macOS includes real antivirus protection, but it does not do every job a third-party security suite might. Gatekeeper and notarization help stop risky apps before they launch; XProtect detects known malware and can help remove it. Third-party tools may add behavioral detection, phishing and web protection, Windows-malware scanning, or centralized monitoring—but those features vary by product. Whether you need one depends on what you install, what you handle, and whether you need management features.
What macOS protects against—and how its layers work
Apple describes several protections that act at different stages, from checking an app before it opens to detecting known malware and limiting what software can do after launch. They are complementary, not interchangeable.
Gatekeeper checks software when you first open it
When you first open downloaded software, Gatekeeper checks whether it comes from an identified developer, has been notarized by Apple, and has not been altered. It may require your approval before allowing the software to run. Gatekeeper also tracks where files came from and can help protect against malicious plug-ins bundled alongside a legitimate app. Users and administrators can change some policies, subject to management controls. Apple’s app security overview explains these checks.

Apple scans apps distributed outside the App Store for known malware. If an app passes, Apple issues a ticket that Gatekeeper can verify. Apple can also issue revocation tickets for apps later identified as malicious; revocation checks happen more frequently than background XProtect signature updates. Notarization is a screening step, not a guarantee that an app is harmless. Apple’s malware-protection documentation describes the relationship between notarization, Gatekeeper, and XProtect.

- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
XProtect is built-in antivirus for known malware
Apple calls XProtect its built-in antivirus technology. It uses YARA signatures to check for known malicious content automatically when an app first launches, changes on disk, or XProtect signatures update. When it detects known malware, XProtect can block it, alert the user, and perform remediation. Its signatures update separately from full macOS system updates; checks for XProtect updates are enabled daily by default. This makes XProtect meaningful baseline protection, but signature-based detection does not establish that every new or unknown threat will be caught.
Runtime protections limit what software can do
macOS protects system files, resources, and the kernel from the app space, and App Store apps are sandboxed. These controls can limit the damage if malicious software runs; they do not replace detecting or removing malware.
Apple summarizes the roles this way: the App Store or Gatekeeper combined with notarization can prevent malware from launching; Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect block malware from running; and XProtect can remediate malware that has executed. The summary appears in Apple Support’s “Protecting against malware in macOS,” published December 19, 2024.

What a third-party Mac security tool may catch
Third-party products differ, so do not assume a feature is included simply because a tool is called antivirus. Depending on the product, it may add:
- Behavioral or heuristic detection: Techniques that may identify some zero-day or fileless attacks based on suspicious behavior rather than a known signature. AV-Comparatives identifies these as potential additions to signature-based scanning; effectiveness varies by product and test conditions. Its 2025 Mac security report discusses these capabilities.
- Web and phishing protection: Blocking access to malicious sites or warning about deceptive pages. Check whether the product covers the browsers and activities you use, and whether this is a tested feature.
- Windows-malware detection: Finding Windows threats on a Mac can help prevent the Mac from carrying them to Windows systems via shared files. Such detection does not mean the Windows malware can necessarily infect macOS.
- Potentially unwanted application (PUA) detection: Identifying software that may be unwanted even when it is not classified as malware. Coverage and definitions differ.
- Central monitoring and response: In managed environments, endpoint tools may collect security events and give administrators a central view for logging and incident response.
On macOS 15 or later, Apple’s Endpoint Security API can provide third-party security developers with Gatekeeper-bypass events and XProtect detection details. That enables products to build visibility and response workflows, but it does not mean every consumer antivirus app exposes or acts on those events. Apple’s documentation covers this API capability.
How to decide whether the built-in protections are enough for you
There is no evidence here that every Mac user must buy antivirus, or that the built-in protections guarantee safety. Match the decision to your exposure and the features you would actually use.

A home user who mostly uses trusted apps
If you install software selectively, keep macOS and apps updated, review permission prompts, and mainly want protection against known malware, Apple’s built-in layers provide a meaningful baseline. Be cautious with unexpected downloads and prompts; a scanner cannot make an unsafe download trustworthy.
A user who installs unfamiliar software or handles shared files
If you regularly try software from unfamiliar sources, a tool with credible behavioral detection may add a layer beyond known signatures. If you exchange files with Windows users, Windows-malware scanning may help reduce the chance of passing along a threat. If phishing is your main concern, assess the product’s web protection rather than assuming its malware scanner covers it.
A parent or household setting up a less experienced user’s Mac
Consider whether web protection, clear alerts, and easy-to-understand controls would help that person avoid risky links and downloads. Evaluate the actual feature set and usability instead of relying on the antivirus label.

An organization that needs oversight
For administrators, central alerts, event logging, and incident-response workflows may matter more than adding another local scan. Confirm that a product supports the Apple Endpoint Security API events your team needs and that its management features suit your environment.

Lab results show how particular products performed under defined conditions. They are snapshots, not guarantees about future threats or proof that a product is best for every Mac user. Before relying on a score, check:
- Which macOS generation and patch level the lab tested, and how closely that matches your Mac.
- When the test ran, how many samples it used, and whether those samples included PUAs or Windows malware.
- Whether products had cloud access and current definitions, and which settings were enabled.
- Whether the lab measured false positives, real-time protection, phishing or web blocking, performance, usability, and remediation—or only sample detection.
- Which product versions were tested and whether they are available to consumers.
AV-Comparatives: a May 2025 sample test
AV-Comparatives tested products on macOS Sequoia in May 2025 with cloud connectivity and updates allowed. Its report included 899 Mac malware samples, 750 Mac PUA samples, and 500 Windows malware samples. It reported no false alarms in its clean-software false-alarm test. Those sample counts and that false-alarm result describe that test and setup; they do not predict performance against every threat or future samples. See the AV-Comparatives 2025 Mac Security Test for its scope and results.

AV-TEST: a separate March 2025 evaluation
AV-TEST evaluated 11 home-user security products on macOS Sequoia in March 2025. It awarded up to six points each for protection, performance, and usability, with malware detection, false positives, and performance among its focus areas. Its scoring system and test are separate from AV-Comparatives’, so the results should not be combined into a single league table without accounting for their different methods. See AV-TEST’s March 2025 macOS evaluation.
Good security habits still matter
Antivirus is one layer, not a substitute for safe downloads, software updates, careful permission review, and strong account security. AV-Comparatives recommends these practices alongside antivirus. Regular backups using Time Machine or another backup solution help you recover data; they do not detect malware. Apple recommends regular backups in its malware-protection guidance.
