Choose based on the operating system and exact applications your home office requires—not on a blanket claim that one type is faster or a better deal. The Mac mini is the natural fit if you want macOS or depend on Mac-specific software. A Windows mini PC makes more sense when your work requires Windows or a particular model offers the ports and upgrade options you need.

Start with the operating system and your work apps

The Mac mini runs macOS. Apple’s specifications cover the 2024 Mac mini family, including M4 and M4 Pro configurations. If you already use macOS or rely on Mac-specific applications, start with the Mac mini and confirm that the software and peripherals you need support the configuration you plan to buy. Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications describe the hardware, not independent performance testing.

Windows mini PCs are a broad category rather than one standardized product. As one example, the MINISFORUM UM870 Slim listing specifies Windows 11 Pro support. If your employer requires Windows, or a work application or device depends on it, compare specific Windows models rather than treating every mini PC as interchangeable. The UM870 Slim listing gives that model’s specifications; verify the exact configuration and compatibility for your own setup.

What to compare Mac mini (2024) MINISFORUM UM870 Slim example What to check
Operating system macOS; Apple lists M4 and M4 Pro configurations. Windows 11 Pro support is specified in the vendor listing. Confirm required apps, employer IT requirements, and peripheral compatibility for the exact model.
Memory and storage Apple lists configurations; a user upgrade path is not established by the cited specifications. Two DDR5 SODIMM slots, up to 96 GB, and two M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots are specified. Check what RAM and SSD are included, whether a listing is barebones, and whether upgrades are supported for the configuration you are considering.
Displays and ports Apple lists Thunderbolt and HDMI display support, including up to three external displays on specified configurations. The listing specifies HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, USB4, USB-A, and 2.5 Gb Ethernet. Match the exact outputs to your monitor count, resolution and refresh rate, plus the peripherals already on your desk.
Energy use ENERGY STAR reports power figures for the Apple Mac mini (M4), model A3238. A corresponding ENERGY STAR record for a Windows mini PC was not established. Do not infer which category uses less energy from figures for only one model.
Price and performance A current comparable price and independent benchmark result were not established. A current comparable price and independent benchmark result were not established. Compare equivalent memory and storage bundles, and seek independent tests using workloads like yours.

Check displays, ports, and network connections against your desk

Before buying, count the displays you use and note their resolution and refresh rate, then list the connections needed for your keyboard, storage, audio equipment, and network. Compare those requirements with the exact computer configuration and monitor compatibility information. The Mac mini specifications list Thunderbolt and HDMI display support; the UM870 Slim listing names HDMI, DisplayPort, USB4, USB-A, and Ethernet. The presence of a port alone does not establish support for every monitor mode or accessory.

Neither specification source establishes that a monitor, keyboard, or mouse is included. Plan to use compatible peripherals you already own or obtain them separately.

Decide whether memory or storage expansion matters

The UM870 Slim listing identifies two replaceable SODIMM memory slots supporting up to 96 GB and two M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots. Those details apply to that model, not to Windows mini PCs generally. Apple’s cited specifications list Mac mini configurations but do not establish a comparative repairability assessment or a user-upgrade path. If expansion is important, check the service and upgrade information for the exact computer and configuration before purchase.

Use energy figures carefully

ENERGY STAR’s certification record for Apple Mac mini (M4), model A3238, lists 2.9 W long idle, 0.1 W off mode, and 0.8 W sleep mode. The record covers the United States and Canada and gives a certification date of 2025-10-16. These are figures for that specific record, not a comparison with a Windows mini PC; they do not establish which computer will use less energy in your office. See the ENERGY STAR record.

Choose the computer that fits your workload

Choose the Mac mini if

  • You want macOS or depend on Mac-specific software.
  • The available configuration and display connections fit your work and existing peripherals.

Choose a Windows mini PC if

  • Your employer, software, or workflow requires Windows.
  • A specific model’s ports and documented memory or storage expansion suit your current setup or future plans.

For a typical office mix—web research, email, project management, video meetings, reviewing video, and occasional editing—identify the applications and peripherals you actually use, then match them to the operating system and configuration. That list alone does not establish a speed winner or determine how much memory or storage you need; those depend on the specific workload and configuration.

What to verify before ordering

  • Exact model, processor, operating system, and included memory and storage.
  • Whether the listing is barebones and what components, if any, must be supplied separately.
  • Supported display count, resolution, and refresh rate for the monitors you plan to connect.
  • Required video, USB, and network connections.
  • Warranty and return terms for the seller and region.

Prices, configurations, and availability change, and a comparable current price was not established for these products. No standardized head-to-head benchmark establishes a performance winner. Compare equivalent configurations and consult independent testing that reflects your own workload before deciding.
