For everyday work and general use, start with the MacBook Air. Consider a MacBook Pro if you need its Liquid Retina XDR display, want its additional connectivity, or will benefit from a higher-tier chip configuration. Which Apple laptop fits your needs depends on the specific chip, screen size, memory, storage, and ports—not just the Air or Pro name.
Apple’s current lineup lists 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models with M5, 14-inch MacBook Pro models with M5, and MacBook Pro configurations with M5 Pro and M5 Max. Apple’s Mac comparison is the place to confirm the specifications for the exact model you’re considering.
What’s the difference between MacBook Pro and MacBook Air?
The Air and Pro families differ in display, available chip tiers, connectivity, and screen sizes. A family name alone does not tell you how a particular configuration will perform: compare the exact chip and specifications against the apps and tasks you use.
| What to compare | MacBook Air | MacBook Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Current models listed by Apple | 13-inch and 15-inch models with M5 | 14-inch models with M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max configurations |
| Display | Liquid Retina | Liquid Retina XDR |
| Chip options | M5 | M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max, depending on configuration |
| Ports | Check the exact model’s port count and standards in Apple’s comparison | Check the exact model’s port count and standards in Apple’s comparison |
| Battery life | Apple publishes estimates by model and use case; actual results vary by use and configuration | Apple publishes estimates by model and use case; actual results vary by use and configuration |
These are distinctions between the currently listed families, not a claim that every Pro outperforms every Air for every task. Apple’s lineup and configurations can change, so verify the model details before buying.

When should you choose a MacBook Air?
Everyday work and general use
For general computing, start with the Air. Its current M5 models come in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, so you can choose between a smaller laptop footprint and a larger screen without moving to the Pro family.
Choosing between the 13-inch and 15-inch Air
Pick the screen size that suits how you work and carry your laptop. The 13-inch model favors a smaller footprint; the 15-inch model gives you a larger built-in display. Compare the precise configuration rather than assuming that screen size alone determines suitability.

When is a MacBook Pro worth considering?
You need the Liquid Retina XDR display
The Pro’s Liquid Retina XDR display is a concrete reason to consider that family. If display capability is central to your work, compare the exact model’s specifications with what your apps and tasks require.

Consider a Pro if its ports better match your peripherals or if your workload may benefit from an M5 Pro or M5 Max configuration. Apple lists those higher-tier chips in the Pro family; the chip name alone does not establish how much faster a configuration will be for a particular app. Check the exact ports and chip before deciding whether you need adapters, a hub, or a different configuration.

How to compare configurations before buying
- Identify your workload. List the software and tasks you rely on, then compare the exact chip in each candidate model. Do not treat the Air or Pro label as a performance specification.
- Choose the screen size and display. Compare the 13-inch and 15-inch Air options with the listed 14-inch Pro models, and decide whether the Pro’s Liquid Retina XDR display matters for your work.
- Check ports against your peripherals. Compare the exact model’s port count and standards with your monitors, storage, and other devices before planning on a hub or dock.
- Set memory and storage for your needs. Compare these alongside chip and screen size; do not assume starting configurations across the two families are equivalent.
- Review battery estimates with their limits. Apple provides model- and use-case-specific estimates, but actual battery life varies with use and configuration. Treat the figures as manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtime.
- Compare current, like-for-like prices. Match screen size, chip, memory, and storage, and check the price available to you. A like-for-like current price comparison is not established here.
What this comparison can—and can’t—tell you
Apple’s official comparison establishes the current listed model families and their specifications. It does not provide an independent benchmark comparison, and the available information does not establish regional pricing, long-term durability, or repair economics. Those factors require separate, current evidence; don’t infer them from the product-family names.
