To identify an M.2 slot, first locate the exact computer or motherboard model, then check its official manual or specifications for the connector’s purpose, interface, and supported card sizes. An M.2-shaped socket alone does not prove that it accepts an SSD—or that it supports SATA or PCIe/NVMe.
How to check whether your computer has an M.2 slot
- Find the exact model. For a laptop or prebuilt desktop, note the full system model and, if available, its configuration or hardware revision. For a custom desktop, find the motherboard model and revision printed on the board. Specifications can vary between models and revisions.
- Open the manufacturer’s manual or specifications page. Search the document for “M.2,” “SSD,” “storage,” “NGFF,” “Key M,” or “Key E.” Check the board-layout diagram and the storage, service, or upgrade sections. Manufacturer documentation can identify where the connector is and what it supports. MSI, for example, advises notebook owners to check storage specifications by model: MSI Support: How to check storage specification?
- Inspect the hardware only if documentation does not settle the question and access is safe. Shut the computer down and disconnect power before opening a user-serviceable system. An M.2 socket is a compact edge connector, often near one or more screw or standoff positions where a slim card would lie flat. Do not force a card into a connector or open a sealed device; use the service manual or a qualified technician if access is uncertain.
- Confirm the connector’s function in the documentation. A laptop can have an M.2 socket for Wi-Fi or cellular networking rather than storage, and some computers use soldered storage or other connectors. Location and appearance are not enough to establish what a connector does.
- Check the complete compatibility details before buying a module. Verify function, interface, keying, supported length, and any slot-specific restrictions in the documentation for that exact system.
For a specific example of why the manual matters, an ASUS R1606I-IM-B manual identifies an M.2 M-Key connector and lists support for 2242, 2260, and 2280 devices. Those details apply to that board, not to every M.2 slot.
Does an M.2 slot support NVMe or SATA?
M.2 describes a module and connector form factor, not a storage protocol. Depending on the system, an M.2 slot may support SATA, PCIe/NVMe, both, or a non-storage module. Check the exact model’s manual for wording such as “SATA,” “PCIe,” “NVMe,” “WLAN,” or “WWAN.” If it lists only one interface, do not assume the other is supported.
Keying—the notch pattern on a module’s contact edge and the matching socket—can narrow down what may physically fit, but it is not proof of electrical compatibility. M-Key is common on PCIe/NVMe SSDs, while many SATA SSDs use B+M keying; implementations vary, and a socket may be wired for only one interface. A card that fits can still fail to work if its interface is unsupported. SanDisk explains the difference between M.2 as a form factor and SATA or NVMe as interfaces in its NVMe and SATA SSD overview; Dell also summarizes M.2 keys, sizes, and buses in its M.2 cards and slots guide.

What the key and card size can tell you
Keying is a clue, not a compatibility guarantee
Keys are notches in the module’s gold-contact edge. They help distinguish card types and limit which modules can physically enter a socket, but the notch pattern does not reveal every electrical connection or feature. Never conclude that a slot supports NVMe or SATA from a one-notch or two-notch appearance alone.
M.2 sockets also serve different functions. A Supermicro A4SAN manual, for example, describes M-Key, B-Key, and E-Key sockets with different supported functions, interfaces, and sizes. This is a model-specific illustration, not a universal mapping for every machine.

Read the module-length code
M.2 size codes commonly use four or five digits: the first two give the nominal width in millimeters, and the remaining digits give the length. Common examples include 2230 (22 × 30 mm), 2242 (22 × 42 mm), 2260 (22 × 60 mm), 2280 (22 × 80 mm), and 22110 (22 × 110 mm). SanDisk lists common M.2 lengths of 30, 42, 60, 80, and 110 mm in its M.2 form-factor guide.

Compare slots using the specifications that matter
If a computer has multiple M.2 connectors, check each one separately. A label such as “M.2” does not mean the slots have identical wiring, function, or limits.

Before you order an M.2 SSD
- Confirm the slot is a storage connector, not a wireless or cellular module socket.
- Verify that the SSD’s interface—SATA or PCIe/NVMe—is supported by that particular slot.
- Match the card’s keying and length to the manufacturer’s compatibility information.
- Check for slot-specific restrictions or shared connections described in the manual.
- Do not treat physical fit as proof that the SSD will work.
