When a Macrium Reflect backup fails, start with the failed operation’s log: record the exact error code and the last step that completed. That tells you whether to investigate a Windows VSS snapshot, a disk read, the backup destination, or image verification—problems that need different fixes.
Start with the failed backup log
Reflect creates a log for each action, and its detailed entries show the operation’s progress, including progress by partition. Open the log for the failed backup and note the exact error text or code, the partition involved, and the last operation reported as successful. If the backup used VSS, inspect the VSS details as well. See Macrium’s Reflect log guide.
- Record whether the error occurred while creating a snapshot, reading the source, writing to the destination, or verifying the image.
- Keep the complete log rather than relying on a screenshot of the final error.
- If the same backup fails again, compare the new log with the first one; note whether the failure occurs at the same stage.
Reflect’s menus and capabilities differ by edition and version. Use the instructions for your installed release; the current support pages cited below cover Reflect X or Reflect LTSC where specified.

If Reflect reports a VSS or snapshot error
Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) lets Windows create snapshots so Reflect can back up files or volumes that are in use. A snapshot-creation failure is not the same as an unreadable source disk. Check Reflect’s backup and VSS logs, then review the relevant Windows VSS events for the component or writer that failed. Macrium’s VSS troubleshooting guide describes this diagnostic path and the version-dependent Other Tasks > Fix VSS Problems utility, if it appears in your Reflect version. The Windows VSS Events guide explains Reflect’s filtered event view for LTSC.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Use the event and log details to identify the failing writer or service before changing system configuration. Macrium notes that VSS failures can affect other programs that depend on VSS too, so a problem that appears during Reflect may have a wider Windows cause.
When the code is 0x8004231f
This code means VSS_E_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE. Macrium lists inadequate shadow-storage space, older snapshots consuming space, and incorrectly assigned drive letters to system partitions as possible causes. Check the VSS log and identify the affected volume and likely cause before changing shadow storage or removing snapshots; deleting restore points indiscriminately can remove recovery points without addressing the actual problem. See Macrium’s error-specific guidance.

When an image is urgently needed
If the computer can be taken offline for the backup, Macrium says its rescue media can create a backup without VSS. This is an alternative route to making an image, not evidence that VSS in Windows has been fixed. Confirm that your rescue media supports your Reflect setup before relying on it; Macrium’s VSS article describes the offline option.
If the log shows error 1117 or an unreadable disk
Error 1117 and “unable to read from disk” point to a read/I/O failure, not a VSS snapshot problem. Use the log to identify the disk or partition and the operation underway when reading failed. Macrium’s troubleshooting index treats error 1117 and unreadable-disk errors as separate paths from VSS and verification errors; follow the procedure matching your exact message rather than applying a generic disk-repair command. The index is for Reflect v7.2 and was last modified on February 18, 2020, so check that its instructions match your version: Macrium’s troubleshooting index.

Preserve important data and avoid repeatedly retrying an image to suspect media. If the version-specific procedure does not resolve the error, provide Macrium support with the full Reflect log and relevant Windows events.
If image verification fails
Verification compares data read back from the image with the data written to it. A mismatch means the image should be treated as suspect until you have a valid backup. Macrium’s legacy v5 help says verification failures are rare and generally associated with hardware or media problems; it identifies the backup media as the likeliest source, while memory or motherboard faults are also possible. That diagnosis is a useful principle, but the article is for an older Reflect version: Troubleshooting Verification Problems.

Use the log to establish where verification failed, then investigate the destination media and hardware rather than assuming the source disk or VSS is responsible. If a retry is appropriate, compare results using a different destination. A successful run to another destination can help narrow the cause, but does not by itself prove the original hardware or media is healthy.

Keep the complete log and exact code, then search Macrium’s current troubleshooting documentation for that specific error. The v7.2 troubleshooting index distinguishes several common categories, but its instructions may not apply to current editions. If the code remains unresolved, contact Macrium support with the log and relevant Windows events so the failure can be assessed in context.
