If you want to change a Mac’s internal RAM or storage after buying it, the strongest documented fit is a used 2012 MacBook Pro—not a current MacBook Air. Apple identifies the 13-inch MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) as having removable memory, and iFixit documents a RAM upgrade to 16 GB for the 15-inch Unibody Mid 2012 model. Current MacBook Air models let you choose memory and SSD capacity at purchase, but iFixit says those components are not upgradeable afterward.

Which Mac laptops support internal upgrades?

For internal changes, distinguish between replacing a component after purchase and selecting its capacity when ordering. The evidence supports legacy MacBook Pros for RAM access and certain older MacBook Airs for SSD replacement. It does not support treating a current MacBook Air as upgradeable just because its configuration can be customized or its ports can be serviced.

Model Internal RAM Internal SSD Best fit
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) Apple lists removable memory. Not established by the cited Apple memory page; check the exact model separately. RAM access, subject to exact-model and part verification.
MacBook Pro 15-inch Unibody (Mid 2012) iFixit documents user installation up to 16 GB. The cited teardown supports describing the model as relatively upgradeable, but does not establish a specific SSD capacity or compatible part. A legacy machine for hands-on RAM modification.
Compatible MacBook Air models released 2010–2017 Do not assume RAM is upgradeable. iFixit documents SSD replacement for supported models in this range. Storage replacement rather than a general upgrade platform.
MacBook Air with M5 (2026) Configurable at purchase; iFixit says it is not upgradeable afterward. Apple says the line starts at 512 GB and can be configured up to 4 TB; iFixit says storage is not upgradeable afterward. A modern Mac for buyers prepared to choose capacity up front.

MacBook Pro: the clearest choice for a RAM upgrade

13-inch MacBook Pro (Mid 2012)

Apple’s removable-memory list includes the 13-inch MacBook Pro (Mid 2012). Apple also says that laptop models absent from its list have non-removable memory. 15-inch Unibody MacBook Pro (Mid 2012)

iFixit’s teardown says Apple configured this model with up to 8 GB, while users could install up to 16 GB. That is a specific historical upgrade claim for the 15-inch Unibody model, not proof that every MacBook Pro from 2012 has the same memory layout or compatibility. MacBook Air: older models may allow SSD replacement

iFixit’s SSD replacement guide covers compatible MacBook Air models released from 2010 through 2017. It cautions that newer machines likely have soldered storage. This makes a supported older Air a storage-focused alternative, not evidence that its RAM can also be upgraded. Confirm the exact model and SSD compatibility in iFixit’s MacBook Air SSD replacement guide before sourcing a part.

Current MacBook Air: choose capacity before checkout

Apple announced the MacBook Air with M5 on March 3, 2026, in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. Apple says the line starts with 512 GB of storage and can be configured up to 4 TB. Its MacBook Air specifications list configurable memory and storage tiers; choose enough for your needs when ordering rather than planning to add RAM or an SSD later. iFixit describes memory and storage in the 2026 Air as non-serviceable and non-upgradeable: MacBook Air 15-inch 2026 repair information.

Serviceability is not the same as upgradeability. iFixit describes the current Air’s MagSafe, Thunderbolt and headphone ports as modular, but that does not mean its RAM or storage can be changed. Apple provides a repair manual for the 13-inch M4 MacBook Air (2025), which likewise is not evidence of user-upgradeable memory or storage: Apple’s MacBook Air M4 manuals and downloads.

What to verify before buying a used upgradeable Mac

  • Exact model: Check the model identifier, not just the screen size or the seller’s year description. Apple’s memory list and iFixit’s SSD guide apply to particular models.
  • Part compatibility: Verify the RAM or SSD against that exact identifier before purchase. Do not treat a generic kit as compatible with every MacBook of the same age.
  • Condition and battery health: Inspect the computer and battery before committing; an upgrade path does not establish the condition of a particular used machine.
  • Installed operating system: Confirm what system is installed and independently check whether it meets your software needs. The cited upgrade guides do not establish present-day software-support life or compatibility.
  • Upgrade scope: Separate a RAM upgrade, SSD replacement, battery repair, and external storage. Evidence for one does not prove the others are possible.

Bottom line by upgrade priority

  • RAM access: Start with the 13-inch MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) on Apple’s removable-memory list; the 15-inch Unibody Mid 2012 has a documented path up to 16 GB.
  • Internal SSD replacement: Consider only a compatible MacBook Air model from the 2010–2017 range covered by iFixit’s guide, after checking its precise model.
  • Modern MacBook Air: Choose memory and storage at purchase. Its configuration options do not make those components upgradeable afterward.
