For genuinely touch-first work, the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard is the better fit. It is the only choice here with direct screen touch, Apple Pencil Pro support, and a tablet form factor, while still providing a backlit keyboard and haptic trackpad for sustained typing. Choose the 14-inch MacBook Pro instead when macOS software, built-in ports, or support for two external displays matters more than touching the screen.
The short answer: choose the workflow, not the processor
Both products use Apple’s M5 generation, but they are designed around different interactions. The current iPad Pro runs iPadOS and can be used as a light tablet, a handwriting canvas, or a keyboard-equipped workstation. The current 14-inch MacBook Pro runs macOS and behaves like a conventional desktop computer that happens to be portable.
That distinction matters more than the chip name for touch-first work. The iPad Pro responds to fingers and supports Apple Pencil Pro. The MacBook Pro has no documented touch display; its touch interaction comes from the Force Touch trackpad and Multi-Touch gestures. A MacBook can handle pointer-based creative software very well, but it cannot replace the immediacy of writing directly on a screen.

What the current iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard provide
iPad Pro M5 hardware
The current iPad Pro is available in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes with an M5 chip. Both use Tandem OLED Ultra Retina XDR displays with ProMotion up to 120Hz. The platform supports Apple Pencil Pro, Wi-Fi 7, iPadOS, one Thunderbolt/USB 4 port, and one external display. Apple rates battery life at up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The 13-inch Wi-Fi model weighs 1.28 pounds (579 grams), measured for the tablet before adding a keyboard or other accessories. Apple also describes the 13-inch model as 5.1 mm thin. That low tablet weight is the main reason the iPad feels different from a notebook: you can hold it, lay it flat for marking up a document, or use it without a keyboard at all.
What the Magic Keyboard adds
The Magic Keyboard turns the iPad into a laptop-style setup without removing its tablet capabilities. Apple’s 11-inch M5 listing is $299; a 13-inch size option is available, but the supplied specifications do not state its price. Because the keyboard is an additional purchase, an iPad-and-keyboard comparison must include it rather than comparing the tablet’s price with the MacBook’s all-in-one price.
The keyboard has backlit scissor keys with 1 mm of travel, a 14-key function row, a large haptic trackpad, an adjustable floating cantilever hinge, USB-C pass-through charging, and front and back protection. Apple describes it as providing an “amazing typing and trackpad experience” in a portable design with an aluminum palm rest. It requires iPadOS 17.4 or later.
The result is a credible typing machine for essays, email, coding in a compatible app, and other sustained keyboard work. It is still a two-part system: remove the keyboard to get the lightest tablet experience, or attach it when you need a pointer and physical keys. The accessory adds cost and weight, although the supplied specifications do not state the keyboard’s weight.
Apple Pencil Pro and touch interaction
The iPad is the only option in this comparison with direct multi-touch on the display and Apple Pencil Pro support. That combination suits handwritten notes, sketching, document markup, diagrams, and interfaces that are easier to manipulate with a finger than a cursor. Pencil input also gives you a more natural way to make short annotations or corrections without opening a separate drawing application.

Touch is not merely a convenience when the work begins with a physical page, a canvas, or a whiteboard-like layout. You can move between pen, finger, and keyboard input without changing devices. Whether that flexibility is useful depends on your applications: iPadOS software must provide the editing, file handling, and export features your work requires.
What the 14-inch MacBook Pro does better
Ports and external displays
The 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro includes three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack. The iPad Pro has one Thunderbolt/USB 4 port. If your routine includes an SD card, wired display, audio hardware, storage drive, and charging at the same time, the MacBook requires fewer hubs and adapters.
Apple lists support for up to two external displays on the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro while retaining its built-in display. The iPad Pro supports one external display. That difference is significant for a desk-based workflow involving a reference monitor, a color display, or multiple application windows spread across screens.
Desktop software and multitasking
macOS is a desktop operating system with the broader conventional application model. It is the safer choice when your work depends on a Mac-only utility, a full desktop version of a professional application, specialized plug-ins, extensive file-management tools, or several desktop windows running side by side.
iPadOS uses a tablet-oriented app and window model. It can be highly effective when the applications you need are available in their iPad versions, but the same app name does not guarantee feature parity with a macOS release. Check the specific software, plug-ins, file formats, and peripheral support you use before treating the iPad as a complete replacement.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Built-in keyboard and pointer
The MacBook Pro includes a backlit Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and a Force Touch trackpad. There is no accessory to buy, charge, or pack separately. Touch ID can authenticate on the keyboard, while the trackpad supplies precise pointer control and Multi-Touch gestures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis arrangement is efficient for long sessions of text entry, spreadsheet work, code editing, and window management. It is also more stable on a desk than a floating tablet keyboard. The trade-off is that every interaction remains keyboard-and-pointer based; the display itself is not a drawing or touch surface.
Screen and weight
Apple lists the 14-inch MacBook Pro display as 14.2 inches with a 3024-by-1964 resolution, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and up to 1,600 nits of HDR peak brightness. The 14-inch M5 model weighs 3.4 pounds (1.55 kilograms). That is substantially heavier than the 13-inch iPad Pro tablet, even before considering the iPad keyboard.
The MacBook’s weight comes with a rigid, integrated computer: display, keyboard, trackpad, battery, ports, and cooling are always together. The iPad’s lighter tablet body is advantageous when held in one hand, but attaching the Magic Keyboard makes the complete setup less tablet-like and narrows the portability gap.
Touch-first work by use case
Drawing, handwriting, and annotation
Choose the iPad Pro. Apple Pencil Pro and direct touch are decisive advantages for sketches, handwritten notes, signatures, PDF markup, storyboards, and diagrams. The Magic Keyboard lets you type a caption, search a document, or send the finished work without moving to another computer.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
A MacBook Pro can support a drawing tablet or another input accessory, but that is an additional device and does not create touch interaction on the built-in screen. If your priority is making marks directly where you see them, the MacBook is the wrong form factor.
Writing and research
Either can work, but the better choice depends on how you gather information. The iPad is convenient if you switch between reading, highlighting, handwriting, and typing. The 13-inch tablet is easier to hold and carry, and the Pencil can annotate material without opening a separate notebook.
The MacBook is stronger when research means many conventional desktop windows, browser tabs, local files, and utilities arranged at once. Its integrated keyboard and larger port selection also make a fixed desk setup simpler.
Office, school, and communications
The iPad with Magic Keyboard is a sensible laptop substitute when your services have capable iPadOS applications and your work benefits from touch. It handles typed documents, messages, presentations, and web work while retaining tablet mode for reading and note-taking.
Do not assume that “laptop replacement” means identical behavior. Confirm that your organization’s authentication tools, file servers, browser extensions, document workflows, and conferencing features run on iPadOS. If a required tool is macOS-only, the MacBook is the practical choice regardless of the iPad’s lighter weight.

Photo, video, and creative production
The iPad favors touch-led editing and a portable review or sketching workflow. Apple Pencil Pro can be useful for masks, selections, retouching, and storyboarding when the application supports it.
The MacBook favors a complete desktop production environment, multiple displays, card-based import through SDXC, and direct connection to several peripherals. Its three Thunderbolt 4 ports and HDMI reduce the need for a dock in a studio or desk setup. The correct choice is determined by the exact applications and accessories, not by the M5 label alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the iPad Pro cheaper after adding the keyboard?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer from the available figures. Apple lists the 11-inch M5 Magic Keyboard at $299, and the iPad itself is sold in multiple sizes and configurations. The 13-inch keyboard option does not have a stated price in the supplied specifications, and regional pricing and availability can change.
Recommended Free Tools
For a fair calculation, add the exact iPad Pro configuration, the correct-size Magic Keyboard, and any Apple Pencil Pro you actually need. Compare that total with the specific 14-inch MacBook Pro configuration you are considering. The iPad may still be the better value for touch and tablet portability, but its accessory cost means the tablet’s standalone price is not the relevant comparison.
Portability, battery claims, and daily carrying
The 13-inch iPad Pro tablet weighs 1.28 pounds (579 grams), while the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro weighs 3.4 pounds (1.55 kilograms). Those figures are for the products as specified by Apple; the iPad figure excludes the Magic Keyboard. If you often read or write while standing, travel with a small bag, or use the device away from a desk, the tablet’s weight advantage is meaningful.
Apple rates the iPad Pro for up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback. That is a stated maximum under Apple’s test conditions, not a guarantee for every application or workload. The MacBook Pro specification page provides model-specific battery figures; check the exact M5 configuration rather than applying one number to every 14-inch model.
A practical decision checklist
- List your non-negotiable input methods. If direct touch or Apple Pencil Pro is required, select the iPad Pro. If a physical keyboard and pointer are sufficient, continue comparing.
- Check every essential application. Verify the iPadOS version supports your software, plug-ins, file formats, authentication method, and peripherals. Any macOS-only requirement points to the MacBook Pro.
- Count displays and connections. One external display and a single USB-C device fit the iPad’s specification. Two external displays, SDXC, HDMI, or several simultaneous accessories favor the MacBook.
- Price the complete setup. Include the Magic Keyboard’s $299 11-inch listing, the correct-size keyboard, and any Pencil you plan to buy. Do not compare a bare iPad with a complete MacBook.
- Test the physical routine. Decide whether you will hold the tablet, type on a lap, use a desk, or move between modes. The iPad’s flexibility is valuable only if you will actually switch between touch, pen, and keyboard input.
Where each choice can disappoint
iPad Pro limitations
- The Magic Keyboard is a separate purchase and its price increases the complete-system cost.
- There is only one Thunderbolt/USB 4 port and support for one external display.
- iPadOS may not provide the desktop application, plug-in, or file-management feature your workflow expects from macOS.
- The tablet is lightest without the keyboard; attaching it makes the package heavier and less comfortable to hold for long periods.
MacBook Pro limitations
- The built-in display is not documented as touch-enabled, so drawing and handwriting require an external input device or a different computer.
- The 14-inch model weighs 3.4 pounds, considerably more than the iPad Pro tablet.
- You lose the iPad’s tablet modes and Apple Pencil Pro workflow.
- If you need only one application, a keyboard, and occasional notes, its desktop hardware may be more than your touch-first routine requires.
Verdict
Buy the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard when touch, pen input, tablet portability, and flexible physical interaction define the job. It is the only device in this comparison that lets you draw or write directly on the screen, and the keyboard makes it capable of sustained typing when needed.
