A suitable lunar lava tube could shield astronauts better from radiation, micrometeoroids, and extreme surface temperature swings. But no evidence establishes that a tube is safer overall than a well-shielded surface habitat: reaching, verifying, pressurizing, powering, and maintaining an underground site introduce risks of their own.
Are lunar lava tubes safer than surface habitats overall?
There is no validated, whole-mission comparison that ranks a habitat in a confirmed lunar tube against an engineered surface habitat. The evidence addresses particular hazards and candidate sites, not comparative probabilities of injury or mission failure.
The answer depends on what “safer” means. A tube may offer better protection while crews are inside it, while a surface habitat may avoid the difficult transfer into an unverified underground space. And “surface habitat” does not have to mean an exposed, unshielded module: a design can use regolith cover or natural terrain for protection.
What hazards could a lava tube reduce?

Temperature: a strong potential advantage, with an important limit
NASA’s July 2022 account of Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter data and computer modeling reported a temperature of about 63°F (17°C) for a permanently shaded reach of a lunar pit. It contrasted that modeled setting with lunar surface extremes of about 260°F (127°C) in daytime and −280°F (−173°C) at night. The 63°F figure is not a direct measurement of a complete lava tube: NASA described a cave extending from the pit as likely to have a similarly stable temperature.

Radiation: shielding depends on the actual site
Rock above a crew could reduce natural radiation exposure, but “underground” is not a dose measurement. Protection depends on such factors as roof thickness and composition, entrance geometry, secondary particles, solar events, and where crew members spend their time. A surface habitat can also be shielded, so the relevant comparison is between specific designs and locations—not a cave versus an unprotected module.
Impacts: a physical barrier, not a complete safety case
An overhang or roof could block micrometeoroids and some impact ejecta. That potential benefit does not establish the condition or stability of a particular pit, nor does it show how the entrance and other exposed operations would fare.

What risks does an underground site add?
Finding and verifying a usable space
An orbital view of a pit or overhang cannot establish the full shape, structural condition, or accessibility of a subsurface void. Before a habitat could rely on a tube, crews or robotic systems would need enough information to assess its geometry and suitability.
Moving people and equipment
Reaching a subsurface site means managing the route from the landing area, descent or entry, mobility, and communications. NASA’s technical discussion identifies the risks of landing near difficult terrain and moving crew and habitation hardware to the underground area. The sources do not assign a comparative probability to those hazards.

Making the space habitable
A natural cavity is not automatically a pressurized habitat. Any plan would have to address the habitat interface, sealing and pressurization, inspection and maintenance, and the psychological environment of living in a confined space. NASA technical material treats these as planning concerns rather than solved features of a lunar tube.
Power, heat, and operations
Power and thermal-control systems must work at the selected site, including a way to handle waste heat. NASA’s technical material notes radiator and waste-heat considerations for nuclear power. The different environment of a cave may change the engineering choices; it does not remove the need for a site-specific power and operations plan.

Could astronauts live in a Moon cave now?
Not on the evidence available from NASA’s current investigation. In its October 2, 2026 announcement, NASA described GIMLI as an effort to determine whether Marius Hills Pit leads to a large underground lava tube. The announcement does not confirm that a tube exists there, or establish a count of habitable lunar lava tubes.
NASA’s 2014 account reported researcher Robert Wagner’s assessment that a habitat several dozen meters beneath an overhang could be very safe from radiation, micrometeorites, dust, and temperature swings. That was an expert assessment of a potential location, not a measured safety certification. The current investigation underscores the unresolved first question: whether a candidate pit connects to a suitable underground space.

What would make a fair safety comparison?
A meaningful decision would compare complete plans for specific sites, rather than treating “tube” and “surface” as finished habitat designs. The comparison would need to account for:
- Measured or well-characterized site geometry, roof material, structural condition, and entry route.
- Radiation exposure for the planned habitat layout and crew activities, including the shielding available to a surface alternative.
- Risks during landing, transfer, descent, construction, pressurization, and routine maintenance—not only conditions during occupancy.
- Thermal control, power availability, waste-heat rejection, communications, and contingency access.
- The particular mission duration and how often crew must leave the protected living area.
Until candidate underground spaces are mapped and these design-level risks can be compared, a tube is best described as a promising form of natural shelter—not a proven safer base location.
