Start with the browser’s download list, the save location, and your Mac’s available storage. A download may be paused, saved somewhere unexpected, blocked by the website, or stopped by a security warning—each calls for a different fix.
First identify what happened
Check the browser’s download list and note the exact symptom before changing settings. Is the transfer still running or paused? Did it finish but the file is missing? Is the file incomplete or unable to open? Did the browser show an error or security warning? These clues help separate a location problem from a transfer, storage, access, or safety issue.
- Paused or still in progress: check the download list and resume it if possible.
- Complete but missing: check the configured download destination and locate the file from the browser.
- Incomplete or damaged: retry the download from the original trusted source.
- Error or warning: use the message to identify a storage, permissions, network, server-access, or security issue.
Check Safari’s download list and save location
In Safari, click Show Downloads. If a transfer is paused, resume it. To find a completed file, click the magnifying-glass control beside its name. Safari may not locate it if it has been moved or the download location has changed.

To check or change the destination, go to Safari > Settings > General > File download location. If the download is incomplete or damaged, try again. Some links do not provide a downloadable file at all. Apple’s Safari download guide covers these controls and other download issues.

A file may have downloaded successfully but still need an app to open it. For example, an archive may need to be decompressed, and a disk image may need to be opened. Only open software you expected to download from a source you trust.
Use Chrome’s error message to narrow the cause
The following descriptions apply to Google Chrome; another browser may use different wording. Match Chrome’s message to the next action rather than repeatedly retrying without changing anything.

| Needs authorisation or Forbidden | The website or server controls access to the file. | Sign in if the site requires it, or contact the site owner. |
| Network error | The transfer could not complete over the current connection. | Check the connection and try again later. |

Work out whether the website, browser, or network is responsible
Test another download from a different website. If that works, the original site or file may be the issue. If practical, try the same download in another browser. When multiple browsers or devices fail on the same network, focus on the network or the website rather than repeatedly changing Safari settings.
For Safari problems limited to a particular site, test one cause at a time. Apple recommends trying a Private Window and temporarily disabling extensions. You can also check site data and relevant Privacy, Security, Websites, or Advanced settings. Remove stored data for the affected site only when testing suggests it is involved; this may sign you out of the site.
VPN or security software, iCloud Private Relay, and custom proxy or DNS settings can also affect access. Test changes selectively and restore settings that do not solve the problem. Apple advises comparing another browser or device on the same network when assessing whether custom proxy or DNS settings are involved. If the problem appears to involve Wi-Fi, check the connection, restart the Mac, verify date and time, and check for macOS updates when possible. A security warning is not simply a failed transfer. Chrome may block a file it considers dangerous, suspicious, unverified, or insecure. Google’s guidance is direct: “When Chrome blocks a download, you’re protected and don’t need to take further action.” Do not routinely disable browser protection or bypass a warning just to obtain a file.
If you believe a file was flagged in error, verify it with the publisher or get it from a trusted official source. Safari users should likewise avoid opening unexpected software or software from an untrusted source. Check Downloads folder access if saving is blocked
If an app cannot access the Downloads folder, macOS privacy controls may be involved. Review the app’s access in System Settings’ Privacy & Security controls rather than changing unrelated browser or security settings. Apple’s guide to allowing apps to access the Downloads folder explains the permission.
Handle macOS update and installer downloads separately
A failed macOS update or installer is different from an ordinary file downloaded through a browser. Begin by checking available storage and internet stability. If the problem persists, Apple’s recovery guidance may include installing from macOS Recovery, trying Safe Mode for an App Store or Software Update installation, or repairing the startup disk with Disk Utility. If an installer is reported damaged or unverifiable, Apple advises deleting it and downloading it again after repairing the disk.
Follow Apple’s instructions for the specific error rather than applying recovery or disk-repair procedures to a routine web download. Firmware revive or restore and erasing the Mac are high-impact escalations, not general download fixes. See Apple’s macOS update and installation troubleshooting.
