A Mac assistant runs “100% on-device” only if every part you mean to include—model inference, retrieval, speech processing, and tool use—runs on the Mac without sending data to a remote service. The phrase does not, by itself, establish what the assistant costs: that depends on whether you need new hardware, storage, paid software, or other additions. No verified purchase or operating-cost figures are available for the personal setup implied by this topic, so this guide explains how to define the boundary and account for the expense without inventing a bill.
What “100% on-device” actually means
“On-device” describes where work happens, not a guarantee attached to a product label. An assistant can run its language model locally while still using the internet for another feature. To make a defensible claim, identify which components are local and which, if any, communicate with external services.
- Model inference: Does the Mac generate answers, or are prompts sent to a hosted model?
- Retrieval: Are documents indexed and searched locally, or uploaded to an external service?
- Speech: Are speech recognition and voice generation performed on the Mac?
- Tools: Can the assistant read files and run commands locally? Does it also call web services or other APIs?
- Operational traffic: Do telemetry, updates, sign-in, or optional features make network requests?
These distinctions matter because “the model is local” is narrower than “the assistant is fully offline.” A local tool loop may still use a network-connected tool. If a strict no-network claim matters, verify the app’s behavior with network access disabled and state what was tested.

A useful way to understand the system is as three layers: the model runtime, a way to make the model available to the application, and the agent that decides what to do with each request. Apple Developer’s WWDC 2026 session describes one possible stack using MLX, MLX-LM for loading and quantizing models, an MLX-LM server, and an agent layer. It is an example architecture, not evidence that any particular assistant uses those components.

Model runtime
The runtime loads the model and performs inference on the Mac’s hardware. Apple describes MLX as an open-source array framework for experimenting with, training, and fine-tuning generative models on Apple silicon. MLX-LM is one option for working with language models in that ecosystem.
Model server or interface
An application needs a way to send prompts to the runtime and receive results. A local server or API can provide that interface. “Server” here need not mean a cloud service; it can be a process running on the same Mac. Confirm where it listens and whether the application is configured to use a remote endpoint.

Agent and tools
The agent handles the interaction around the model: it can select a tool, pass an instruction, inspect the result, and continue. Apple Developer describes a local agent loop in which a model calls tools to run commands, read files, and hit APIs, then observes results and iterates. The last example matters: an API call may leave the device even when the model and agent loop are local. Tool choice determines the data path.
Local inference is not the same as Apple Intelligence
Apple’s own Apple Intelligence combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s June 2026 announcement and its Private Cloud Compute Security Guide describe that system; it should not be treated as a promise that every request stays on the Mac or that all features work offline. A third-party assistant built to keep inference local is a different implementation, and its actual network behavior depends on its components and settings.

Apple’s 2025 technical report describes an approximately 3-billion-parameter on-device foundation model alongside a separate server model. That is context for Apple’s design, not a universal limit on the size of third-party models that a Mac can run.
What determines whether it is practical on your Mac
There is no reliable speed prediction from a single specification. Available memory, model architecture, quantization, context length, and the work being requested all affect results. An independent Mac Studio test published by Tom’s Hardware on July 30, 2026, found that model architecture and workload affected inference and cautioned that memory bandwidth alone did not predict delivered performance. Its findings apply to its tested hardware and models, not automatically to another Mac.

Apple Machine Learning Research reported that cache sharing reduced KV-cache memory use by 37.5% in the specific model design described in its 2025 update. That is an architecture-specific memory result—not a general reduction in memory use or a promise of a speed increase for local assistants.

How to account for the cost honestly
There is no substantiated personal total for the setup implied by the original first-person framing. A responsible cost account separates new spending from hardware or subscriptions already owned, and separates one-time purchases from recurring charges. Use actual receipts and measured usage rather than a generic estimate.
| Cost area | What to record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Mac | Exact configuration, purchase price and date, and whether it was bought for this project or already owned | Separate project-attributable new spending from the cost of an existing computer. |
| Models and storage | Model names, versions, quantization, download sizes, and any external drive purchased | Downloaded model files use storage; record any additional storage bought specifically for them. |
| Software and services | Runtime or application charges, subscriptions, and any services used by tools | Distinguish one-time charges from recurring costs and identify features that rely on a remote service. |
| Operating use | Electricity only if it was actually measured, with the measurement period and method | Do not present an unmeasured estimate as a personal operating cost. |
This accounting also clarifies what “local-first cost” means. A Mac that was already owned may make the additional cash outlay small, while a purpose-bought machine changes the picture substantially. Neither scenario can be assumed without the owner’s records.
What to disclose in a first-person account
A useful personal report should give readers enough detail to reproduce the setup and judge the claim. State the exact Mac configuration; model names, versions, quantization, and storage needs; runtime and assistant components; any external drive or accessories; paid services; and which functions still need the internet. Include representative tasks and measured latency or quality observations only if they were actually recorded, with the workload and conditions attached. If claiming zero cloud use, explain which network-dependent features were checked and how.
