Short answer: Mafia III: Definitive Edition has native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions released on October 8, 2026. The new versions advertise 60-FPS gameplay, higher resolution, shorter loading times and bug fixes. PS5 adds DualSense vibration, adaptive trigger effects and a PS5 Pro Enhanced label; the Xbox listing specifies HDR10 and 60 fps+ capabilities. Your PS4 or Xbox One saves and achievements do not transfer to the corresponding current-generation edition, and the available store listings do not establish a universal free-upgrade entitlement for every older purchase.
What changed in the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions?
The 2026 release is a separate, native current-generation version rather than simply a backward-compatibility label. The PlayStation Store lists a PS5 edition, while the Xbox Store lists an Xbox Series X|S-optimized edition. Both listings give October 8, 2026 as the release date.

2K describes the new editions as delivering 60-FPS gameplay, increased resolution, reduced loading times and bug fixes. Those are official feature claims, not independent measurements. No official source reviewed for this release specifies a pixel-count target, a frame-time test, or a guaranteed locked frame rate for each console model.

The table separates what is explicitly listed from what remains unmeasured. In particular, “higher resolution” does not tell you whether a console renders at 1440p, 4K, dynamic resolution or another target, and “60 FPS” does not prove that every scene holds 60 frames per second.

Performance, resolution and loading
60-FPS claim
2K advertises 60-FPS gameplay for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions. The Xbox storefront additionally marks the game with a 60 fps+ capability label. These statements establish the intended performance mode, but they are not a console-by-console benchmark. There is no published frame-time graph or independent stability test in the official material available for this release.
Players should therefore read “60 FPS” as the advertised target. Your actual result can vary by scene, display mode, patch and console model. Series X and Series S are both covered by the Xbox listing, but the listing does not provide separate resolution or performance targets for the two machines.
Resolution improvements
2K says the current-generation editions increase resolution over the older releases. The publisher does not state a numeric output resolution, whether the game uses dynamic scaling, or whether PS5 Pro uses a different internal target. Do not treat the upgrade as a documented native-4K presentation unless a later technical specification says so.

Shorter loading and bug fixes
The newer editions are also described as having reduced loading times and bug fixes. No official duration, loading benchmark or complete bug list is supplied. The practical benefit should be most noticeable when entering the open world, restarting missions or moving between major areas, but the exact time saved depends on the console, installed storage and software version.
PS5-specific features
DualSense feedback
The PlayStation Store listing confirms support for DualSense vibration and trigger effects. That means the PS5 version can use the controller’s more advanced haptic and adaptive-trigger hardware rather than treating it exactly like a standard gamepad. The listing does not describe which actions use resistance or how extensively feedback is implemented, so the feature should not be interpreted as a complete redesign of the control system.
PS5 Pro Enhanced
The same listing labels the game PS5 Pro Enhanced. This confirms that Sony’s storefront recognizes a Pro-enhanced version, but it does not state the Pro’s resolution, frame-rate mode or image-quality settings. The available information cannot establish whether Pro owners receive a higher internal resolution, more consistent performance, improved effects, or a choice among modes.
Rank #3
Xbox Series X|S-specific information
HDR10 and display output
The Xbox Store identifies HDR10 support. HDR10-compatible televisions and monitors can use the format when the console, display settings and game output are configured for HDR. The storefront label confirms compatibility; it does not specify peak brightness, a calibrated HDR curve or whether every scene was mastered to the same standard.

Microsoft’s listing covers both Xbox Series X and Series S as one optimized release. It does not publish separate resolution targets, texture settings, loading measurements or frame-rate results for either model. Series S owners should not assume that it renders at the same resolution as Series X simply because both are included in the same listing.
Save files and achievements: what returning players need to know
No cross-generation save transfer
2K states that existing PS4 saves and achievements cannot be transferred to the PS5 edition, and Xbox One saves and achievements cannot be transferred to the Xbox Series X|S edition. This is the most important practical difference for anyone who has already completed missions or unlocked collectibles.

- Command up to five desperados and use their lethal skills to stealthily thin out the enemy rows
- Approach each mission with a variety of different solutions and paths
- Resolve seemingly impossible large enemy setups with careful planning and perfectly timed execution of the team's special skills
- Witness the glory of classic Wild West scenarios like frontier towns, desert canyons, Mississippi swamps, sprawling modern cities and many more by day and night
- Defeat your foes choosing between deadly and non-lethal options, stealth and blazing guns and further adjust the game to your playstyle
Starting the native version therefore means beginning with a new progression file. Cloud synchronization does not change the rule: a cloud backup of an older-generation save is still an older-edition save, not a transferable current-generation profile.
What to do before switching
- Keep the PS4 or Xbox One installation and its save data if you still want to continue that playthrough.
- Record any mission, collectible or achievement goals you planned to finish before moving to the new edition.
- Install the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version as a separate game entry and confirm that it creates its own save slot.
- Do not delete the old save while troubleshooting; deleting it cannot make an unsupported transfer work.
What the Definitive Edition includes
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S package includes the main game and its story expansions: Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned and Sign of the Times. It also includes the Family Kick-Back Pack and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack.

Check the product page attached to your account before downloading if you own an older bundle, because the contents of a previous purchase may not match the complete Definitive Edition package. The current-generation listing describes what is included in that edition; it does not by itself convert every historical purchase into the same entitlement.

Do older PS4 or Xbox One owners get a free upgrade?
What is confirmed
The official storefront listings confirm that native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions exist. They do not, on their own, establish a single upgrade policy covering every previous digital purchase, disc, region, purchase date or bundle.
How to verify your entitlement
- Open the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store while signed in to the account that bought the older game.
- Search specifically for Mafia III: Definitive Edition, not Mafia: Definitive Edition. The latter is the remake of the first game and has different support information.
- Open the edition details and read the price, ownership and upgrade language shown for your account and region.
- If you use a physical PS4 or Xbox One disc, confirm whether the current console edition requires the disc to remain in the drive. The available listings do not establish a universal disc rule.
- If the store page is unclear, ask platform support or 2K support to confirm the entitlement for your exact purchase before buying again.
Do not apply upgrade terms published for the first game’s Mafia: Definitive Edition to Mafia III: Definitive Edition. They are different products.
Which version should you play?
Choose the native PS5 edition if
- You want the advertised 60-FPS target, shorter loading and higher-resolution presentation on PlayStation hardware.
- You use a DualSense controller and value its vibration and trigger effects.
- You have a PS5 Pro and want the edition marked PS5 Pro Enhanced, while accepting that the exact Pro settings are not published.
- You are willing to start a new progression file because PS4 saves and achievements will not transfer.
Choose the native Xbox Series X|S edition if
- You want the current-generation Xbox build with the advertised 60-FPS gameplay and reduced loading.
- You use an HDR10 display and want the storefront-listed HDR support.
- You are moving from Xbox One and accept that the old save and achievement record cannot be carried into the Series edition.
- You understand that the listing does not specify separate Series X and Series S resolution targets.
Stay with the PS4 or Xbox One version if
- Your priority is finishing an existing campaign without losing progression.
- You do not have a current-generation console or a display that benefits from the newer output features.
- Your store account does not show a confirmed upgrade entitlement and you do not want to purchase a separate edition.
What is still unknown
Several details readers often expect from a technical comparison are not supplied by the official listings:
- Numeric resolution targets for PS5, PS5 Pro, Series X and Series S.
- Whether resolution is fixed or dynamically scaled.
- Measured frame-rate stability, frame-time behavior and performance in demanding scenes.
- Exact loading times before and after the upgrade.
- A complete list of bug fixes and visual changes.
- Universal upgrade rules for digital purchases, discs, bundles, regions and purchase dates.
Those omissions matter when comparing consoles. The confirmed information supports a broad conclusion—native builds aim for better performance, image quality, loading and compatibility features—but it does not support claims such as “native 4K,” “locked 60 FPS” or “free for every previous owner.”
Bottom line for PS4 and Xbox One players
Mafia III: Definitive Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is a current-generation release with an advertised 60-FPS mode, higher resolution, shorter loading and bug fixes, plus platform-specific features such as DualSense support on PS5 and HDR10 on Xbox. It includes the game’s major story DLC and listed weapon and vehicle packs. The trade-off is important: progression and achievements from the corresponding older-console versions do not transfer, and your store account must be checked for edition-specific upgrade eligibility.
