Reliability ratings and long-term survival rates answer different questions. A reliability or dependability rating usually counts problems owners reported, or predicts problems for a defined model cohort over a stated period. A survival estimate measures the modeled likelihood that vehicles reach a mileage milestone such as 200,000 or 250,000 miles. A luxury car can rank well for short-term dependability without that rank being a direct estimate of its chance of reaching 200,000 miles—and a strong survival estimate does not guarantee that a particular used example is trouble-free.
To interpret either number, identify the outcome, cohort, time horizon, denominator, mileage threshold, model-year coverage and methodology. The examples below show why a three-year problem count from J.D. Power and a 250,000-mile probability from iSeeCars should never be read as if they were interchangeable statistics.
What a reliability rating actually measures
A reliability rating is a measure of problems, defects or owner-reported trouble within a defined observation window. Depending on the publisher, it may be a survey result, a prediction based on recent model history, or a composite score that includes factors besides reliability.

J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) uses problems reported by original owners. Its unit is problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), not the percentage of vehicles that failed. One vehicle can generate several problem reports, so a result of 204 PP100 does not mean 204% of vehicles broke down or that 204 out of 100 cars were lost.

J.D. Power says a lower PP100 indicates higher vehicle quality. Its quality-and-reliability component covers owner-experienced defects, malfunctions and design flaws across the vehicle, including areas such as the engine and infotainment system. That makes it useful for comparing owner experience among similar vehicles, but it is not a lifetime-odds calculation.
A composite consumer score may not be a reliability score
J.D. Power’s overall consumer rating combines quality and reliability (40%), driving experience (20%), resale value (20%) and dealership experience (20%). The methodology compares a model with vehicles in a matching price range and vehicle-size peer group. A high overall score can therefore reflect a pleasant drive, strong resale or dealer experience even when the underlying reliability result is only average. Use the quality-and-reliability subrating when your question is specifically about defects and malfunctions.
Read the publisher’s ratings methodology for the definitions and weighting rather than treating the headline consumer score as a pure failure rate.

What a long-term survival rate measures
A survival estimate asks a different question: given a vehicle population and a statistical model, what share is expected to reach a specified mileage? It is normally expressed as a probability or percentage, with the threshold stated explicitly.
Thresholds change the meaning
iSeeCars frames its 2026 luxury-car Reliability Rating around useful lifespan and the ability to last 200,000 miles or more. The rating runs from 1 to 10 and is based on its proprietary longest-lasting-vehicle research. A 1-to-10 rating is therefore the publisher’s scaled measure; it is not a PP100 result and should not be translated into a percentage chance of reaching 200,000 miles.

In a separate study, iSeeCars estimates the probability of reaching 250,000 miles. That higher threshold naturally answers a tougher longevity question than a 200,000-mile framing. A result at one threshold cannot be substituted for a result at another without knowing how the estimate was built.
How mileage estimates are modeled
The 250,000-mile study analyzed more than 395 million cars, calculated average odometer readings at each vehicle age and used a proprietary model to estimate survival probabilities at mileage thresholds. For a brand comparison, iSeeCars calculated odds for particular models and generations, then averaged those results across the brand’s lineup while weighting models by how common they were on the road. The output is an estimate for a vehicle population, not a promise about an individual car.

J.D. Power’s 2026 dependability study
The 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. It covered 184 specific problem areas in nine categories and was fielded from December 2024 through November 2025.
| J.D. Power VDS figure | What it describes | What it does not describe |
|---|---|---|
| 204 PP100 industry average | Reported problems per 100 vehicles in this three-year owner cohort | The percentage of cars that failed or the odds of reaching a future mileage |
| 217 PP100 premium-vehicle average | Reported problems per 100 premium vehicles in the same study | A 217% failure rate or a 217,000-mile survival forecast |
| 17 PP100 premium-to-mass-market gap | The reported difference between those study averages | A lifetime reliability penalty for every premium model |
J.D. Power reported that premium vehicles averaged 217 PP100, which was 8 PP100 higher year over year and 17 PP100 above mass-market vehicles. Those figures describe this study’s reported problems. They do not establish how many vehicles will still be operating at 200,000 or 250,000 miles.

The study’s time horizon matters. Owners had three years with 2023 model-year vehicles; the result is not a lifetime survival study. As J.D. Power director of auto benchmarking Jason Norton put it, “As owners hold onto their vehicles longer, the long-term ownership experience matters more than ever.” The statement highlights why a three-year measure and a high-mileage estimate can both be useful without measuring the same outcome.

iSeeCars’ 2026 luxury-car ranking uses a 1-to-10 Reliability Rating tied to useful lifespan and the ability to last at least 200,000 miles. It is a ranking methodology, not a survey count of problems per 100 vehicles.
The separate 250,000-mile brand study reports these estimated probabilities:
| Luxury brand | Estimated chance of reaching 250,000 miles | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Lexus | 14.4% | Study estimate for the brand’s modeled vehicle population |
| Acura | 9.5% | Study estimate, not a guarantee for an individual vehicle |
| Lincoln | 4.7% | Brand average that can conceal model and generation differences |
| Cadillac | 3.9% | Brand average, not a prediction for every Cadillac model |
| Luxury-brand average | 3.4% | Average across the luxury brands included in the study |
These percentages are not denominated like PP100. A 14.4% survival estimate means the model projects that share of the studied population to reach the stated threshold; it does not say that 14.4 out of every 100 owners reported a problem. Conversely, 204 PP100 does not mean a 2.04% chance of failing before a mileage milestone.
Why a luxury brand can score well on one measure and poorly on another
Different outcomes
A dependability study counts defects and malfunctions during a specified ownership period. A survival model estimates whether vehicles reach a mileage threshold. A car can have few early problems but still face expensive wear, complex emissions systems or high-mileage repairs later. Another car can accumulate minor early complaints yet have a large, well-documented population that remains on the road for very high mileage.

Different populations
J.D. Power’s VDS uses original owners of a specified model year. iSeeCars’ mileage analysis uses a much broader vehicle population and incorporates odometer patterns by age. A new-car owner cohort and a mixed-age used-car population are not equivalent samples.
Different units and denominators
PP100 counts reported problem events relative to 100 vehicles. A survival percentage estimates the proportion expected to pass a mileage threshold. Because the denominator and event differ, putting the numbers in one ranking table can create a false sense of precision.
Different levels of aggregation
Brand averages are especially easy to misread. iSeeCars’ brand calculation averages model and generation results while weighting for how common each model is on the road. A high-volume model can influence the brand result more than a rare model. J.D. Power’s peer comparisons also depend on vehicle size and price-range groupings. For a purchase decision, the exact model, generation, model year and powertrain are more informative than a badge-level average.
How to compare two claims without mixing them up
- Name the outcome. Write down whether the claim concerns reported problems, predicted reliability, useful lifespan, or survival to a mileage threshold.
- Record the time horizon. Note the ownership duration, vehicle age or observation period. A three-year result cannot be presented as a lifetime forecast.
- Identify the population. Check whether the sample is original owners, all vehicles observed in service, a particular model year, or multiple generations.
- Check the unit. PP100, a 1-to-10 score and a percentage probability are different scales. Do not convert one into another without a published conversion method.
- Write down the mileage threshold. “Lasts a long time” is incomplete. Distinguish 200,000-mile framing from a 250,000-mile estimate.
- Check model specificity. Look for the exact model, generation, engine, hybrid system and transmission rather than relying on a brand mean.
- Separate relative and absolute claims. A peer-relative rank says how a vehicle compares with similar vehicles. A survival percentage is an estimated absolute-looking probability for a modeled population. Neither guarantees the condition of a particular used car.
How to apply the numbers when shopping for a used luxury car
Start with the exact vehicle identity
Record the VIN, model year, generation, body style, engine and drivetrain. A brand result can hide substantial differences between a naturally aspirated engine and a turbocharged one, or between a conventional powertrain and a hybrid system. Match the reliability or survival evidence to the configuration you are actually considering.
Use ratings to set questions, not to skip inspection
A favorable dependability result can help you identify fewer expected early problems relative to peers. It cannot tell you whether a particular car has been maintained, modified, crashed, neglected or exposed to severe service. A high survival estimate likewise describes a population, not the remaining life of the vehicle in front of you.

Verify service and ownership history
- Look for documented oil, coolant, transmission-fluid and brake maintenance appropriate to that powertrain.
- Check whether major scheduled services were completed on time and at the correct mileage.
- Confirm recall and campaign work through the manufacturer or an authorized service channel.
- Review title, accident, mileage and ownership records; a vehicle-history report can be an optional aid, but it does not replace an independent inspection.
- Have a qualified technician inspect leaks, corrosion, suspension wear, electronic faults, diagnostic codes and evidence of deferred repairs.
Price the failure consequences separately
Reliability and survival statistics do not include your repair budget, local labor rates or parts availability. Two cars with similar ratings can impose very different costs when an air suspension, turbocharger, battery pack, infotainment module or advanced driver-assistance sensor fails. Treat expected maintenance and repair exposure as a separate ownership calculation.
Common interpretation mistakes
“A low PP100 means this car will reach 250,000 miles”
It does not. Low PP100 indicates fewer reported problems in the specified study cohort and period. It does not supply a mileage-survival probability.
“A 1-to-10 reliability score is a percentage”
It is not. iSeeCars’ 1-to-10 rating is its own scale tied to useful lifespan and 200,000-mile capability. Without a published mapping, a score of 8 cannot be read as an 80% chance of reaching 200,000 miles.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The brand average describes every model”
It does not. Brand averages combine model and generation results, and weighting by vehicles in service can amplify common models. Always seek model-level evidence.
“A survival percentage predicts my individual car”
It does not. The estimate is based on a modeled population. Mileage, climate, maintenance, accident history, driving pattern and current mechanical condition can move an individual vehicle far away from the population average.
“A composite consumer score is the reliability score”
J.D. Power’s overall consumer rating allocates only 40% to quality and reliability; driving experience, resale value and dealership experience make up the remainder. Use the relevant subrating and methodology.
A practical decision framework
| Your question | Most relevant evidence | Limitation to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Will this model have many owner-reported issues in the first few years? | Model-specific dependability or quality-and-reliability data for the matching model year and peer group | Short observation window; not a lifetime forecast |
| How plausible is very high mileage for this vehicle population? | Survival estimates with a clearly stated 200,000- or 250,000-mile threshold | Population estimate; not a condition report |
| Which luxury brand has the strongest long-mileage record? | Brand survival estimates, used only as a screening comparison | Brand averages can hide model, generation and powertrain variation |
| Should I buy this particular used car? | Exact configuration, service records, history checks, diagnostic scan and independent inspection | No published rating can substitute for evidence about the individual vehicle |
Bottom line for buyers
Use reliability ratings to compare the type and frequency of problems observed or predicted over a defined period. Use long-term survival rates to understand the modeled chance of reaching a stated mileage threshold. Keep the source, cohort, unit and threshold attached to every number: J.D. Power’s 2026 VDS figures describe reported problems among original owners of 2023 vehicles after three years, while iSeeCars’ 250,000-mile figures are population estimates built from mileage patterns across more than 395 million cars. For a purchase, move from brand-level evidence to the exact model and powertrain, then let maintenance records, vehicle history and a professional inspection determine whether the individual car is a sound risk.
