Lullaby is not started by an NPC. It begins when you interact with the empty crib in the house at Fallen Village > Marketplace, then follows a fixed chain: collect the Weathered Key outside that house, use it to enter the house across the river and take the Toy from its bed, and return to the original crib to place the Toy. If the quest appears stuck, match the journal objective to that sequence and perform the required interaction itself; simply reaching a location is not enough.
Quick diagnosis: identify the stage before moving anywhere
Lullaby has four documented stages. The fastest way to recover is to read the exact wording in your journal, then verify the corresponding item or interaction rather than following an absent objective marker. There is no documented quest giver, conversation, or named NPC in this chain.

If your journal describes a different task, follow that wording first. The checks below are specifically for the documented Lullaby sequence and should not be used to override another quest objective.

1. Start the quest at the empty crib
Travel to Fallen Village and enter the Marketplace area. From the Marketplace Lantern, head toward the water and flames. Enter the house there and approach the empty crib. The quest starts automatically when you interact with the crib.

Being inside the correct house is not sufficient. The trigger is the crib interaction. If the journal still does not show Lullaby after you have entered the house, stand directly at the crib and use the interaction prompt. Walking past it, circling the room, or approaching another object does not substitute for the trigger.
- Use the Marketplace Lantern as your navigation reference.
- Look for the house on the route toward the water and flames.
- Confirm that you interacted with the empty crib, not merely the doorway or another prop.
- Read the journal again before leaving so you know which stage is active.
2. Leave through the back door and collect the Weathered Key
After the crib starts Lullaby, leave that house through its back door. The Weathered Key is on the ground outside, near the enemies. It is an item pickup, so reaching the area does not complete the step until the key itself has been collected.
Check your inventory if you are unsure whether the pickup registered. The documented route to the Toy house depends on this key; without it, the locked door across the river cannot be opened through the quest sequence. If enemies are nearby, deal with them or safely approach the pickup, then make sure the item is actually added before moving on.

- Search the ground immediately outside that door, near the enemies.
- Verify the Weathered Key in your inventory before attempting the next house.
3. Reach the locked house and take the Toy
From the key area, return toward the Marketplace Lantern and follow the path back. After the Volunteer, turn right. Continue to the house across the river and jump across to reach it. The Weathered Key opens this house’s door.
Use the key on the door; do not wait for an NPC to unlock it or look for a dialogue prompt. Once inside, go to the bed and pick up the Toy. Entering the house is only part of the stage. The journal cannot advance until the Toy is taken from the bed.

- Retrace toward the Lantern if you have lost the route.
- Use the Volunteer as the landmark where you turn right.
- Cross the river by jumping to the house on the opposite side.
- Use the Weathered Key on the locked door.
- Interact with the bed and collect the Toy.
4. Return to the crib to finish
After collecting the Toy, go back to the first house in the Marketplace. Approach the original crib and interact with it again to place the Toy. This is the completion trigger. Lullaby is not finished merely because the Toy is in your inventory or because you have returned to the room.
When the crib interaction succeeds, the quest completes and awards Tomorrow’s Promise Amber. If no completion occurs, remain at the crib and use the interaction prompt directly; then check the journal for a changed objective or completion state.
Fixes when the objective will not advance
The journal still points to the crib
This means the final crib interaction has not registered, or you have not started the quest at the first crib yet. Return to the original house and interact with the crib itself. Make sure you are using the prompt while positioned at the crib, not simply standing in the house.
If you are at the start of the quest, the same instruction applies: the empty crib is the automatic trigger. Once it starts, leave through the back door and look for the key rather than waiting for an NPC marker.
The Weathered Key is not in your inventory
Retrace the route to the crib house and exit through the back door. The key is on the ground outside, near the enemies. A marker may not draw your attention to it, so inspect the ground around that exit and use the pickup interaction. Until the key is collected, the locked house across the river cannot be opened by the documented route.

After picking it up, open the inventory and confirm the Weathered Key is present before attempting the river crossing. This separates a missed pickup from a later door or Toy problem.
The locked house cannot be opened
First verify that the Weathered Key is actually in your inventory. Then confirm that you are at the house across the river, reached by turning right after the Volunteer on the path back toward the Lantern. Use the key on that house’s door. Searching other houses or waiting for a resident will not progress Lullaby because no NPC is documented as part of the door step.
If you reached a different building, return to the Volunteer landmark and repeat the right turn. The route matters: the Toy house is across the river and is accessed by jumping across.
The house opened, but the Toy objective remains
Entering the house does not count as taking the Toy. Go to the bed and perform the pickup interaction. Confirm the Toy is in your inventory or that the journal has moved to the return-to-crib instruction before leaving.
If you searched the room but did not use the bed interaction, revisit the bed and look for the prompt. The documented step is specifically to pick up the Toy from the bed, not merely to discover the house.

The Toy is collected, but the quest is still active
Return to the original crib house in the Marketplace. Interact with the same crib used to begin Lullaby and place the Toy. The quest’s final trigger is this second crib interaction. Do not search for a completion NPC or another reward chest; no such step is documented.
What to do when the objective marker is missing
A missing marker does not, by itself, establish that Lullaby is broken. Use the journal text and fixed landmarks as your route instructions.
- If the journal mentions the crib, go to the original Marketplace house and interact with the crib.
- If you have not confirmed the key, return through the crib house’s back door and pick up the Weathered Key near the enemies.
- If the task concerns the Toy, travel back toward the Lantern, turn right after the Volunteer, jump across the river, and unlock the opposite house.
- If you are inside that house, take the Toy from the bed.
- After obtaining the Toy, return to the first crib and interact with it to complete the quest.
This landmark-based method is more reliable than searching the entire area for a marker or an NPC, because the documented sequence advances through two items and two environment interactions.

No named NPC is required by the documented progression. Lullaby starts at an empty crib and advances through the Weathered Key, the locked house, the Toy, and the final crib interaction. An absent NPC is therefore not evidence of a missing quest trigger unless your journal shows a different objective unrelated to Lullaby.
The Volunteer is a navigation landmark for the route to the Toy house. The documented steps do not require a conversation with the Volunteer or any other character. Use that location to find the right turn, not as a quest-giver search target.

Recovery checklist before treating the quest as bugged
- Journal: Read the exact current objective and match it to one of the four stages.
- Starting trigger: Interact with the empty crib in the Marketplace house.
- Key: Check the inventory for the Weathered Key collected outside the back door.
- Route: From the Lantern, follow back toward the Volunteer, turn right, and cross the river by jumping.
- Door: Use the key on the house across the river.
- Toy: Pick it up from the bed; do not stop after entering the house.
- Completion: Return to the original crib and interact with it to place the Toy.
- NPC assumption: Do not abandon the route to search for a named quest giver; none is documented for Lullaby.
Work through the checklist in order. Each check isolates one possible missed interaction without resetting progress or introducing an undocumented requirement.
What the official hotfix does—and does not—confirm
The official Steam Demo Hotfix 1.03 announcement lists fixes for a Witch Hunt loading crash, crashes involving corrupted blood effects, endless audio loops after certain enemy kills, GPU auto-detection, and performance. It does not name Lullaby or identify a Lullaby progression blocker.
Accordingly, there is no documented Lullaby-specific patch fix to apply from that announcement. If the four interactions above are completed but the journal still refuses to advance, record the exact objective text and the interaction that failed before seeking game support. Do not assume that installing the hotfix alone changes the quest logic described here.

Quest context and reward
Valor Mortis is listed on Steam as a single-player PC action/RPG from One More Level and Lyrical Games. Lullaby is a side quest in Fallen Village’s Marketplace. Its reward for completing the final crib interaction is Tomorrow’s Promise Amber.
The Weathered Key and Toy are digital in-game quest items. They are not documented as physical products, guidebooks, collectibles, or accessories, so searching for an external item or a real-world key will not help with progression.
