The 2016 open-world game is Mafia III. Its PS5 version, Mafia III: Definitive Edition, launched on October 8, 2026, and 2K offers a free digital upgrade to owners of qualifying editions—not to every PS5 user. Eligibility depends on the edition and, for physical copies, the purchase date, disc region, and PS5 hardware.
What is free—and what is not
2K describes the PS5 update as free for owners of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy, or Mafia: The Omerta Collection. The offer is an upgrade tied to qualifying ownership, not a general free game promotion for PS5 users and not a PlayStation Plus giveaway. Check 2K’s current upgrade instructions and the PlayStation Store listing for your account and region before relying on eligibility.

The PS5 edition became available October 8, 2026. 2K characterizes it as a current-generation version of the 2020 Definitive Edition, with 60 FPS support, faster loading, and fixes to legacy issues. A ComicBook.com report published October 9, 2026 describes additional reported fixes involving progression, NPC and companion behavior, checkpoints, vehicles, mission scripting, lighting, draw distance, and physics; treat those specifics as reporting rather than as a complete publisher-confirmed feature list.

According to 2K’s support instructions, eligible owners can include people with a physical or digital PS4 copy of Mafia III: Definitive Edition acquired before October 8, 2026, as well as owners of Mafia: Trilogy or Mafia: The Omerta Collection. The exact entitlement can depend on the account, edition, and region, so ownership of a title with a similar name alone does not guarantee the upgrade.
#1 Best Overall
Digital PS4 ownership
If you own an eligible digital edition, sign in to the PlayStation account that owns it and check the PS5 game or upgrade listing in the PlayStation Store. Confirm that the edition and account show the upgrade as available before starting a download. The publisher’s instructions, not a generic claim that the game is free, determine whether your copy qualifies.
Physical PS4 ownership
A qualifying PS4 disc can be used to obtain the digital PS5 edition, but the disc-based route has extra conditions: the PS5 must have a disc drive, the disc must remain inserted to claim and play the PS5 version, and the disc’s region must match the PlayStation region for the upgrade to be available. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use this physical-disc upgrade route.

- THE MAFIA HAVE INFILTRATED YOUR TOWN! You must find them and eliminate them. Each day you, the civilians, will hold a town hall meeting to vote for a suspected Mafia to eliminate. Get it right and you might survive. Get it wrong, and you're in danger because every night the Mafia secretly meet and choose a civilian to kill...
- BLUFF, DECEIVE & OUTSMART YOUR FRIENDS: Every player has a secret role and no one knows who to trust. Read your friends, defend yourself, form alliances, and use clever deception and deduction to lead your team to victory.
- 19 UNIQUE CHARACTERS: Go beyond classic Mafia and Civilians with exciting special roles including the Doctor, Detective, Vigilante, Godfather, Bus Driver, Cupid, Magician, Miller, Postman, Undercover Cop, Bartender, Lawyer, Made Man, Rival Mafia & more! Purchase date and collection editions
2K’s stated condition for a physical or digital PS4 copy of Mafia III: Definitive Edition is that it was acquired before October 8, 2026. The support page also names Mafia: Trilogy and Mafia: The Omerta Collection; check the listing and publisher guidance for the specific edition you own rather than assuming every bundle or purchase qualifies.
How to check and claim it
- Identify your copy. Check whether your ownership is digital or physical and whether it is Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy, or Mafia: The Omerta Collection.
- Check the purchase timing. For a standalone PS4 copy of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, verify it was acquired before October 8, 2026.
- Check disc requirements, if applicable. Use a disc-drive PS5, confirm the disc region matches your PlayStation region, and keep the disc available for claiming and playing the digital PS5 edition.
- Open the PS5 PlayStation Store listing. Sign in to the account that owns the game and check whether the eligible PS5 edition or upgrade is offered. Follow the Store’s on-screen instructions; if the entitlement is missing, consult 2K’s current support guidance before buying another copy.
Do you need PlayStation Plus or an internet connection?
2K’s FAQ says the original game can be played out of the box without PlayStation Plus or an online connection. That statement concerns the original game’s basic play requirements; it does not establish every requirement for claiming or downloading the PS5 upgrade. See the 2K FAQ and the upgrade instructions for the details relevant to your copy.
