The M6 Mac mini pairs a substantial CPU and graphics upgrade with a 256GB base SSD that cannot be expanded internally. It is compelling if you want a compact desktop and can plan around that fixed capacity; buyers who keep large projects or media libraries locally should price a larger internal tier before ordering. AppleInsider listed a U.S. starting price of $899 in its October 2, 2026 review, but prices and discounts can change.
What you get with the M6 Mac mini
Apple’s 2026 specifications give the M6 a 12-core CPU—two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores—a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Unified memory starts at 16GB, with 24GB and 32GB options. The internal SSD starts at 256GB, with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations. Connectivity is unusually flexible for a compact desktop: three Thunderbolt 4 ports, two front USB-C ports, HDMI, 2.5Gb Ethernet configurable to 10Gb, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Apple specifies support for up to three external displays. These are M6 ports; the separate M5 Pro configuration uses Thunderbolt 5.
How fast is it?
Independent review results point to strong performance, but they are not directly interchangeable because the publications used different benchmark versions and test setups.

- AppleInsider’s review unit scored 4,034 single-core and 22,594 multi-core in Geekbench 7, and 91,087 in Metal. In that publication’s M4 comparison, results were 3,277 single-core and 15,337 multi-core.
- Tom’s Guide reported 4,708 single-core and 21,405 multi-core in a separate Geekbench 6.7 run. Its 512GB review unit copied a 25GB file at 6,371.5 MB/s.
Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement claims up to 40% faster CPU performance, up to 2x faster graphics and storage, and up to 4x faster AI performance against specified M4 comparison systems. It also cites task-specific gains: up to 13.5x faster LLM prompt processing than M1 and 4.8x faster than M4 in LM Studio, up to 2.3x faster Excel calculations than M1 and 1.5x faster than M4, and up to 2x faster ray-traced gaming in Cyberpunk 2077 than M4. These are Apple’s comparisons, not independent test results; the “up to” figures depend on the stated task and comparison system. Details are in Apple’s announcement.
Why the 256GB SSD is the main drawback
Capacity is the obvious constraint: 256GB must accommodate macOS, applications and the files you want available locally. More importantly, MacRumors reports that the NAND is soldered to the logic board and that aftermarket internal SSD upgrades are not supported. The storage choice is therefore effectively permanent; external storage is the practical way to add space after purchase.

The cited storage measurements also show a speed difference between the 256GB and 512GB configurations. MacRumors summarizes Blackmagic Disk Speed Test results as follows; these are reported measurements, not a guarantee for every Mac or workload.

MacRumors notes that many everyday users may not notice the speed difference, while power users may care. That does not make capacity irrelevant: a fast drive still cannot hold more than it holds, and an external drive adds space without changing the internal SSD.

Which storage configuration should you choose?
Start with the files and applications you expect to keep on the Mac itself, then compare Apple’s current checkout price for the capacity you need with the cost and inconvenience of using an external drive. AppleInsider’s October 2 review quoted an additional $200 for 512GB and $500 for 1TB at that time; those are review-date figures, not a current price guarantee. The review’s recommendation of at least 512GB reflects that reviewer’s anticipated needs, not a universal minimum.

External storage is a sensible budget-conscious expansion route if your workflow tolerates it. It can hold files and projects, but you will need to keep the drive available when working with them. For frequently used large projects, the convenience of internal capacity may justify paying more at checkout.

Remember memory and workload, not just storage
Unified memory is also configured at purchase: the M6 starts at 16GB and can be ordered with 24GB or 32GB. Consider the applications and workloads you intend to run, alongside storage needs, before choosing a configuration. An external SSD can add file space; it does not change the amount of unified memory.

The M5 Pro Mac mini is a distinct option for more demanding professional workloads, with a different chip tier and Thunderbolt 5. It should be considered on its own workload and price merits rather than treated as a direct substitute for the M6.

Verdict: strong desktop, awkward entry configuration
The M6 Mac mini’s hardware and port selection make it a capable compact desktop, and independent review benchmarks are strong in their respective tests. The purchase decision turns on whether 256GB is enough for your local workflow and whether you are comfortable relying on external storage. If you need substantial local capacity, compare the live internal upgrade price against the cost and day-to-day friction of an external drive before choosing the base model.
