There is no universal winner: the better laptop depends first on which operating system and applications your work requires, then on the exact model and configuration. MacBook Pro is the stronger fit to consider if you need macOS, its higher-end M5 Pro or M5 Max tiers, an XDR display, or built-in HDMI and SDXC. Surface Laptop is the better fit to consider if you need Windows, a touchscreen, or the taller 3:2 screen on certain models. Compare the specific devices you would buy—not the product names alone.
Start with operating system and required apps
Compatibility is the first decision point. If your employer’s tools, required applications, device-management setup, or peripherals depend on Windows, verify that your workflow is supported on the exact Mac configuration before choosing macOS. If you rely on software optimized for macOS, check its Windows support and whether features differ before choosing a Surface Laptop. There is no application-by-application compatibility comparison in the specifications cited here, so confirm with the software publisher or your IT team rather than assuming a particular program will work equally well on both.
Match the laptop to the work
CPU, graphics, and demanding workloads
Apple’s current MacBook Pro specifications span M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max. Apple positions Pro for demanding tasks such as code optimization and large image libraries, and Max for particularly demanding work such as engineering simulations. Those are Apple’s intended use cases, not proof that a particular Mac outperforms a particular Surface.
The current consumer Surface Laptop page identifies Snapdragon X2 Plus in its 13-inch model. Separately, Microsoft’s 2026 Surface Laptop for Business Intel fact sheet covers 13.8- and 15-inch configurations with Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors, including specified Ultra 5, Ultra 7, and Ultra X7 options. These are distinct consumer and business lineups; the business sheet does not describe every consumer Surface.

Processor names and tiers alone do not establish which laptop is faster. The manufacturer information cited here does not provide matched, independent tests of exact current MacBook Pro and Surface Laptop configurations. For creative, coding, engineering, or local AI work, compare the apps you use, the specific CPU and graphics configuration, memory, and storage. Apple’s March 3, 2026 announcement says M5 Pro and M5 Max are up to 30% faster than the previous generation, based on Apple testing conducted in January and February 2026; that is an Apple claim about its own generation comparison, not a cross-platform result. Display, touch, and screen shape
MacBook Pro’s 14.2-inch display specification lists Liquid Retina XDR, P3 wide color, adaptive refresh up to 120 Hz, up to 1,000 nits sustained full-screen brightness, and 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness. Apple lists the same peak HDR rating for the 16.2-inch model. These specifications are relevant if HDR brightness and wide-color support matter to your work, but they do not by themselves establish calibration or real-world panel behavior for a particular unit. Surface specifications depend on the model and lineup. Microsoft lists the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop for Business with a touch-capable 3:2 PixelSense Flow display at 2304 × 1536, up to 120 Hz, and up to 600 nits maximum typical SDR brightness. The 15-inch business display is listed at 3270 × 2180. The consumer 13-inch Surface Laptop has a different listed panel: 1920 × 1280 at 60 Hz. Touch can suit annotation and direct interaction; the 3:2 shape gives documents and spreadsheets a taller working area than a widescreen layout. Configuration matters as much as the product family. Microsoft’s 2026 Intel business fact sheet lists 16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB of memory and removable 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB SSD options. Those options apply to the configurations covered by that business sheet; do not assume they describe the consumer models. Check the memory and storage of the specific Mac or Surface SKU against your project sizes and workload. Microsoft’s business fact sheet.

Compare battery claims carefully
Manufacturer battery figures are test-specific maximum estimates, not a direct head-to-head result. Apple’s current specification for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 lists up to 24 hours of video streaming and up to 16 hours of wireless web. For the 14-inch M5 Pro, Apple lists up to 22 hours of video streaming and 14 hours of wireless web; for the 14-inch M5 Max, up to 20 hours and 13 hours, respectively. Microsoft lists up to 22.5 hours of video playback for the consumer 13-inch Surface Laptop and cautions that battery life varies with settings, usage, and other factors. The business Intel fact sheet describes preproduction testing on selected configurations, so its estimates should not be treated as results for every Surface model. The tests and devices differ; these advertised figures do not establish which laptop lasts longer in your day-to-day workload. Check ports and external displays before choosing
MacBook Pro includes MagSafe, HDMI, SDXC, a headphone jack, and Thunderbolt ports. The M5 model uses Thunderbolt 4; M5 Pro and M5 Max use Thunderbolt 5. Apple details external-display support by chip, so check the specifications for the exact configuration if you plan to connect multiple monitors or high-resolution displays. Surface port layouts and external-display limits vary by model; Microsoft lists USB-C and USB-A on some consumer configurations. Check the exact device against your monitor, card reader, and peripheral requirements. A hub or dock is worth considering only if the laptop’s ports do not meet those requirements, and the accessory must support the display setup you need.

Compare price by configuration, not starting price
Apple’s March 3, 2026 US announcement listed these starting prices: $1,699 for 14-inch M5, $2,199 for 14-inch M5 Pro, $2,699 for 16-inch M5 Pro, $3,599 for 14-inch M5 Max, and $3,899 for 16-inch M5 Max. These are launch prices reported by Apple, not a guarantee of current price or availability. Apple’s March 2026 announcement.
Microsoft’s consumer Surface Laptop page currently displays a $1,199.99 starting price and a $1,399.99 price for the 15-inch model card. These are US page prices, not necessarily a like-for-like comparison with Apple’s launch prices; discounts, taxes, and availability may change.
