First determine whether your Mac cannot join the Wi-Fi network or joins it but cannot reach the internet. Those are different failures, and the quickest way to narrow down the cause is to compare the Mac with another device and, if possible, another network.
Is your Mac failing to join Wi-Fi, or is the internet not working?
Check the Wi-Fi menu to confirm Wi-Fi is on and identify the network your Mac is trying to use. If the Mac cannot join that network, focus on the connection itself. If it joins but websites, email, and other internet services do not work, the Wi-Fi link may be active while the network’s internet connection is not.
Use these comparisons to narrow down where the issue may be:
- Try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If several devices cannot get online, investigate the router, modem, or internet service rather than assuming the Mac is the cause.
- Try the Mac on another Wi-Fi network. If it works elsewhere, the original network or its internet service is a more likely place to look.
These checks point you toward the right part of the connection, but they do not prove the cause. Apple’s guidance distinguishes joining a Wi-Fi network from being able to access the internet through it. Apple: If your Mac isn’t connecting to the internet over Wi-Fi

What to check on the Mac first
- Restart the Mac. Restarting can renew the internet address assigned when the Mac joins Wi-Fi. A manual renewal of that address is called renewing the DHCP lease.
- Check the date and time. Make sure they are correct.
- Install available macOS updates if you can connect elsewhere. If another Wi-Fi network is available, use it to connect and update macOS.
- Check VPNs and network-monitoring software. A VPN or other software that monitors or interacts with network connections may affect internet access; check whether it is involved in the problem.
Apple includes these checks in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Use the Mac’s built-in Wi-Fi diagnostics
Check Wi-Fi Recommendations
Open the Wi-Fi menu and look for Wi-Fi Recommendations. If the option appears, macOS has detected an issue and offers suggestions. The option is not available for personal hotspots or some enterprise-security networks, including WPA Enterprise and WPA2 Enterprise.

Run Wireless Diagnostics
- Hold the Option key while clicking the Wi-Fi status menu.
- Choose Open Wireless Diagnostics.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and review the detected issues and suggested solutions.
Wireless Diagnostics analyzes the connection but does not change network settings. It also creates a compressed archive that can help an administrator, service provider, or IT support person investigate. Apple says the archive is saved in /var/tmp; its filename begins with WirelessDiagnostics and ends with .tar.gz. Apple: Use Wireless Diagnostics on your Mac

Apple publishes settings guidance for Wi-Fi routers and access points covering DHCP lease time, NAT, WMM, and DNS. These are network-specific settings, not universal fixes: for example, Apple warns that double NAT may prevent access to some network or internet resources, and that disabling WMM can affect performance and reliability on supported routers. Consult the guidance and your router manufacturer’s instructions before changing advanced settings. Apple: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

- Contact your ISP if multiple devices fail on the same network, the modem or service status suggests an outage, or you suspect the internet connection itself is down.
- Contact the network administrator for a workplace or school network, especially if access is managed or Wireless Diagnostics identifies a problem that requires administrator help. The diagnostics archive may be useful to share.
- Contact Apple Support or an appropriate Mac service provider if other devices work on the same Wi-Fi but the Mac still cannot connect after the Mac-side checks and diagnostics.
If the Mac works on another Wi-Fi network, Apple recommends checking with the ISP or network administrator responsible for the original network. Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance
