice.
- Purchases made on or after August 14, 2026 are described as including the cross-generation edition.
Because these entitlements can change, check the current 2K Support notice and the store listing for your territory before buying or assuming an upgrade.

Confusing a DLC bundle with a separate story campaign
The three story expansions and two bonus packs are included in Mafia III: Definitive Edition. They expand the third game’s package; they do not turn it into a collection of all three Mafia stories.
Buying a disc without checking region and hardware
