Every Intel Retina MacBook Air released from 2018 through 2020 has two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports. The 2020 M1 MacBook Air instead has two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, but its hardware still supports only one external display. For an Intel Air that needs charging, wired networking, storage cards, several accessories and one or two monitors, a full Thunderbolt dock such as the CalDigit TS3 Plus is a sensible desk solution. A compact adapter is better when you only need one display or a single peripheral.
Which MacBook Air models have Thunderbolt 3?
Apple’s 2018 and 2019 Retina MacBook Air models include two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports. The Intel Retina MacBook Air introduced in 2020 also has two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Each port handles charging, DisplayPort output, Thunderbolt data at up to 40Gbps and USB 3.1 Gen 2 data at up to 10Gbps.
The M1 MacBook Air from 2020 uses two ports labeled Thunderbolt/USB 4. They support charging, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 3 up to 40Gbps, USB 4 up to 40Gbps and USB 3.1 Gen 2 up to 10Gbps. In practical dock terms, M1 Air owners should treat these as Thunderbolt-capable ports, but not assume that USB 4 changes the computer’s external-monitor limit.

Display support: Intel Air versus M1 Air
The display limit comes from the Mac’s graphics hardware and operating-system support, not simply from the number of video outputs on a dock. The built-in screen is included in Apple’s specifications below; the figures describe external displays.
| MacBook Air model | External display support | Port standard |
|---|---|---|
| Intel Retina, 2018 | One 5120×2880 (5K) display at up to 60Hz, or two 4096×2304 (4K) displays at up to 60Hz | Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports |
| Intel Retina, 2019 | One 5120×2880 (5K) display at up to 60Hz, or two 4096×2304 (4K) displays at up to 60Hz | Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports |
| Intel Retina, 2020 | One 6016×3384 (6K) display at 60Hz, one 5120×2880 (5K) display at 60Hz, or two 4096×2304 (4K) displays at 60Hz | Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports |
| M1 MacBook Air, 2020 | One external display up to 6K at 60Hz | Two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports |
Consequently, an Intel 2018 or 2019 Air can drive two 4K60 monitors when the dock and cabling are configured correctly. The Intel 2020 model adds support for a single 6K60 display while retaining the two-4K60 option. The M1 Air remains limited to one external display up to 6K60, even if a dock exposes two DisplayPort or HDMI connectors. Connecting a second monitor to such a dock does not bypass the host Mac’s GPU limit.
What a Thunderbolt dock adds
A dock combines several functions behind one cable to the Mac. The useful distinction is not “Thunderbolt versus USB-C” on the connector’s shape; it is whether the dock’s host connection and the computer both support Thunderbolt and whether the dock provides the ports you actually need.
- One-cable desk connection: connect the dock to the Air once, then leave monitors, power, Ethernet and accessories attached.
- Charging: the dock can send power to the Mac over the same Thunderbolt cable, reducing cable changes at the desk.
- Display outputs: a Thunderbolt dock can carry DisplayPort video, subject to the Air model’s resolution and monitor-count limit.
- Wired networking: Gigabit Ethernet is useful for a stable connection when Wi-Fi is congested or unavailable.
- Peripheral expansion: USB-A, USB-C, SD-card and audio ports support accessories that the Air itself does not include.
Choose the dock around the host Mac first. A dock with many outputs cannot create additional display capability that Apple does not expose.

CalDigit TS3 Plus: a full-featured choice for Intel Air models
The CalDigit TS3 Plus is a Thunderbolt 3 dock intended for Thunderbolt 3 Mac and PC computers. CalDigit specifies up to 87W of laptop power delivery and support for one 5K60 display or two 4K60 displays on Intel Macs. That display statement aligns with the Intel Air configurations above; it does not turn an M1 Air into a dual-monitor computer.
Its 15-port layout is aimed at a permanent workstation rather than a minimalist travel kit:
- Two Thunderbolt 3 ports
- One DisplayPort 1.2 output
- Five USB-A ports rated at 5Gbps
- Two USB-C data ports: one at 10Gbps and one at 5Gbps
- SD 4.0 UHS-II card reader
- Gigabit Ethernet
- Optical audio output
- Analog audio input and output
For an Intel Air owner who needs charging, Ethernet, SD cards, multiple USB-A devices and one or two external displays, that port mix can replace a collection of small adapters. Confirm the exact Air generation and monitor plan before ordering, and use a certified 40Gbps Thunderbolt cable between the Mac and dock.
The TS3 Plus is not compatible with a computer that offers USB-C only without Thunderbolt. This matters if the dock might later be used with another laptop: inspect that computer’s specifications rather than relying on the connector’s appearance.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
When a smaller adapter is the better choice
A full dock is unnecessary if your setup has only one simple requirement. Apple lists several focused adapters:
- USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter: HDMI, one standard USB device and USB-C charging.
- USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter: VGA display output with the adapter’s supported USB-C functions.
- Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter: connection to Thunderbolt 2 equipment.
- USB-C to USB Adapter: connection for a USB accessory using a USB-C port on the Air.
Use a compact adapter when you need a single HDMI or VGA display, one USB device or occasional charging passthrough. It costs less space and is easier to carry than a desktop dock, but it does not provide the TS3 Plus’s combination of Ethernet, SD, audio and many permanently connected ports.
How to choose a dock for your exact Air
1. Identify the processor and year
Open Apple menu → About This Mac. An Intel Air from 2018, 2019 or 2020 is the straightforward Thunderbolt 3 case. An Air labeled with an Apple M1 chip is the 2020 M1 model and has the one-external-display ceiling.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. List the peripherals that must remain connected
Count USB-A devices, USB-C data devices, SD cards, Ethernet, audio equipment and any display cables. If the list is limited to one display and one peripheral, start with an adapter. If several items stay on the desk, a dock’s one-cable arrangement is more valuable.
4. Verify host compatibility and cable bandwidth
Confirm that the dock explicitly supports Thunderbolt 3 and that the included or purchased host cable is a certified 40Gbps Thunderbolt cable. A USB-C cable may fit physically while failing to provide the expected Thunderbolt performance or monitor configuration.
5. Check power delivery as an advertised specification
Compare the dock’s stated USB Power Delivery output with the Air’s charging requirements and your workload. The TS3 Plus advertises up to 87W. Treat that as the dock’s maximum advertised output, not a guarantee that every connected computer will draw that amount.
6. Plan the physical connections
Connect the power supply to the dock, attach the monitor cable to the dock’s supported video output, connect Ethernet and peripherals, then connect the dock’s host Thunderbolt port to the Air. Keep the monitor set to the resolution and refresh rate supported by both the Air and the display.

Common problems and fixes
The dock charges but the monitor stays blank
- Check that the cable is connected to the dock’s host Thunderbolt port, not a downstream port with a different function.
- Confirm that the monitor input matches the physical connection and that the display is powered on.
- Test a certified 40Gbps Thunderbolt cable; a charge-capable USB-C cable may not carry the required Thunderbolt data path.
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Displays (or System Preferences → Displays on older macOS) and hold the Option key if you need to reveal the display-detection control.
A second monitor is not detected on an M1 Air
This is normally a platform limit rather than a defective dock. Apple specifies one external display up to 6K60 for the 2020 M1 MacBook Air, and CalDigit documents the same one-display restriction for M1/M2 MacBook Air models through their Thunderbolt/USB4 bus. A dock’s extra video connector cannot change that host-GPU limit.
Accessories work intermittently
- Reconnect the dock’s power and host cable, then restart the Air with the dock attached.
- Move high-bandwidth storage to the dock’s faster USB-C data port when available.
- Check whether the dock manufacturer requires a firmware update for your macOS version.
- Disconnect one accessory at a time to identify a failing cable, bus-powered drive or overloaded setup.
The dock is not recognized at all
Confirm that the computer has Thunderbolt rather than USB-C-only connectivity, inspect both ends of the cable for damage, and try the other Thunderbolt port on the Air. If the dock is being used with a different laptop, repeat the compatibility check for that machine; the TS3 Plus requires a Thunderbolt 3-capable host.
Dock versus adapter decision guide
| Your requirement | More suitable choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One HDMI display, one USB device and charging | USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter | Provides those listed connections without unused desktop ports |
| One VGA display | USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter | Matches the display connector directly |
| Thunderbolt 2 peripheral | Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter | Designed for that older Thunderbolt connection |
| Several USB-A devices, Ethernet, SD, audio and one or two monitors on an Intel Air | CalDigit TS3 Plus | Offers 15 ports, charging and the required desk connectivity |
| Two external monitors on an M1 Air | No dock can provide this through the Mac’s normal Thunderbolt/USB4 bus | The M1 Air is specified for one external display up to 6K60 |
What to verify before purchase
- The exact MacBook Air year and processor shown in About This Mac.
- The number of external displays and their native resolution and refresh rate.
- Whether the dock’s host connection explicitly says Thunderbolt 3, not only USB-C.
- The advertised Power Delivery wattage and whether the dock includes its power supply.
- USB-A and USB-C port speeds, Ethernet speed, SD-card standard and audio connectors.
- Whether a certified 40Gbps Thunderbolt cable is supplied or must be purchased separately.
- Any required firmware updater and macOS compatibility notes from the dock manufacturer.
For Intel Air models, the TS3 Plus is the strongest fit when a single-cable, full-desk setup is the goal. For an M1 Air, buy it only for its charging and peripheral expansion while accepting the one-display limit. If your needs stop at one monitor and one accessory, choose the smaller adapter that matches those connectors instead of paying for ports you will not use.
