Most Mac users do not automatically need a separate antivirus app. macOS already includes XProtect, Gatekeeper and notarisation, which help detect, block and remove malware. Those protections reduce risk; they do not guarantee that every new or unknown threat will be caught. Keep macOS security features current, be cautious with unfamiliar downloads and treat third-party protection as an optional choice based on your needs.
What protection comes with macOS?
Apple describes Mac security as a set of layers, not a single antivirus program. The main malware-related protections include:
- XProtect: Apple’s built-in antivirus technology, which uses automatically updated YARA signatures to detect known malware.
- Gatekeeper: A check applied to apps, plug-ins and installer packages downloaded from outside the App Store. It checks developer identity, notarisation and whether software appears to have been altered.
- Notarisation: Apple scans software submitted by developers for known malicious content. Apple can revoke a notarisation ticket if an app is later found to be malicious.
Apple also documents protections such as mandatory code signing and System Integrity Protection. Together, these mechanisms make the claim that Macs cannot get malware inaccurate. Their purpose is to reduce risk, not to promise perfect safety.
How XProtect detects and handles malware
Apple says XProtect checks apps when they are first launched, when an app changes in the file system, and when XProtect signatures are updated. It can block known malware and may move a detected item to the Bin and alert the user. Apple also describes an XProtect remediation engine.

These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that XProtect will identify every threat. Signature-based detection is aimed at known malicious software; the available Apple documentation does not establish that every new or unknown threat will be caught.
What Gatekeeper and notarisation check
When you download software from outside the App Store, Gatekeeper checks whether it comes from an identified developer, has been notarised and appears unaltered. Notarisation means Apple scanned the submitted software for known malicious content; it is a risk-reduction step, not a certification that an app is harmless in every respect.

Users can override Gatekeeper policies. That flexibility can be useful in legitimate cases, but dismissing a security warning without understanding the app’s source and the reason for the warning removes a layer of protection.
When might another security app be useful?
A third-party security tool is a personal choice, not a requirement established for every Mac owner by Apple’s documentation. One possible use case is additional monitoring: Apple documents that, on macOS 15 or later, third-party security developers can receive certain Gatekeeper-bypass and XProtect-detection events through the Endpoint Security API. That shows a possible monitoring capability, not proof that every consumer needs another app.

If you are considering a product, assess what it actually detects and can remediate, whether it supports your current macOS version, how it handles data, its effect on system performance and its total price. Apple’s documentation does not rank products or establish which paid option performs best.
Practical steps for staying safer on a Mac
- Keep macOS current. Install available system and security updates so the protections Apple documents can receive updates.
- Check unfamiliar downloads before opening them. Consider the source and whether you expected the app or installer. A familiar-looking name alone does not establish that a download is trustworthy.
- Pay attention to security prompts. Do not override Gatekeeper unless you understand where the software came from and why you need to proceed.
- Choose extra protection for a specific reason. If you want a third-party tool, check its compatibility, detection and remediation scope, privacy practices, system impact and full cost rather than assuming any antivirus app provides the same benefits.
What Apple’s documentation does—and does not—show
Apple’s App security overview, published 28 January 2026, describes the security layers built into macOS. Apple’s malware-protection and Gatekeeper documentation explains how those controls are intended to work. These sources are useful for understanding Apple’s stated capabilities, but they do not provide an independent comparison of antivirus products, a detection-rate test, a malware-prevalence statistic for deciding an individual’s risk, or a universal recommendation to buy third-party software.
