Selecteer de app in Finder en druk op Command-I. Kijk in het venster ‘Toon info’ naar Soort (in sommige macOS-versies: Kind): daar staat of de app Intel, Universal of Apple silicon is. Op Apple silicon kan een Intel-app Rosetta nodig hebben; Universal-apps zijn geschikt voor zowel Intel- als Apple silicon-Macs.
Een afzonderlijke Mac-app controleren in Finder
- Open Finder en zoek de app, meestal in de map Programma’s.
- Selecteer de app.
- Kies Archief/Bestand > Toon info of druk op Command-I.
- Zoek in het infovenster het veld Soort of Kind en lees de classificatie.
De benamingen kunnen in het Engels worden weergegeven als Application (Intel), Application (Universal) en Application (Apple silicon). Apple beschrijft deze labels in zijn instructies voor Intel-apps op een Mac met Apple silicon.
Wat betekenen Intel, Universal en Apple silicon?

Een overzicht van Intel-apps in Systeeminstellingen
Apple noemt voor macOS 27 of later ook een overzicht van Intel-apps. Open het Apple-menu en kies Systeeminstellingen > Algemeen > Info. Klik bij Intel-based Apps op Details. De lijst toont recent gebruikte apps of apps op gangbare installatielocaties. Zie deze daarom als een handig overzicht, niet als een gegarandeerde inventaris van elke app op de schijf.
Wanneer is Rosetta nodig en hoe installeer je het?
Rosetta vertaalt Intel-apps op Apple silicon op de achtergrond. Als je een Intel-app voor het eerst opent en Rosetta nodig is, kan macOS aanbieden het te installeren. Apple vermeldt ook deze Terminal-opdracht:

softwareupdate --install-rosetta
Rosetta is geen app waarmee je handmatig werkt. Volgens Apple is Rosetta beschikbaar op Apple silicon-Macs met macOS 27 of eerder. Vanaf macOS 28 is de functionaliteit volgens Apple beperkt tot bepaalde oudere, niet-onderhouden games die Intel-frameworks gebruiken. Controleer Apples actuele uitleg en de macOS-versie op je Mac voordat je ervan uitgaat dat een Intel-app nog werkt. Zie Apple Support: Using Intel-based apps on a Mac with Apple silicon.
Waarom staat ‘Open using Rosetta’ bij een Universal-app?
Een Universal-app bevat ondersteuning voor zowel Intel als Apple silicon, maar kan toch de optie Open using Rosetta tonen in het Info-venster. Daarmee kun je de app geforceerd in Intel-modus starten, bijvoorbeeld als een plug-in, extensie of andere add-on nog alleen Intel ondersteunt. De optie betekent dus niet dat de app zelf alleen Intel is. Schakel haar weer uit zodra de add-on voor Apple silicon is bijgewerkt.

Controleer ook plug-ins en andere add-ons
De classificatie van de hoofdapp vertelt niet vanzelf of alle onderdelen die je ermee gebruikt geschikt zijn voor Apple silicon. Plug-ins, extensies, updaters en andere add-ons kunnen afzonderlijk Intel-gebaseerd zijn en een eigen update nodig hebben. Als een Universal-app met een add-on niet goed werkt, controleer dan de architectuurvereisten van dat onderdeel en kijk bij de ontwikkelaar of er een bijgewerkte versie beschikbaar is.

Wat te doen als een app Intel blijkt te zijn
- Controleer in de App Store, de ingebouwde updater van de app of op de website van de ontwikkelaar of een Universal- of Apple silicon-versie beschikbaar is.
- Werk zo nodig ook plug-ins en andere add-ons bij; die worden mogelijk afzonderlijk bijgewerkt.
- Is niet duidelijk of een update bestaat of wanneer die komt, vraag het dan aan de ontwikkelaar.
- Als de app afhankelijk is van Rosetta, houd rekening met Apples genoemde versiegrens en controleer de actuele macOS-ondersteuning.
