If your Mac feels slow while Memory Pressure is yellow or red, open Activity Monitor > Memory while the slowdown is happening. Check the pressure graph, Swap Used, Compressed memory, and the App Memory column together. Yellow or red pressure that remains high during your normal workload points to sustained memory demand; a short spike may simply reflect a temporary task.
Do not diagnose the problem from “free memory” alone. macOS compresses inactive data and uses otherwise idle RAM for file caches, reclaiming that space when applications need it. The practical question is whether your workload keeps memory pressure elevated, drives swap activity, or is being dominated by one misbehaving process.
What Mac Memory Pressure actually measures
Memory Pressure is macOS’s summary of how efficiently available memory is serving current processing needs. Apple’s Activity Monitor guidance describes three qualitative states:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Graph color | Apple’s meaning | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Memory is being used efficiently. | The current workload is not creating a sustained memory constraint. |
| Yellow | The Mac might eventually need more RAM. | Watch whether the color persists during ordinary work and whether swap activity rises. |
| Red | The Mac needs more RAM. | Sustained red pressure means the workload is exceeding practical memory capacity for that Mac. |
Apple does not publish percentage cutoffs for green, yellow, or red in the cited Activity Monitor guidance. A color is therefore a workload signal, not a universal benchmark that applies to every Mac.

The pressure calculation considers free memory, the rate at which data is swapped, wired memory, and file-cached memory. That is why a Mac can show little free RAM and still feel responsive: cached data can be discarded, and inactive memory can be compressed before macOS resorts to more disk swapping.
“When you have free or unused memory, your computer performance does not necessarily improve.” — Apple Support, Activity Monitor guidance
Why low free memory is not automatically a fault
Modern macOS tries to make productive use of RAM rather than leave it empty. Frequently used file data may remain in a cache so it can be reopened quickly. When an application needs that capacity, the cache can be overwritten. Inactive application memory can also be compressed, allowing more data to remain in RAM without immediately writing everything to disk.

A healthy system may have a small free-memory number while its pressure graph stays green. Conversely, a machine can feel slow with apparently available memory if a process is consuming resources abnormally, the workload is rapidly changing, or the system is under pressure from wired memory and swap activity.
Activity Monitor workflow: diagnose the slowdown while it happens
Take measurements during the same browser session, project, virtual machine, or development setup that normally causes the slowdown. Looking only after closing the workload can hide the process responsible.
- Reproduce the symptom. Open the apps and browser windows you normally use, then perform the task that makes the Mac sluggish. Note whether the problem is constant, appears after a particular action, or disappears when one application closes.
- Open the correct pane. Choose Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor, then select the Memory tab.
- Record the graph state. Observe whether Memory Pressure is green, yellow, or red. A brief spike during an export or launch is different from a color that remains elevated for the whole session.
- Sort by App Memory. Click the App Memory column heading. Look for an application that dominates the list or whose value keeps growing while you do little additional work.
- Check Compressed memory. Compression is a normal macOS technique for fitting inactive data into RAM. It becomes more useful diagnostically when it rises alongside persistent yellow or red pressure and the Mac becomes less responsive.
- Check Swap Used. Swap Used is startup-disk space used to move unused files to and from RAM. Treat it as evidence of memory activity during this workload, not as a universal failure threshold.
- Quit one suspect at a time. Save work, quit the application or browser windows that are no longer needed, and watch whether pressure, swap activity, and responsiveness improve. Apple specifically recommends checking whether an app is driving pressure and quitting it when it is no longer needed.
- Repeat with your normal workload. If pressure returns only when a particular combination of apps is open, the issue may be workload capacity rather than a single defective process. If one app rapidly recreates the problem by itself, investigate that app’s updates, extensions, files, or plug-ins.
How to read Swap Used without chasing a false threshold
Swap is the mechanism that lets macOS move less-active memory contents between RAM and the startup disk. Activity Monitor reports the amount of startup-disk space currently used for that purpose. Swap Used can therefore increase during a legitimate heavy workload, especially when several large applications are open at once.

There is no authoritative Apple percentage or gigabyte cutoff that proves swapping is harmful on every Mac. The useful observation is whether swap activity continues or grows while you are actively working and whether that coincides with sustained yellow or red pressure and visible delays. A one-time increase after opening a large project is less informative than recurring swap activity whenever your normal session is running.
Disk-based memory is slower than keeping data in RAM, so frequent movement can contribute to pauses. The effect depends on the Mac, storage, application mix, and access pattern; Apple’s cited guidance does not quantify a fixed performance penalty for a particular amount of swap.
Find the process causing pressure
A single app keeps growing
If one application’s App Memory rises continuously during a stable task, quit it and observe the graph. If pressure falls promptly and the Mac becomes responsive, that process is the first place to look. Reopen the app with a smaller document or fewer plug-ins, update it using the developer’s supported channel, and test whether the growth returns.
A browser session is the largest consumer
Many tabs, web applications, video pages, and extensions can collectively consume substantial memory. Close windows and tabs you no longer need, then retest the same task. If a particular site or extension repeatedly causes the increase, isolate it by opening the task in a private window or with extensions disabled, if the browser provides those controls.
Several legitimate heavy apps are open
Virtual machines, large media projects, extensive browser sessions, and development tools are workload examples that can require substantial RAM. None is an automatic diagnosis; the deciding evidence is the pressure graph and responsiveness while that combination is active. Close or pause one heavy workload and see whether the system returns to green without restarting everything.
App Memory looks ordinary but pressure remains high
Pressure also reflects wired memory, compressed memory, swap rate, and file-cached memory. Background and login items may consume capacity even when no single foreground app is conspicuously large. Check what launches automatically, disable only items you recognize and no longer need, and then repeat the workload test.

Practical ways to reduce swapping
Reduce concurrent demand
- Quit applications you are not using, especially those holding large projects or virtual machines open.
- Close browser windows and tabs that are no longer part of the current task.
- Pause or finish one memory-heavy operation before starting another, such as exporting media while running a virtual machine.
- In development environments, stop unused simulators, containers, language servers, and build processes.
These steps lower the active working set. They do not create additional physical RAM, but they can keep a fixed-capacity Mac from repeatedly paging data.
Keep room on the startup disk
Because Swap Used occupies startup-disk space, the disk must have adequate free capacity for macOS to perform swapping. Apple does not publish a universal free-space percentage or a swap cutoff. Monitor available space in System Settings > General > Storage (or the corresponding Storage view on older macOS releases) and remove or move files you no longer need before a disk becomes nearly full. Do not treat a specific percentage as an Apple-certified requirement.
Restart only when the evidence points to a stuck process
A restart clears a process whose memory use has become abnormal and is a useful diagnostic reset. If pressure is normal after reboot but returns as one app runs, the app or its workload remains the likely cause. If pressure becomes yellow or red again simply by reopening your ordinary set of applications, a restart has not solved an underlying capacity limit.

Do not rely on “memory cleaner” promises
Utilities cannot manufacture physical RAM. macOS already compresses inactive memory and manages file caches. A tool that merely purges caches may make free-memory numbers look different without improving the workload that caused the pressure. Consider third-party diagnostics only if they provide a clearly documented, safe function beyond the metrics already available in Activity Monitor and support your macOS version.
Decide whether the problem is an app, a workload, storage, or RAM
| Evidence during the real workload | Most likely direction | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure spikes briefly, then returns to green; no continuing slowdown | Temporary demand | Identify the task that caused the spike and avoid stacking another heavy task on top of it. |
| One process grows unusually in App Memory; quitting it restores responsiveness | Application, extension, document, or plug-in behavior | Reproduce with a smaller or clean setup, then update or isolate that software. |
| Several heavy apps keep pressure yellow or red; swap activity continues | Workload exceeds practical RAM capacity | Reduce simultaneous workloads or consider a Mac with more memory. |
| Pressure is elevated while the startup disk is nearly full | Insufficient room for swap operations may be contributing | Free or move data, then repeat the same test. |
| Normal work remains yellow or red after reducing workloads, and no single app is abnormal | Hardware capacity limitation | Check whether the Mac has upgradeable memory; otherwise plan around its fixed capacity. |
Check whether your Mac can accept more RAM
Do not assume that every Mac can be upgraded. Apple’s supported check is:
- Choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
- Open System Report… to launch System Information.
- Select Memory in the sidebar.
- Look for Upgradeable Memory.
If a Memory Slots pane does not appear, upgradeable memory is unavailable for that Mac. Models with soldered or unified memory cannot be expanded by installing a RAM kit. For an eligible Mac, use a model-specific memory specification and follow the manufacturer’s installation limits, or have a qualified service provider perform the upgrade. A kit that fits one Mac model is not evidence that it fits another.

When upgradeable memory is confirmed, compare the cost and risk of a compatible kit or service with the value of keeping the Mac. When it is not upgradeable, the practical choices are reducing concurrent workloads, replacing especially demanding software with lighter options where possible, or moving to a Mac configured with more memory.
Common diagnostic mistakes
Using free memory as the only metric
Free RAM can be low because macOS is using caches productively. Always pair it with Memory Pressure and the workload’s responsiveness.
Declaring a problem from one yellow spike
Launching an app, opening a large file, or completing an export can cause a short-lived spike. Record whether the color stays elevated during ordinary work.
Treating any Swap Used value as failure
Swap is a mechanism, not a universal error code. Persistent activity combined with pressure and delays is more meaningful than an isolated number.
Installing a cleaner before identifying the consumer
Purging caches can obscure the symptom and cannot increase physical capacity. Use Activity Monitor first, where App Memory and pressure are already visible.
Buying RAM without checking the Mac model
Confirm Upgradeable Memory and the Memory Slots pane before purchasing hardware. Non-upgradeable Macs require workload changes or a different machine.
A repeatable test plan
- Write down the exact apps, tabs, files, and background tools open when the slowdown occurs.
- Run that workload until the symptom appears, without changing several variables at once.
- Capture the Memory Pressure color, App Memory leaders, Compressed memory, and Swap Used.
- Quit the largest suspected process and wait long enough to see whether responsiveness changes.
- Reopen only the software needed for the task and test again.
- Free startup-disk space if capacity is tight, then repeat the test.
- Use System Information to check upgrade eligibility only after software and workload causes have been examined.
This sequence separates a temporary spike from a repeatable capacity problem and gives you evidence before changing software or buying hardware.
