For many everyday tasks, machine translation now feels close to effortless. But translation as a whole has not been solved: quality still depends on the language direction, subject matter, input type, available context, and the cost of getting a sentence wrong.
Why it can feel as if translation is solved
When a system handles a familiar language pair and a routine task, its output can be so fluent and useful that the old problems seem to have disappeared. That impression is backed by real progress, not just polished demos. In the Workshop on Machine Translation’s 2024 General Machine Translation Shared Task, systems produced what the paper describes as near-perfect translations in the English-to-Spanish domains it tested.
That result is important—but it describes a bounded set of tests, not every language, setting, or sentence. WMT24 covered 11 language pairs, with three to five domains per pair. A strong result in one direction and domain does not establish equally strong performance in the reverse direction, in a different genre, or in a language pair that was not tested.
What benchmark results do—and do not—tell you
A score belongs to its test conditions
A translation result is meaningful only alongside the conditions that produced it: the language pair and direction, the domain, the input modality, and how much context the system received. Sentence-level translation of routine text is not the same task as translating a long document, speech, or text embedded in an image. Nor does success on high-resource languages establish the same quality for low-resource ones.

- RECHARGABLE BATTERY: With its built-in rechargeable battery, you can use this word translator on-the-go without worrying about power.
WMT25’s General Machine Translation task reflects that wider problem space. Its evaluation includes document context, speech, social-media images, literary material with long context, and low-resource languages. Those settings are not evidence that systems fail at all such tasks; they show why a result from a narrower benchmark cannot stand in for translation capability overall.
Coverage is not equal quality
In a 2024 Nature paper, the FLORES-200 benchmark is described as enabling evaluation across approximately 40,000 translation directions covered by the NLLB-200 models. That is broad benchmark coverage, not a finding that every direction has equally good output.

The same paper describes a final human quality check under which a language dataset was considered ready if it passed a 90-out-of-100 threshold: raters agreed with 90% of the reference translations for that direction. This is a quality-assurance criterion for the benchmark data, not a translation-system score. It should not be read as saying a model translates with 90% accuracy.

Why it is hard to declare a winner
Human judgments matter, but are not perfectly consistent
WMT24 drew on 108 human or semi-professional annotators, who contributed more than 57,000 judgments. Even at that scale, the paper reports that annotations can be noisy and evaluators may use different strategies when ranking translations. The system that ranked best by automatic metrics did not win across the board in human evaluation; the authors point to likely metric bias as one explanation. Their conclusion is that “human evaluation should be used as the final judge of translation quality.” That makes human review essential, not infallible.

The Nature paper also describes inter-evaluator agreement in large-scale human evaluation as being around 0.5 kappa, illustrating that people do not always make the same judgments. A separate Google Research study found that machine-translation rankings changed under different human-evaluation methods and noted the lack of a commonly accepted standard procedure at the time of that study.
Automatic metrics are useful signals, not universal truth
Automatic metrics make it possible to compare many outputs consistently and at scale, but they can miss meaningful errors or favor qualities that do not match what a reader needs. NIST’s 2024 Metrics for Machine Translation Evaluation report lists selected correlations between metric scores and human semantic-adequacy assessments ranging from rho = 0.69 to 0.93. Those figures vary by metric and evaluation level; they are not one general accuracy score, and correlation does not mean a metric can certify an individual translation as correct.

How to judge whether machine translation is enough
Before treating a system’s output as reliable, ask what task it is being asked to do and what happens if it gets something wrong. A useful comparison should specify:
- Language pair and direction: for example, English to Spanish is a distinct evaluation from Spanish to English.
- Resource level: results for widely represented languages do not automatically generalize to low-resource languages.
- Domain: everyday conversation, technical instructions, legal material, and literature impose different demands.
- Context: a sentence, a paragraph, and a document can require different choices for meaning, terminology, and consistency.
- Input type: typed text, speech, and text in images are different translation tasks.
- Error tolerance: an acceptable rough reading is not the same as a translation that must preserve a consequential detail.
For low-risk use—such as getting the gist of a message or translating routine content—machine translation may be sufficient. For consequential material, such as instructions or documents where a subtle error could cause harm or change someone’s rights, have a suitably qualified person review it. This is practical guidance drawn from the limits of evaluation, not a claim that any particular benchmark tested those consequences.
So, has machine translation been solved?
Some machine-translation tasks now work remarkably well, including the tested English-to-Spanish domains highlighted by WMT24. But a bounded success is not proof that translation is solved across languages, subject areas, modalities, and stakes. The more precise answer is that machine translation has become highly capable in some settings while remaining uneven and difficult to evaluate in others.
