M30 and M15 are both ancient globular clusters in the Milky Way, but the best-documented contrast is not a simple age ranking. M30 (NGC 7099) has published estimates for its distance, age and metallicity, while NASA’s Hubble material on M15 (NGC 7078) emphasizes an exceptionally compact center that appears to have passed through core collapse and begun expanding.
M30 is also closer in the cited measurements: an isochrone fit places it at 8.29 kiloparsecs, compared with about 10 kiloparsecs for M15. The measurements come from different studies and methods, so the comparison is most reliable when each cluster’s evidence is kept in context.
What is the difference between M30 and M15?
M30 and M15 belong to the same broad class of object: globular clusters, dense, gravitationally bound groups containing very old stars. Both orbit within the Milky Way. Their catalog identities are M30, also known as NGC 7099, and M15, also known as NGC 7078.
The cited measurements point to three practical differences:

- M30 is closer to Earth in the cited distance estimates.
- M30 has independently reported age and metallicity values from modern photometric studies.
- M15 has the more prominently documented extreme central concentration, with Hubble observations interpreted as evidence of a post-core-collapse state.
Those points do not establish that M30 and M15 differ in age, chemical composition or total mass. Comparable values for every property were not verified from the same survey or method.

The table combines results from separate publications. It is therefore a map of the available evidence, not a same-instrument ranking.
Are M30 and M15 both globular clusters?
Yes. A globular cluster is a compact, self-gravitating stellar system whose members remain associated over very long timescales. The stars interact gravitationally, and those interactions gradually alter the cluster’s internal structure. Dense centers, mass segregation and changes in the distribution of stellar remnants are natural consequences of that evolution.
M30 is identified as a Galactic globular cluster in the cited time-series photometry work. NASA identifies M15 as a Milky Way globular cluster located in the constellation Pegasus. The two objects are therefore comparable in category even though the evidence assembled for them is not symmetrical.
What do the names M30, NGC 7099, M15 and NGC 7078 mean?
M30 and M15 are Messier-catalog numbers, while NGC 7099 and NGC 7078 are entries in the New General Catalogue. The paired names refer to the same objects, not to separate clusters or separate components. Using both designations once is useful because astronomical databases, observing guides and research papers may prefer one catalog system over the other.
The catalog names also prevent a common comparison error: M30 is not being compared with another object called NGC 7099, and M15 is not a second cluster distinct from NGC 7078. Every distance, age or structural statement should be attached to the correct catalog identity.
Which is closer, M30 or M15?
M30 is closer according to the cited estimates. The 2024 isochrone fit gives M30 a distance of 8.29 ± 0.03 ± 0.27 kpc. The first uncertainty is statistical, while the second represents the quoted systematic uncertainty. Earlier variable-star analyses placed M30 at 8.1, 8.32 ± 0.20, and 8.35 ± 0.42 kpc, depending on the method used.

Using the approximate conversion of 1 kpc to 3,260 light-years, the 8.29 kpc M30 estimate corresponds to roughly 27,000 light-years. That places M30 approximately 1.7 kpc, or about 5,500 light-years, nearer than M15 in these cited measurements.
The conclusion is about relative distance, not measurement precision. M30’s values come from isochrone fitting and variable-star work, whereas the M15 figure is the rounded value presented by NASA. A modern, same-method remeasurement of both clusters would be the cleanest basis for a formal distance comparison.
How old is M30?
The 2024 isochrone study estimates M30’s age at 12.80 ± 0.17 billion years, with an additional systematic uncertainty of 0.8 billion years. A 2013 variable-star study gave an estimate of 13 ± 1 billion years.

An isochrone fit compares the observed positions of a cluster’s stars on a color–magnitude diagram with theoretical stellar-evolution tracks. The statistical error describes the precision of that fit under the study’s assumptions; the systematic term reflects broader model and calibration uncertainties. The two M30 estimates are consistent with one another at the level implied by their uncertainties.

These numbers support describing M30 as an ancient cluster. They do not justify saying that M30 is older or younger than M15, because the cited M15 material does not provide a directly comparable age estimate.
What is M30’s metallicity?
The 2024 study reports M30’s iron abundance as [Fe/H] = −2.07 ± 0.04 dex, with 0.1 dex of systematic uncertainty. In this notation, the Sun is the reference point: a negative value means that the cluster’s stars contain less iron per unit hydrogen than the Sun.
The earlier 2013 analysis reported two values on different scales, −2.01 ± 0.04 dex and −2.11 ± 0.06 dex. The difference illustrates why metallicity values should be quoted with their calibration scale and uncertainty rather than treated as immutable labels.
No equivalent M15 metallicity value is established by the cited NASA pages. Consequently, the available material supports a chemical description of M30, but not a defensible statement that M30 is more or less metal-poor than M15.
How should M30’s uncertainties be read?
The notation 8.29 ± 0.03 ± 0.27 kpc contains two error budgets, not one combined promise of precision. The smaller first term is the statistical uncertainty from the fit; the larger second term is the quoted systematic uncertainty. In practical terms, the central value is useful for comparison, but the systematic term warns that assumptions about models, calibration or inputs can shift the result.
The same distinction applies to the age and iron abundance. M30’s 12.80 ± 0.17 Gyr age has a 0.8 Gyr systematic uncertainty, and [Fe/H] = −2.07 ± 0.04 dex has a 0.1 dex systematic uncertainty. Reporting only the smallest error would make the measurements look more exact than the study intends.
Why is M15’s center so important?
M15 is notable for its extremely compact central region. NASA’s Hubble account describes a core only about 0.8 light-years across containing nearly 7,000 stars. That concentration makes the center a laboratory for studying stellar encounters, mass segregation and the late stages of globular-cluster evolution.
In a cluster, gravitational encounters redistribute energy. More massive stars tend to lose kinetic energy and migrate inward, while lighter stars move outward. As the heavier population accumulates near the center, the central density can rise and the core can contract. This process is commonly called core collapse.
Core collapse does not mean that the whole cluster disappears into a singular point. It describes a phase in the cluster’s dynamical evolution in which the central density rises sharply relative to the surrounding regions. The core can later expand when energy released by close binary interactions counteracts further contraction.

NASA’s Hubble material interprets M15 as having passed through its most compact phase and as being well along in the resulting expansion. That is the strongest qualitative distinction between the two objects in the cited evidence: M15 has a directly described, unusually dense and evolving core.
What does “core collapse” mean in a globular cluster?
1. Gravitational encounters drive mass segregation
Stars in a globular cluster do not orbit in complete isolation. Repeated encounters gradually exchange energy and momentum. Massive stars tend to sink toward the center, while lower-mass stars are preferentially moved to larger radii.
2. The central density increases
As massive stars accumulate inward, the core becomes denser and its characteristic radius shrinks. The cluster’s outer envelope can remain extended even while the central region becomes extraordinarily crowded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Binary stars can reverse the contraction
Close binary systems act as energy sources. Encounters with other stars can harden a binary and transfer orbital energy to the surrounding population. That heating can halt contraction and drive a later expansion of the core.
4. Observers infer the phase from structure and motion
A claim of core collapse is therefore an interpretation based on density profiles, stellar distributions and dynamical models. It is not simply a photograph showing a literal collapse. For M15, Hubble observations and the resulting density interpretation support a post-collapse expansion scenario.
How does M30’s dynamical evidence compare with M15’s?
M30 appears in Family III in a 2012 study that used the distribution of blue-straggler stars to classify dynamical age. The same supplementary table lists M30’s concentration parameter as c = 2.29 and its core radius as 4.3 arcseconds.
Blue stragglers are unusually hot or luminous stars that appear younger than the main population in a cluster’s color–magnitude diagram. Their radial distribution can retain information about how strongly a cluster’s stars have dynamically mixed. A Family III classification is evidence about that dynamical evolution, but it is not identical to the Hubble density-profile interpretation used for M15.
The angular core radius also needs context: 4.3 arcseconds is an apparent size on the sky, not a light-year measurement by itself. Converting it to a physical radius requires a distance and the assumptions of the structural model. It should therefore not be placed directly beside M15’s 0.8-light-year core as though the two numbers came from the same measurement.
Accordingly, it would be inaccurate to write that M30 and M15 have been assigned the same core-collapse measurement. The careful comparison is that M15 has a documented, extremely dense center interpreted as post-collapse and expanding, while M30 has a separate dynamical-age classification based on blue-straggler distributions and measured structural parameters.
Does M15 contain a confirmed central black hole?
The cited evidence does not establish that conclusion. A 1995 Hubble density-profile study found that M15’s measured central profile was compatible with either core-collapse models or a model containing a massive central black hole. NASA’s later page includes black-hole-related metadata, but that does not turn the alternative model into a confirmed detection.

The distinction matters because a sharply concentrated stellar profile can be produced by more than one physical scenario. A black-hole interpretation requires evidence that separates those models, such as consistent stellar motions or other diagnostics beyond the density profile alone. The sources used here support describing the central interpretation as model-dependent.

What does the quoted M15 mass mean?
NASA’s object-page metadata lists M15 at about 600,000 solar masses. That figure gives a sense of the cluster’s scale, but it is not a matched mass comparison with M30. No M30 mass estimate was established in the same evidence set, and the two values would need compatible assumptions and methods before one could be called more massive.
A cluster mass is also different from a core-density measurement. M15 can have a very compact center while its total mass includes stars spread through a much larger halo. Central concentration, core radius and total mass describe related but distinct properties.
What can be compared directly, and what cannot?
Directly supported comparisons
- Both objects are ancient Milky Way globular clusters.
- M30 is closer in the cited distance estimates.
- M15 has the more explicitly documented ultra-dense core and post-collapse expansion interpretation.
- M30’s published studies provide age, metallicity and distance estimates.
Comparisons that require caution
- M30’s age cannot be ranked against M15’s because no comparable M15 age is supplied by the cited source.
- M30’s [Fe/H] value cannot be used to claim a metallicity difference without a matched M15 measurement on a compatible scale.
- M15’s listed mass of 600,000 solar masses is not a matched mass comparison because an M30 mass value was not established in the same evidence set.
- M30’s Family III dynamical classification should not be treated as the same diagnostic as M15’s Hubble core-collapse analysis.
- M30’s 4.3-arcsecond core radius should not be compared numerically with M15’s 0.8-light-year core without converting both measurements under compatible distance and model assumptions.
How have the interpretations developed over time?
The dates help separate measurements from later interpretations. A 1990 NASA Hubble account described M15’s tiny core and its population of nearly 7,000 stars. A 1995 density-profile study kept both core-collapse and massive-black-hole models in play. NASA’s Hubble release page, dated 2002, presented M15 as having passed maximum collapse and entering expansion.
For M30, a 2012 blue-straggler study supplied the Family III dynamical-age classification and the structural values c = 2.29 and 4.3 arcseconds. A 2013 time-series photometry study reported its variable-star distances, age and alternative metallicity-scale values. A 2024 isochrone analysis then provided the 12.80 Gyr age, [Fe/H] = −2.07 dex and 8.29 kpc distance with explicit statistical and systematic uncertainties.

This sequence is why the comparison should not be presented as though one modern survey measured every property of both clusters. The M15 statements emphasize Hubble structural evidence and its interpretation; the M30 statements emphasize photometric parameter fits and a separate dynamical indicator.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do the studies use different numbers and methods?
Globular-cluster parameters depend on how they are measured. Distance can be inferred from variable stars or from fitting theoretical isochrones to a color–magnitude diagram. Age and metallicity depend on stellar models, photometric calibration, adopted chemical scales and the treatment of systematic errors. Dynamical state can be inferred from density profiles, core radii, concentration parameters or the spatial distribution of particular stellar populations.
Those methods answer related but different questions. A variable-star distance is not interchangeable with an isochrone distance simply because both are expressed in kiloparsecs. Likewise, a structural concentration parameter does not by itself prove the same evolutionary phase inferred from a Hubble density profile.
What is the practical takeaway?
If the question is which cluster is closer, the answer is M30: the cited estimates put it around 8.1–8.35 kpc, while M15 is listed at about 10 kpc.

If the question is which cluster is older or more metal-poor, the evidence here is incomplete for a fair ranking. M30 has measured estimates—about 12.8–13 billion years old and [Fe/H] near −2.07 dex—but the cited M15 material does not provide equivalent age and metallicity values.
The most accurate overall picture is therefore not “M30 versus M15, winner and loser.” They are two ancient Galactic globular clusters studied through different observational windows. M30 stands out in the cited work for its independently measured distance, age and chemical abundance; M15 stands out for its extraordinarily dense, dynamically evolving core.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are M30 and M15 the same kind of object?
Yes. Both are ancient, gravitationally bound globular clusters in the Milky Way. M30 is NGC 7099; M15 is NGC 7078.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which is closer to Earth, M30 or M15?
M30. The cited M30 estimates are about 8.1–8.35 kpc, including 8.29 kpc in a 2024 isochrone fit. NASA lists M15 at about 10 kpc, or 32,600 light-years.
Is M30 older than M15?
The available figures do not support that ranking. M30 has estimates near 12.8–13 billion years, but no directly comparable M15 age is provided here.
Which cluster is more metal-poor?
A fair comparison cannot be made from these sources. M30’s [Fe/H] is about −2.07 dex, with stated uncertainties, but an equivalent M15 value is not established.
What does core collapse mean for M15?
It describes a dynamical phase in which mass segregation raises the central density and contracts the core. Binary interactions can then supply energy, and NASA interprets M15 as expanding after its most compact phase.

No. The cited density profile is compatible with either core-collapse models or a massive-black-hole model. That evidence alone does not confirm a black hole.
Can M30’s Family III label be treated as proof that it is post-core-collapse like M15?
No. Family III comes from the radial distribution of blue stragglers, whereas M15’s interpretation comes from Hubble density-profile evidence. They are related dynamical clues, not identical measurements.
What is the main observational contrast?
M30 is characterized here by measured distance, age and metallicity estimates and a blue-straggler dynamical classification. M15 is characterized by an exceptionally dense, evolving center and a post-collapse expansion interpretation.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: M30 (NGC 7099) is closer in the cited measurements, at roughly 8.1–8.35 kpc, and has published age and metallicity estimates. M15 (NGC 7078), in Pegasus, is distinguished by a core about 0.8 light-years across with nearly 7,000 stars and evidence interpreted as post-core-collapse expansion. The clusters should not be ranked by age, metallicity or mass without matched measurements using the same methods.
