Start with the Mac’s exact charging requirements, then pack only the accessories that match your student’s courses, campus rules, and existing gear. There is no universal college tech kit: the right choices depend on the Mac model, the equipment the student already owns, and what the school or degree program requires.
What to pack first: the right Mac charger
Check the Mac’s exact model before choosing a charger. Apple’s recommendations vary by model, and a Mac may charge through USB-C, MagSafe, or either method. Use the model-specific guidance to confirm the recommended adapter and the appropriate charging cable. Apple’s Mac power-adapter guidance explains that a Mac that charges over USB-C can use a USB-C power adapter or display supporting USB Power Delivery (USB PD), and recommends at least the minimum wattage for that Mac.
A compatible adapter with lower wattage may still charge the computer, but it may be identified as a slow charger. Don’t assume that every USB-C charger will perform the same way: compare its wattage with Apple’s recommendation for the exact Mac, and check whether the needed cable is included.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Bring: the original charger, if available, or a compatible adapter and cable confirmed for the Mac model.
- Before replacing it: identify the model, charging connection, recommended wattage, and whether the student needs a more portable charger for a particular routine.
Which accessories are worth adding?
Apple’s college accessories assortment includes sleeves, USB-C adapters, cables, headphones, keyboards, mice, and power banks. These are possible accessory categories, not a checklist of necessities or evidence that every listed item suits every Mac or student.

| Accessory | Consider packing it when… | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Protective sleeve | The student wants separate protection for the Mac inside a backpack. | Fit, bag space, and the student’s carrying habits. The cited listing does not compare sleeve protection or durability. |
| USB-C adapter or cable | A device the student already expects to use needs a connection the Mac does not provide. | The Mac’s ports, the peripheral’s connection, and the specific function required. Don’t buy a hub or adapter without a real device in mind. |
| Headphones | The student studies or lives in shared spaces and does not already have a suitable pair. | Comfort, the student’s listening habits, and whether the existing pair is adequate. The cited listing does not establish a required type. |
| Keyboard or mouse | The student has a workflow or ergonomic preference that a separate input device would address. | Whether it will actually be used, plus desk space and portability. Neither is required for ordinary MacBook use. |
| Power bank | The student has a genuine need to work away from outlets. | Whether the particular power bank can charge the exact Mac at useful wattage. The cited listing does not validate any model’s Mac-charging capacity. |
Check school and dorm needs before buying more
Ask the school or department whether a course requires particular software, ports, storage, peripherals, or adapters. Check residence-hall rules and available desk space before considering larger equipment. Those requirements vary by institution and are not established by the available sources, so an external monitor, printer, storage drive, Ethernet adapter, or paid software should not be treated as a universal college requirement.
Mac accessory approval on Apple silicon
A new or unknown USB, Thunderbolt, or SD-card accessory may prompt for approval on an Apple silicon Mac laptop. The student may need to unlock the Mac to allow the accessory to connect. Apple notes that an accessory can still charge the Mac even if access is denied; charging and permission to access data are distinct. See Apple’s instructions for allowing accessories to connect.
