On U.S. starting prices, the Mac Studio with M5 Max costs less than 25 months of ChatGPT Pro 200; the M5 Ultra costs more. At $200 per month, 25 months of Pro totals $5,000 before taxes. Compared with that total, Apple’s $2,499 M5 Max starting price is $2,501 lower, while its $5,499 M5 Ultra starting price is $499 higher. That is purchase-price arithmetic—not proof that a desktop replaces ChatGPT Pro’s hosted models and features.
What the 25-month comparison shows
OpenAI lists ChatGPT Pro 200 at $200 per month, billed monthly, with no annual billing option. Apple’s September 22, 2026 U.S. announcement lists Mac Studio starting prices of $2,499 for M5 Max and $5,499 for M5 Ultra. At those listed prices, the simple parity point is about 12.5 months for M5 Max and 27.5 months for M5 Ultra.

The calculation uses Apple’s starting prices and assumes the subscription price stays constant. It excludes taxes, configuration upgrades, electricity, peripherals, software, resale value, and financing. It also assigns no value to the Mac Studio’s non-AI uses. The $5,000 is a subscription bill over time; the Mac figures are purchase prices for entry configurations.
What each option actually gives you
ChatGPT Pro is a hosted service
OpenAI describes Pro as providing access to hosted models and product capabilities that include reasoning, research, coding, and other ChatGPT features. The subscription does not give you a local, offline model running on your own computer. OpenAI says Pro 200 subscriptions are available again, but subscribers who do not qualify for grandfathering have a lower usage allowance than the previous grandfathered offer. Check the current plan details before subscribing, since the allowance is part of what you are paying for.

Mac Studio is a computer, not a ChatGPT subscription
Apple positions Mac Studio as hardware for on-device AI and professional workflows, and says it can support large local models. The announced M5 Max configuration supports up to 128GB of unified memory; M5 Ultra supports up to 512GB. Those specifications describe hardware capacity, not evidence that a particular local model matches ChatGPT Pro in capability, output quality, or convenience. Buying the Mac does not include ChatGPT Pro.
How to decide whether the price difference matters
- Choose around the work, not just the break-even month. A Mac Studio may make sense if you also need a multipurpose workstation and want to run local software. ChatGPT Pro is the relevant option if you need its hosted model access and product features.
- Check the actual Mac configuration. The $2,499 and $5,499 figures are starting prices; upgrades can raise the purchase cost and move the simple parity point later.
- Account for the costs the calculation leaves out. Electricity, peripherals, software, taxes, financing, and resale value affect ownership cost. Their net effect depends on your setup and use, and no neutral estimate here establishes a total-cost comparison.
- Consider whether the computer would be useful without AI. The arithmetic gives no credit for other work the desktop can do. If you would buy a workstation anyway, its cost is not solely an AI expense; if AI is the only reason, compare the full configured cost with the service you would actually use.
- Do not treat capability as interchangeable. The listed prices cannot tell you whether local models will meet your needs or whether Pro’s usage allowance and features are worth the recurring fee.
If you are considering a Mac lease
Apple advertises Mac leases through Apple Upgrade for eligible U.S. customers. Its purchase page describes 24- or 36-month leases and says the original device must be returned in good working condition at the end of a lease or early upgrade. Apple’s September 2026 announcement gives an M5 Max example of $48.99 per month for 36 months, excluding taxes and trade-in credit. A lease is a different cash-flow arrangement from buying and keeping a Mac, so its monthly payment should not be substituted into the outright-purchase parity calculation.

Bottom line for an AI budget
Using only U.S. listed starting prices, M5 Max reaches subscription-price parity at roughly 12.5 months, while M5 Ultra takes roughly 27.5 months. At month 25, Pro costs $5,000 before taxes—less than the M5 Ultra starting price and more than the M5 Max starting price. Treat this as a narrow price comparison: it does not establish that local AI on either Mac replaces ChatGPT Pro or delivers equivalent results.
