Mafia III: Definitive Edition bundles the complete base game with three story expansions and two bonus content packs. Current store listings cover PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S; the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S listings advertise 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. You can play offline without PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core, but 2K recommends going online long enough to download updates and patches.
The most important progression detail is easy to miss: the story DLC becomes available only after Lincoln completes Sit Down and has all three lieutenants. Cross-generation save transfer and official fixes for stuck missions are not confirmed in the current support material, so those questions require a platform-specific check with 2K Support.
What Mafia III: Definitive Edition includes
Definitive Edition is a content bundle rather than a separate campaign that replaces the original game. It contains the full Mafia III base game, three story expansions, and two packs of additional items:

- Stones Unturned — a story expansion included with the edition.
- Sign of the Times — a story expansion included with the edition.
- Family Kick-Back Pack — bonus content, not an additional story chapter.
- Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack — bonus weapons, not a separate campaign.
2K lists this package in its Mafia Trilogy FAQ. The two packs add equipment and other extras; they should not be counted as a fourth or fifth story expansion.

Which platforms have current listings?
The current official storefronts identify separate listings by console generation. Use the listing for your own platform and region because store availability, ownership records, and upgrade treatment can vary by account.
| Platform listing | What the official listing says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 4 | Included in the PS4/PS5 product listing. | Confirm that the edition is attached to your PlayStation account and that the store page matches your region. |
| PlayStation 5 | The listing describes 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements for PS5. | Use the PS5 version shown in your account; the store description is a feature claim, not an independently measured frame-rate test. |
| Xbox One | Included in the Xbox One/Series X|S product listing. | Check the edition and ownership status in the Microsoft account you will use to play. |
| Xbox Series X|S | The Series X|S description advertises 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. | Verify the Series listing and your region before downloading. |
| PC | The 2K ownership FAQ documents Steam ownership handling, but the material available here does not establish a complete current list of PC storefronts. | Check the storefront account where you own the game rather than assuming every PC store carries the same entitlement. |
The PlayStation product page is Mafia III Definitive Edition for PS5 and PS4. The Xbox listing is Mafia III Definitive Edition for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Those pages describe the currently listed console generations; they do not, by themselves, promise a free upgrade for every previous purchase or every region.
How to start the included DLC missions
The expansions are included, but their missions do not appear at the beginning of a new campaign. 2K gives a specific story gate:

- Play the main campaign until Lincoln completes the Sit Down mission.
- Make sure all three lieutenants are by Lincoln’s side.
- Open the in-game map and travel to the indicated DLC location.
That guidance comes from the official 2K Trilogy FAQ, which says DLC missions can be started at the indicated map location after those requirements are met. If a DLC marker is absent before this point, that is consistent with the stated progression gate rather than evidence that the expansion is missing.
Why lieutenant status matters
The three-lieutenant requirement is not merely a menu unlock. 2K explains in its Mafia III FAQ that weapon and vehicle attribute upgrades become available as lieutenant loyalty increases. Your stealth choices also affect mission gameplay, while balancing lieutenant loyalty changes the narrative experience. The FAQ does not specify a guaranteed ending or a single mandatory order for every mission, so do not infer one from the DLC unlock rule.
Can you play without PS Plus, Game Pass Core, or an internet connection?
Yes. 2K’s FAQ states that you do not need PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass Core, or online connectivity to play the game “straight out of the box.” This applies to playing the installed game offline; it does not mean that downloading the game, installing patches, or receiving later updates can happen without an internet connection.

2K recommends connecting the console to the internet to download updates and patches. If you are preparing for offline play, update the game first, launch it once while connected, and then test the installed campaign before relying on an internet-free setup. The official wording and its update qualification are in the 2K Mafia III FAQ.

What existing owners receive
2K’s Trilogy FAQ says existing owners on Xbox One, PS4, and Steam receive the Definitive Edition entitlement. For Xbox One and PS4, its instructions direct players to obtain the DLC and bonus-pack bundle from the relevant console store at no additional charge. For Steam users, the FAQ says the additions are applied automatically.
These instructions describe the ownership situation covered by that FAQ. They are not a universal guarantee for every later console listing, account combination, disc region, or purchase made after the FAQ was published. If the bundle does not appear, sign in with the account that owns the base game, open the platform’s own library or store page, and compare the displayed edition with the product you purchased. The FAQ does not establish that every previous owner automatically receives a separate native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S purchase.

Does a PS4 save transfer to PS5, or an Xbox One save to Series X|S?
The current official pages reviewed here do not confirm cross-generation save migration. They list PS4 alongside PS5 and Xbox One alongside Xbox Series X|S, but a shared product listing is not proof that a PS4 save will be recognized by the PS5 version or that an Xbox One save will transfer to the Series version.
Do not delete an old save, overwrite cloud storage, or assume that reinstalling the newer listing will import progress. Check the save-transfer policy for your exact platform account and contact 2K Support if the store or console does not explain the process. Until an official platform-specific instruction confirms migration, treat the policy as unresolved.
What to do when a mission will not progress
The reviewed 2K FAQ does not provide checkpoint-specific recovery instructions for a campaign objective that fails to advance, a checkpoint reload loop, a DLC trigger that does not appear after the prerequisites, or a save that will not load. Because no official procedure is established for those symptoms, a community workaround should not be presented as a guaranteed or 2K-approved fix.

Prepare the details Support will need
- Identify the platform and generation: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S.
- Record the mission name, objective text, and the exact point at which progression stops.
- Describe whether the game freezes, returns to a checkpoint, fails to show a map marker, or refuses to load the save.
- Note whether the game and console have installed the latest available updates.
- Keep the affected save intact; do not delete files or edit save data while seeking help.
Then consult the current 2K Mafia III support information and submit the case through the support route it provides. Include the requested platform, account, and symptom information so Support can distinguish an entitlement issue from a campaign progression problem.
How the platform versions compare
| Comparison point | What is established | What remains unconfirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Generations | PS4/PS5 and Xbox One/Series X|S have current official listings. | Nothing in the cited listings guarantees identical behavior across generations. |
| Current-generation presentation | PS5 and Xbox Series X|S store descriptions advertise 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. | The descriptions are not independent consistency tests and do not state that every scene sustains a measured 60 FPS. |
| Edition contents | Base game, three story expansions, Family Kick-Back Pack, and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack. | The console listings do not establish a different set of story chapters for each generation. |
| Offline access | 2K says no console subscription or online connection is required to play straight out of the box. | Updates and patches still require downloading, and online services may be needed for store transactions. |
| Existing-owner treatment | 2K documents Xbox One, PS4, and Steam entitlements in its Trilogy FAQ. | That FAQ does not establish an automatic native-generation purchase or upgrade for every account. |
| Save migration | No cross-generation transfer policy is confirmed in the cited material. | Check with the platform holder and 2K Support before replacing an old installation or save. |
Practical checklist before you begin
- Confirm that your store account owns Mafia III: Definitive Edition, not only a different edition or a purchase on another account.
- Install available updates while connected to the internet.
- Keep the original console and its saves available if you plan to move from PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Series X|S.
- Complete Sit Down and recruit all three lieutenants before looking for DLC map markers.
- Use the platform-specific store page for your region when checking a download or entitlement.
- For a blocked mission, preserve the save and provide Support with the platform, mission, objective, and symptom instead of applying an unverified save edit.
Bottom line
Definitive Edition is the complete Mafia III package: the base game, three story expansions, and two bonus packs. It is currently listed for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with the current-generation descriptions advertising 60 FPS and technical improvements. Offline play does not require PS Plus or Game Pass Core. DLC starts only after Sit Down and all three lieutenants are in place. Save transfer and official stuck-mission recovery steps remain unconfirmed, so protect existing saves and verify those cases with 2K Support.
