If your new MacBook Pro with M3 Max is stuck during setup, first check its internet connection and power, then choose the fix that matches the symptom: adjust the network, give migration time or switch to a direct connection, or use macOS Recovery for startup and installation problems. These are general Apple silicon Mac steps, not evidence of an M3 Max-specific defect.

Before you start Setup Assistant

Open the lid to turn on the MacBook Pro and follow Setup Assistant. Connect the supplied power adapter and cable if the battery needs charging or you are preparing to transfer data. Keep internet access available: some setup steps require it, and macOS may need to update during initial setup. Setup Assistant guides you through Wi-Fi, transfer choices, accessibility options, account creation, and settings such as Location Services, Screen Time, Siri, and Touch ID. For Apple’s walkthrough, see Set up your MacBook Pro.

You do not have to migrate data to finish setup. You can configure the Mac as new and use Migration Assistant later.

Choose how to transfer your data

Source When to use it Connection or note
Another Mac During Setup Assistant or afterward with Migration Assistant Wi-Fi is convenient; a direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster, according to Apple. The cable must work with both computers’ ports.
Time Machine backup or startup disk During setup or afterward with Migration Assistant Have the backup or disk available. A Time Machine backup can also be restored later.
Windows PC During Setup Assistant or afterward with Migration Assistant Use the Windows Migration Assistant version for the macOS on the new Mac and follow the pairing code shown on screen.
iPhone or iPad-assisted setup During Setup Assistant on supported systems Apple’s current support page lists macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later on the Mac and iOS 18.4 or later or iPadOS 18.4 or later on the nearby device, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on both. Requirements can change; check Apple’s iPhone or iPad setup instructions.
Set up as new During Setup Assistant Skip transfer and run Migration Assistant later if you decide to move data.

Apple’s Migration Assistant guide covers the available transfer methods. For Mac-to-Mac migration, keep both Macs up to date, turn on Wi-Fi for wireless transfer, and keep the computers near each other. A large transfer can take hours and may appear to pause. A direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection may be faster, but it is not a guaranteed fix for a stalled transfer.

Fix “Mac setup can’t connect to Wi-Fi”

Joining a Wi-Fi network is not the same as reaching the internet. The network must allow internet access for setup steps that require it. Apple’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting recommends checking the connection and, when appropriate, restarting the Mac or router. Restarting the Mac can also renew its assigned network address; check that date and time are correct.

  • Confirm that the selected network has working internet access, not just a Wi-Fi connection.
  • Restart the Mac and check date and time.
  • If possible, try another network or restart the router.
  • If you are in Recovery and installation reports a network problem, try another network or Ethernet if available.

Fix a Mac migration that is taking forever or appears stuck

  1. Allow time for a large transfer. Apple notes that migration can take hours and may look paused.
  2. Check the setup on both Macs. For Mac-to-Mac transfer, install available macOS updates on both computers, enable Wi-Fi for wireless migration, and place the computers near each other.
  3. Consider a direct connection. Apple says Thunderbolt or Ethernet is often faster than wireless for Mac-to-Mac migration. Confirm that the cable fits both computers; a cable does not resolve every transfer problem.
  4. For a Windows PC, verify the migration app. Use the Windows Migration Assistant version that matches the target Mac’s macOS and enter the pairing code displayed during transfer.

Migration Assistant remains available after initial setup if you would rather finish configuring the Mac first. See Apple’s Migration Assistant instructions.

Fix a MacBook Pro black screen on startup

Start with the least disruptive checks. Disconnect USB, USB-C, and Thunderbolt accessories, then try starting the Mac again. If it starts normally, reconnect devices one at a time, restarting as needed, to identify whether an accessory is causing the problem. Apple’s startup troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

If the screen remains blank, use Recovery to repair the startup disk. Apple’s blank-screen troubleshooting instructions say to hold the power button for up to 10 seconds to turn off an Apple silicon Mac, then start macOS Recovery. In Recovery, open Disk Utility and repair the startup disk. Restart; if the blank screen continues, return to Recovery and reinstall macOS. A persistent blank screen may need service.

Fix a macOS update or installation error

  1. Check storage and internet. Make sure there is enough available storage and that the internet connection is stable.
  2. Repair the startup disk. Start Recovery, open Disk Utility, and run the repair process for the startup disk.
  3. Try installing from Recovery. If an installer downloaded earlier is reported damaged or unverifiable, delete it and download it again after disk repair.
  4. Escalate only if needed. Apple says firmware revive or restore is rarely needed for persistent installation issues on Apple silicon or T2 Macs. Follow Apple’s specific guidance rather than treating it as a routine first fix. Erasing the Mac is also a consequential step, not an initial troubleshooting measure.

Apple’s macOS installation troubleshooting explains the relevant recovery steps.

Restore files from a backup

Migration Assistant can restore files and settings from a Time Machine backup during setup or later. If the Mac starts to a flashing question mark, reinstall macOS before continuing with backup restoration, as Apple explains in its Migration Assistant guide. If setup is complete and you only need to recover data, you can use the existing backup without repeating initial setup.
