Down-and-distance: what must happen next?
Down-and-distance describes how many plays the offense has left to gain the yards needed for a new set of downs. It gives a play its immediate context. A short gain can be useful in one situation and costly in another, depending on how many yards remain and how many attempts are left.

Try predicting the broad purpose of a play before choosing it, then see whether the result matches your expectation. A single successful or unsuccessful outcome is not enough to judge the idea behind a call. In real football, execution, communication, opponent decisions and other circumstances affect what happens. A video game necessarily represents those things through its own rules, controls, artificial intelligence and design.
