Mac Studio supports genlock over USB-C on models with M5 Max or M5 Ultra, giving virtual-production teams a way to synchronize display playback with camera capture. It is not a standalone sync system: Apple’s documented setup also requires compatible docks, a sync generator, cabling, a variable-refresh-rate (VRR) display and a camera app that supports genlock.
What genlock does on Mac Studio
Genlock coordinates the timing of video playback and camera capture against a shared reference. In virtual production, a display shows a moving background while performers are filmed in front of it. If the display and cameras are synchronized, frames can line up more cleanly for frame-accurate editing, reducing the need for manual frame-by-frame alignment. Apple describes this workflow in its virtual-production setup guide.
On the supported Mac Studio models, the genlock-enabled display signal is output over USB-C/Thunderbolt 5. “Built-in” describes support in the computer; it does not mean the Mac contains every component needed to synchronize a production. Apple identifies Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra and macOS 27 Golden Gate as a video playback option. Its technical specifications list genlock under the M5-series Thunderbolt 5 ports.
Which Mac Studio models support it?
Apple identifies the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio as supporting genlock over USB-C. Do not assume the feature applies to earlier Mac Studio generations: the cited specifications identify it for the M5-series models.

Genlock is a production-synchronization feature, not a general-purpose editing-performance boost. It does not by itself make rendering or editing faster, and Apple has not published a synchronization-accuracy benchmark in the cited materials.
What equipment the setup needs
Apple’s documented arrangement combines the Mac, compatible cameras and a shared sync system. Check that the dock, generator, camera receivers and frame-rate options work together before assembling a multi-camera rig.

- Supported Mac: Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra, running macOS 27 Golden Gate.
- Genlock-capable dock: Apple calls for a USB-C dock with genlock input and output for the Mac and each iPhone. Blackmagic Camera ProDock is an example named by Apple.
- Sync generator and cabling: Use a genlock-capable generator and BNC cables. A BNC splitter is optional when connecting multiple devices.
- Camera and app: Capture can use iPhone 17 Pro or later Pro models running iOS 26 or later, or a third-party camera that supports genlock. The camera app must also support the feature; Apple lists the latest Final Cut Camera and compatible third-party apps such as Blackmagic Camera.
- VRR display: Use a variable-refresh-rate display for background playback. Apple gives a large-screen OLED television or projector as examples. The Mac can connect over HDMI or USB-C/Thunderbolt.
- Optional storage: An external SSD can be used for iPhone footage.
In a typical wireless multi-camera arrangement, each iPhone needs its own sync receiver. Confirm the receiver topology and compatibility with the generator and docks for the specific rig; a shared generator does not remove the need for a receiver at each wireless camera.
How to configure sync and the display
- Connect the sync chain. Connect the generator to the genlock input on the supported dock or docks with BNC cabling, then connect the Mac and cameras as required by the dock arrangement. Use a splitter if the setup needs to distribute the signal to multiple devices.
- Set a common frame rate. Set the generator’s frame rate to match the iPhone recording frame rate. The recording and display resolutions do not have to match. Apple recommends tri-level sync for progressive video when available.
- Enable VRR and reduce display processing. Turn on Game Mode or a similar variable-refresh-rate mode. Disable motion enhancement, noise reduction, super resolution and black-frame insertion where available; these processes can add latency and affect synchronization.
- Check the operating refresh rate. Mac Studio’s selected Genlock refresh rate adjusts to the display’s VRR operating range. For example, a display outputting 60 Hz may still be synchronized to a 30 Hz reference.
- Account for remaining delay if necessary. Apple says certain apps can adjust for display delay, but that adjustment can create ghosting. Evaluate the result in the actual playback and capture setup.
Choosing M5 Max or M5 Ultra
Both models support the relevant genlock feature, so choose between them according to the rest of the production workload rather than genlock alone. Consider the number and format of video streams, codec needs, rendering and effects load, memory requirements, display count and total system budget.

Apple announced US launch starting prices of $2,499 for M5 Max and $5,499 for M5 Ultra, with customer availability beginning September 22, 2026. These are launch prices announced for the United States, not guaranteed current quotes; final cost depends on configuration and market. Apple’s announcement also cites up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 at 30 fps for simultaneous playback on M5 Ultra and up to 3x faster Magic Mask performance in DaVinci Resolve Studio versus M4 Max. Those are Apple’s performance claims, not independent benchmarks, and they do not measure genlock accuracy.

Genlock matters most when a production needs synchronized playback and capture—for example, filming against a dynamic background in virtual production, particularly with multiple cameras. The practical benefit depends on the complete signal chain, including VRR behavior, camera and app support, sync hardware and display latency.

If the work is ordinary editing or playback without synchronized camera capture, genlock alone is not a reason to choose the higher-tier Mac Studio. For a virtual-production build, confirm compatibility across the docks, generator, receivers, camera apps and display before settling on the Mac configuration.
