You can run a coding agent with a model hosted on a Mac mini using Ollama, but the right setup depends on the machine’s memory, available storage, chosen model, and agent integration. Ollama documents support for Apple M-series Macs running macOS Sonoma 14 or newer, plus a workflow that launches coding agents from a project directory. Its documentation does not establish one ideal model or guarantee a particular speed or coding quality for every Mac mini configuration.

Which Mac mini configurations does this setup cover?

Apple’s specifications for the Mac mini (2024) describe M4 and M4 Pro models. The listed memory and starting SSD capacities differ; larger SSD options are available. These are specifications for the 2024 model, not a confirmation of the current lineup or availability in every region.

2024 configuration Unified memory Starting SSD capacity Thunderbolt
M4 16GB; configurable to 24GB or 32GB 256GB; larger options available Thunderbolt 4
M4 Pro 24GB; configurable to 48GB or 64GB 512GB; larger options available Thunderbolt 5

Memory is shared by macOS and workloads such as the model runtime; the cited specifications do not say which model size, context setting, or coding quality is appropriate for each memory tier. Treat it as a capacity constraint to evaluate against your planned workload, not as a performance guarantee. Check Apple’s current regional listing before buying, since these specifications are specific to the 2024 model.

What should you check before installing?

  • macOS and chip: Ollama’s macOS documentation lists macOS Sonoma 14 or newer and Apple M-series CPU and GPU support.
  • Free disk space: Ollama says model files can occupy tens to hundreds of gigabytes. A model download may therefore be a significant storage commitment, especially on a lower-capacity internal SSD. The documentation also describes changing the model storage location if the home directory lacks space.
  • Agent and model choice: Decide which coding-agent integration you intend to use, then check its current compatibility and configuration requirements. The available documentation does not identify a universally best model for a given Mac mini memory tier.

If internal storage is tight, consider whether to use a supported external storage location for model files and verify the current Ollama instructions for configuring it. An external drive provides storage capacity; it does not add unified memory, and the cited sources make no claim that it improves inference speed.

How to set up a local coding-agent workflow

  1. Confirm the machine: Check the Mac’s chip, macOS version, free disk space, and intended model. The documented macOS requirement is Sonoma 14 or newer on an Apple M-series Mac.
  2. Install Ollama: Get the macOS distribution and follow Ollama’s current installation instructions. Follow the app-based setup documented there rather than relying on an unverified installation command.
  3. Plan model storage: Check available space before downloading. Ollama notes that model files can range from tens to hundreds of gigabytes; use its current documentation if you need to change where they are stored.
  4. Choose a model: Download a model using its exact, current identifier in Ollama’s documentation. No model tag is recommended here because the cited sources do not establish a best choice for a particular Mac mini configuration.
  5. Launch an agent from your project: Ollama’s quickstart describes installing Codex CLI first, opening a terminal in the project directory, and running ollama launch codex. It also documents ollama launch claude as an agent path. Check the live quickstart for current prerequisites and commands before using them.
  6. Consider an editor integration: Continue’s Ollama guide describes another route for local coding assistance in an editor. Treat its configuration as an integration path to verify, not as evidence that every model or feature works identically.
  7. Validate your own workload: Start with a small code explanation, then try a bounded change in a disposable branch and run the project’s tests. This checks the setup against your codebase without assuming general speed or quality claims.

What does “local” mean for a coding agent?

Running a model locally does not, by itself, establish that every part of an agent workflow stays on the Mac. Check the selected integration’s request routing and whether cloud features are enabled before making privacy or offline-use assumptions. Neither the Ollama setup documentation nor the Continue guide establishes that all agent operations are local in every configuration.

What performance can you expect?

The cited sources provide product specifications and setup guidance, not a benchmark for coding agents on these Mac mini configurations. They do not establish a guaranteed response speed, context capacity, or coding-quality score for a specific memory tier. Results depend on the exact machine, model identifier, context setting, agent version, and task; verify those details with your own project rather than extrapolating from the chip name alone.
