For most photographers and video editors, the M5 Max Mac Studio is the better buy; the M5 Ultra is aimed at a much smaller group whose demanding, GPU-heavy work can use its extra performance. PetaPixel’s October 5, 2026 review describes the Ultra as taking over the high-end professional-desktop role once associated with the Mac Pro. That is the reviewer’s analogy, not Apple’s claim that the two machines are equivalent.
Is the M5 Ultra Mac Studio worth its price?
It can be, but only if your work benefits from the performance headroom. Apple’s U.S. starting price for the M5 Ultra Mac Studio is $5,499, while PetaPixel says its review configuration—with a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU, 256GB of unified memory, and a 4TB SSD—cost $12,300. The review’s test machine is not the base model, so those figures describe very different configurations.
Apple said the M5 Ultra could be configured with up to 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth. PetaPixel reported that a 512GB option would become available in late October 2026 and cost $6,000 more than its described 256GB configuration. The publication cautioned that ordinary Adobe and DaVinci Resolve editing is not, by itself, a reason to pay that premium: more memory is useful when a workload actually runs short of it. Apple positions the expanded memory ceiling in part for local AI workloads.
For the performance figures and recommendations below, PetaPixel’s results are the publication’s benchmarks, not our testing or Apple’s. Its review used Puget Systems workflows for Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve. The results reflect that test set, not every project, codec, software version, or editing workflow.

How does M5 Ultra compare with M5 Max?
The practical choice is whether the Ultra’s additional capability matters to your actual workload. Apple’s 2026 U.S. starting prices put the M5 Ultra more than twice as high as the M5 Max, before configuration differences.
| Mac Studio | Apple U.S. starting price (2026) | Best fit according to PetaPixel’s review |
|---|---|---|
| M5 Max | $2,499 | Most photographers and video editors |
| M5 Ultra | $5,499 | A small minority with demanding work that can use the extra performance, especially heavy video workflows |
Those are starting prices, not like-for-like configured-system prices. Check Apple’s current regional pricing and configuration options before ordering; prices and availability can change.

Where PetaPixel saw the clearest gains
PetaPixel reported particularly strong M5 Ultra results in Lightroom Classic, Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve. In its Lightroom comparison, the reviewer said the M5 Ultra was 22% faster than the M3 Ultra among the machines the publication had tested. Treat that as one result from its stated test set, not a general speed guarantee.
The difference was much smaller in Photoshop: the review found the M5 Ultra only marginally ahead of the M5 Max, attributing that outcome to the workflow’s greater reliance on the CPU. PetaPixel also noted that its DaVinci Resolve comparison set was smaller because Puget Systems had recently changed that benchmark. Its comparisons were against previously tested systems, not necessarily a matched group running identical current software versions.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose M5 Max if your photo or video work is well served by a high-end desktop and you do not have a specific workload that benefits from the Ultra’s extra performance. This is PetaPixel’s recommendation for most editors.
- Consider M5 Ultra if demanding paid work—particularly heavy video production or GPU-intensive tasks—can make productive use of its additional performance. The review reserves it for a small minority of users.
- Do not buy 512GB simply because it is the maximum. First establish that your real workload is memory constrained; PetaPixel advises that doubling memory is not a general-purpose editing upgrade.
What does the M5 Ultra Mac Studio offer?
Apple announced the M5 Ultra Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, with availability beginning September 22. Apple lists configurations of up to a 36-core CPU and 80-core GPU, as well as up to 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth. The company also announced Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thunderbolt 5. Apple’s claim that M5 Ultra delivers up to 4.3 times the peak AI compute performance of M3 Ultra comes from Apple’s own testing, which it said was conducted in July 2026.
PetaPixel describes the Ultra configuration as having six Thunderbolt 5 ports—four at the rear and two at the front—along with 10Gb Ethernet, USB-A, HDMI 2.1, a headphone jack, and an SD card reader. Its review also discusses an external SSD RAID array in the context of video work; that is a workflow detail, not a universal storage recommendation.

Is the Mac Pro dead?
PetaPixel reports that Apple discontinued the Mac Pro in March 2026 and argues that the Ultra Mac Studio has effectively inherited its high-end professional-desktop role. Apple’s product announcement establishes the M5 Ultra Mac Studio’s specifications, but it does not itself establish the Mac Pro discontinuation. The discontinuation claim should therefore be understood as PetaPixel’s reporting.

The Mac Studio is a compact desktop with Thunderbolt 5 and can connect to expansion chassis, but the available product details do not establish that it has the Mac Pro’s same internal expansion architecture. PetaPixel also notes that the 2023 Mac Pro used the same M2 Ultra chip as the Mac Studio of that generation.

What is the best Mac for video editing?
For most editors, PetaPixel’s conclusion points to the M5 Max Mac Studio, which starts at $2,499 in the U.S. according to Apple’s 2026 pricing. The M5 Ultra’s $5,499 U.S. starting price is easier to justify when your workload can use its higher performance and the time saved has real value. A demanding professional workflow may make that trade worthwhile; a Photoshop workflow like the one in PetaPixel’s tests showed only a marginal advantage over M5 Max.
PetaPixel discusses the M3 Ultra Mac Studio and custom PC builds as alternatives, but describes M3 Ultra availability as difficult and says directly matching a PC build on cost and performance is hard. Those are the reviewer’s assessments, not a definitive current market comparison. Check current availability and pricing if you are considering either route.
