Short answer: choose a MacBook Air as the safer single-device default when your classes require conventional desktop software, extensive typing, dependable file management, or macOS. Choose an iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard when your required apps are confirmed to work on iPadOS and you will genuinely use touch, handwriting, drawing, or tablet flexibility. The iPad setup is not a like-for-like laptop purchase: its keyboard is separate, and the best choice depends more on software and workflow than on the M5 processor names.
The decision in one minute
A MacBook Air is a complete laptop. It includes an integrated keyboard and trackpad, runs macOS, and is designed around windowed applications, pointer input, and traditional computer file workflows.
An iPad Pro is a tablet. Adding Apple’s Magic Keyboard creates a laptop-like arrangement with keys and a trackpad, but the keyboard is an additional, model-specific purchase. You can also remove it and use the iPad as a touch device, with Apple Pencil Pro support on current iPad Pro M5 models.

Start with your school’s software requirements
Operating-system compatibility should come before processor comparisons. The MacBook Air uses macOS; the iPad Pro uses iPadOS. An app that exists on both platforms may still have different features, file-handling behavior, plug-in support, or exam restrictions on iPadOS.
Check the syllabus and department pages
Make a list of every application required or strongly recommended for your program. Include discipline-specific tools, programming environments, statistical packages, computer-aided design applications, media editors, virtual laboratory software, and browser-based systems that require desktop extensions. A school’s general “computer requirements” page may not cover a particular course.
Ask about exams and secure testing
Exam-proctoring systems can impose browser, camera, operating-system, or peripheral requirements. Ask the instructor, department, testing center, or IT help desk whether the exact iPad model and iPadOS version are supported. Do not assume that a system that works in Safari is accepted for a monitored exam.
Confirm file and peripheral workflows
Check how assignments are submitted and whether you must use local folders, network drives, removable storage, specialty peripherals, or desktop plug-ins. iPadOS can handle many common documents, but the workflow may not match a macOS application with unrestricted desktop file access. If a course provides a required plug-in or script, ask whether an iPadOS version exists.
If Windows software is mandatory
Neither product should be selected on the assumption that an unverified workaround will be acceptable. Ask whether the school supplies Windows PCs, a remote desktop, a virtual lab, or another supported method. The available product information does not verify any particular institution’s solution, so obtain that confirmation in writing before relying on an iPad or MacBook.
What you actually buy
MacBook Air: one named computer
The 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 is a 2026 model. Apple’s specifications list a weight of 1.23 kilograms (2.7 pounds). The computer includes its keyboard and trackpad, so the advertised laptop weight represents the core device you carry for normal laptop work.

Apple announced the M5 MacBook Air in March 2026 and described features including macOS Tahoe, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and increased starting storage. Those are product facts, not evidence that the Air is the best choice for every student. Storage needs still depend on your files, software, media projects, and whether your school provides cloud storage.

iPad Pro: tablet first, accessories added
The iPad Pro is sold as a tablet. Apple’s current US selector lists the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro separately, with a starting price of $279, and identifies compatibility with 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models using the M4 and M5 generations. That price was shown in the selector accessed October 13, 2026; prices and products can change without notice.
The keyboard includes backlit keys, a trackpad, USB-C pass-through charging, adjustable cantilever positioning, and front and back protection. Compatibility is model- and size-specific, so match the keyboard to the exact iPad generation and screen size before ordering. Older support pages can include different compatibility details; use the current selector for the model you are buying.
Budget the complete iPad configuration
Compare the MacBook Air with the complete iPad setup, not with the bare tablet. Your calculation should include:
- the exact iPad Pro size, generation, storage, and connectivity configuration;
- the compatible Magic Keyboard, currently listed from $279 in the US selector;
- Apple Pencil Pro if handwriting or drawing is part of your plan; and
- any case, adapter, storage, or other accessory the course requires.
Apple’s US education price list is dated April 1, 2026 and says prices and products can change without notice. Education eligibility and discounts can also vary. Treat displayed prices as time- and region-specific figures, then check the current store and your school’s purchasing rules.

How the two workflows differ
Long-form writing and research
Both setups can handle documents, web research, email, and common cloud services. The MacBook Air starts in the conventional laptop position: keyboard and trackpad are permanently available, windows can be arranged as on a desktop computer, and the device is not dependent on a detachable accessory for typing.

The iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard can also provide keys and a trackpad, but you are switching between a tablet and a keyboard case. That is useful when you alternate between typing and reading or annotating. It can be less suitable if your workflow constantly moves between many windows, external files, and desktop-only tools. Do not treat keyboard comfort as an objective winner; hand size, posture, desk setup, and personal preference matter.
Handwritten notes, diagrams, and annotation
The iPad Pro has the clearest advantage when the student will use touch and a stylus. Apple lists Apple Pencil Pro support for the 11-inch iPad Pro M5, and the same support should be checked against the exact model you choose. This makes handwritten lecture notes, marked-up readings, sketches, and diagrams possible without a separate tablet.
The MacBook Air configuration does not provide a built-in tablet touch surface. A student who only types may never miss that capability; a student who annotates every reading may use it daily. The deciding question is not whether the iPad can draw, but whether that workflow is important enough to justify its accessory cost and app checks.
Files, windows, and multitasking
macOS is the safer fit for students who routinely handle nested folders, downloaded project assets, desktop utilities, multiple monitor windows, or software that expects a full computer environment. iPadOS can be effective for focused tasks and cloud-based work, but its tablet-oriented interaction model should be tested with the exact course workflow.
Ask yourself how often you will need to import files from several locations, rename batches of documents, use a specialized desktop plug-in, or keep multiple tools visible while writing. If the answer is “often,” the MacBook Air is the lower-risk default. If most work happens in a small set of verified iPadOS apps and you value touch interaction, the iPad’s flexibility may matter more.
Portability: compare the complete setup
Apple lists the 13-inch MacBook Air at 1.23 kg (2.7 pounds). That is a useful reference because it describes the laptop you carry for ordinary use.

The gathered specifications do not provide a combined weight for an iPad Pro plus its compatible Magic Keyboard. Do not compare the Air with the bare iPad and call that a complete portability comparison. Look up the exact tablet and keyboard weights for your chosen size and add them together:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Record the iPad Pro weight for the exact 11-inch or 13-inch model.
- Record the matching Magic Keyboard weight for that size and generation.
- Add both figures, then include a Pencil, charger, case, and any adapter you actually carry.
- Compare the resulting bag weight with the 1.23 kg MacBook Air reference.
The iPad can still feel more portable in tablet mode because the keyboard can be removed, but a student who plans to type all day will usually carry that keyboard. Evaluate the mode you will use on campus, not the lightest possible configuration.
Battery claims and a fair comparison
Apple publishes battery figures for both product families, but the company’s results come from specified test setups. Configuration, software, brightness, network activity, connected accessories, and the type of work can change real use.
There is no independent, directly comparable student-workload test in the available evidence. Therefore, an Apple estimate for the MacBook Air and an Apple estimate for the iPad Pro should not be presented as a controlled classroom head-to-head result. If battery endurance is decisive, compare the official test conditions, then ask students with a similar workload or your campus support team about charging access rather than relying on a single headline number.
For the iPad, remember that using the Magic Keyboard changes how you carry and use the device, even though the keyboard has USB-C pass-through charging. The pass-through port does not turn the iPad into a MacBook or eliminate the need to plan for charging during a long day.

External displays and desk setups
External-monitor support is model-specific. Apple lists the 11-inch iPad Pro M5 as supporting one external display, with resolution and refresh limits that depend on the model. Check the current technical specifications for the exact configuration before buying a monitor or dock.

For the MacBook Air, verify the exact M5 configuration and current display specifications if a monitor is central to your study setup. Do not infer support from a different MacBook generation or size. If you regularly work at a desk with an external screen, keyboard, storage, and other peripherals, list every required connection and confirm it before purchase.
A practical decision process
Step 1: classify the computer’s role
- Only computer: favor the MacBook Air unless every required task is confirmed on iPadOS.
- Secondary note-taking device: the iPad Pro may be attractive because it can switch between tablet and keyboard modes.
- Shared or campus computer available: verify which assignments, exams, and files can still be completed independently on your personal device.
Step 2: mark non-negotiable applications
Write down each required app and label it “confirmed on iPadOS,” “macOS required,” “Windows required,” or “unknown.” Resolve every “unknown” with the instructor or IT department. One essential unsupported application can outweigh advantages such as lower carrying weight or stylus input.
Step 3: decide whether stylus input is a real requirement
Choose the iPad’s tablet workflow when you will regularly annotate, draw, or handwrite. If you expect to buy a Pencil but continue taking all notes on paper or typing, include that accessory in the cost without counting a benefit you will not use.
Step 4: calculate the real purchase total
Use the exact storage, screen size, keyboard, Pencil, and education-price eligibility. The iPad comparison is incomplete until the Magic Keyboard is included. Recheck prices on the day you buy because Apple’s education list and product availability can change.
Step 5: test your posture and typing habits
Try a MacBook keyboard and the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard in a store or campus technology center if possible. Type a page, use the trackpad, read in tablet mode, and switch between positions. A theoretical feature advantage is not useful if the setup causes discomfort during your normal study sessions.
Step 6: plan for failure and support
Ask where you will complete work if the device is being repaired, a required app stops working after an update, or an exam system rejects your configuration. A school loaner program, computer lab, or approved remote environment can change the risk calculation, but confirm that service before depending on it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing chip labels instead of software: M5 appears in both product families, but macOS and iPadOS provide different application environments.
- Comparing a bare iPad with a complete laptop: add the Magic Keyboard and any stylus to the iPad total.
- Assuming every iPad app equals its Mac version: verify features, plug-ins, file access, and exam support for your course.
- Using the lightest tablet figure: include the keyboard and the accessories you will carry every day.
- Turning battery estimates into classroom promises: Apple’s tests are not an independent, controlled student comparison.
- Buying an incompatible keyboard: match the exact iPad size and generation; current selector information takes priority over older compatibility pages.
- Assuming a workaround is approved: obtain school confirmation for remote desktops, virtual labs, or Windows access.
Who should choose each setup?
MacBook Air is the safer default when
- it is your only personal computer;
- your program uses macOS or desktop-class applications;
- you write for long periods and manage many files and windows;
- you want the keyboard and trackpad included in the computer purchase;
- you need a conventional laptop without relying on an accessory.
This recommendation reflects the Air’s integrated laptop design and macOS environment. It is not a claim that every student types faster or gets longer battery life on a MacBook.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsiPad Pro with Magic Keyboard makes sense when
- your required apps and exams are confirmed on iPadOS;
- you will use touch input, Apple Pencil Pro, or handwritten annotation frequently;
- you want to remove the keyboard for reading, drawing, or tablet use;
- you accept the separate keyboard purchase and model-specific compatibility;
- you have a confirmed plan for any Windows-only or desktop-only course requirement.
The iPad is most convincing when its tablet capabilities solve a real daily problem, not when it is treated as a cheaper substitute for a laptop without checking the complete configuration.
Bottom line for students in 2026
For an undecided student buying one device, the MacBook Air is the safer choice because it is already a full laptop and runs macOS. Select the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard instead when iPadOS compatibility is confirmed and the ability to handwrite, draw, annotate, or remove the keyboard is central to how you study. Include the keyboard’s separate cost, verify the exact model match, compare the weight of the complete setup, and treat Apple’s battery figures as manufacturer test results rather than a head-to-head classroom guarantee.
