There is no single standard scale for Luffy figures. Manufacturers publish either an explicit fraction such as 1/20 or 1/8, a height such as 140 mm, or a nominal line size such as 6.5 inches or 12 inches. Those measurements describe different products and cannot be treated as one universal scale chart. Before buying, match the exact product line and version, confirm the manufacturer’s own height and scale statement, check whether the measurement is approximate or includes a base, and verify articulation, materials and included parts.
The examples below show why two figures both called “Luffy” can differ by more than 20 cm. Use the product page for the exact release as the authority; marketplace titles and photos often omit the details that determine whether a figure will fit your shelf or match your collection.
Scale and size are different measurements
Height is the physical dimension of the finished figure. It may be given in millimetres, centimetres or inches. A listing that says 140 mm, 14.5 cm or 10 inches is reporting size, not necessarily scale.

Scale is a ratio between the figure and a reference subject. A stated 1/8 scale means the figure is intended to be one-eighth of the reference height used by that manufacturer. A stated 1/20 scale means one-twentieth. The reference may be a particular character profile, an interpretation of the character, or a product-line convention. Unless the maker publishes the fraction, do not calculate one from a photograph or from height alone.

Luffy’s height and proportions change across the story, and manufacturers release figures from different arcs, costumes and product lines. Even if you know a reference height, deriving a fraction from a listed measurement can produce a misleading result when the sculpt is stylized, posed, or measured to a hair tip rather than the top of the head. Treat a fractional scale as comparable only when the product page explicitly states it.
Verified Luffy figure examples
The following products illustrate the range of conventions in current listings. Dimensions and prices are the figures stated by the named manufacturer or retailer; they are not a standardized cross-brand scale system.

These entries are intentionally not ranked. A 215 mm figure with a 1/8 claim, a 140 mm figure with no fraction, and a 12-inch line figure answer different buyer needs. The meaningful comparison is the exact specification attached to the exact release.
How to read a product listing before you order
1. Identify the complete product, not just “Luffy figure”
Start with the product line, appearance or arc, character name, release version and SKU or manufacturer item number. “Gear 5,” “Summit War of Marineford,” “Straw Hat,” anniversary editions and compact-format products can all refer to very different sculpts. Save a screenshot or the page title with the item number before purchasing; marketplace sellers sometimes combine photographs from more than one release.
Check that the listing’s photographs match the written specification. A seller may use a promotional image of a later reissue while retaining an older title. If the manufacturer’s page and the seller disagree, treat the discrepancy as unresolved until the seller confirms the exact box and item number.
2. Find the maker’s own dimension and unit
Look for a field labelled “height,” “size,” “product size,” or “approximately.” Record the unit exactly as published. A value of 140 mm is 14 cm, while 5.7 inches is about 14.5 cm; small differences can come from rounding or from measuring different points on a pose. Do not silently replace “about” with a precise number.

When a listing gives both a fraction and a height, record both. The fraction explains the intended relationship to the character reference; the height tells you whether the physical item fits your display. When only a height appears, write “scale not stated” in your comparison notes rather than assigning a guessed 1/10, 1/12 or 1/6 label.
3. Check what the measurement includes
Some companies measure the character sculpt; others measure the highest part of an effect, hat, hair, weapon or dynamic pose. A pedestal may be listed separately or omitted from the headline dimension. Tamashii Nations lists a dedicated pedestal with the approximately 140 mm Figuarts ZERO product, but the cited sources do not establish a common pedestal footprint for Luffy releases.
Ask the seller for the assembled height with the supplied stand when the page is unclear. For a shelf, measure the complete display envelope: height to the highest tip, width at the widest effect or arm, and depth from the front of the base to the farthest rear point. A figure can meet its advertised height and still collide with the shelf above because of its pose.
4. Confirm approximation language
“Approximately,” “about” and rounded conversions are meaningful qualifications. Tamashii Nations describes the Figuarts ZERO height as approximate, and Sideshow marks the Banpresto size values approximate. Packaging tolerances, pose angle and the point chosen for measurement can all create a small difference. Leave a margin rather than planning a shelf to the last millimetre.
5. Separate figure height from package dimensions
Retail pages may show shipping-box dimensions, carton size or a case-pack measurement alongside the assembled figure. A large box does not indicate a large character sculpt. Use a specification explicitly labelled for the finished figure, and treat package dimensions as a separate check for delivery and storage.

Choosing by display purpose
For a compact desk or crowded shelf
The approximately 8.6 cm LUFFY’s product is the smallest example in this set and is explicitly presented as a convenient compact form. A short figure still needs clearance for its base, hat, hair or effects. Measure the available height and depth, then compare those dimensions with the product page rather than with a promotional image.

For a standard character-scale display
The approximately 140 mm Figuarts ZERO and the 14.5 cm S.H.Figuarts example occupy a similar height range, but they are separate lines with different design and articulation conventions. Their similar numbers do not make their bases, poses or proportions interchangeable. Choose the one whose release description matches the arc and display style you want.
For a large centerpiece
The approximately 215 mm 1/8 ARTCANVAS release and the approximately 25 cm Banpresto Chronicle Master Stars Piece are substantially taller than the compact and 14 cm examples. Plan for the widest part of the pose and the stand, not only the nominal vertical measurement. The ARTCANVAS page lists a planned March 2027 shipment, so its schedule should be checked again before ordering.
For posing, play or fixed display
Bandai describes Anime Heroes Gear 5 Luffy as articulated and suitable for posing, play and display. A fixed-pose product such as a display-oriented Figuarts ZERO release may instead emphasize a sculpted action scene and a dedicated pedestal. Decide whether you need movable joints, a stable permanent pose, or both before comparing prices. Articulation can change the effective footprint because bent limbs and alternate poses occupy different space.
Materials, articulation and included parts
Materials affect handling and expectations but do not determine scale. The cited Figuarts ZERO and S.H.Figuarts listings specify ABS/PVC. That tells you the material category, not the figure’s weight, seam visibility or long-term color stability. Do not infer those qualities from the material abbreviation alone.
Read the included-parts list for the exact version. Look for:
- Display pedestal, support arm or connector.
- Alternate hands, faces, hats, hair or other character parts.
- Effect pieces, weapons or removable accessories.
- Instructions for assembly and safe pose limits.
- Any parts sold separately or shown only for photography.
The available sources do not provide a complete accessory comparison across every example in the table, so a photograph is not proof that an effect or alternate part is in the box. Use the “contents” or “what’s included” field for the exact SKU.

Planning shelf space accurately
Measure the display location
- Measure clear height from the shelf surface to the underside of the shelf above.
- Measure usable width between side walls or neighbouring figures.
- Measure depth from the front edge to the back wall, including any door or glass clearance.
- Leave a margin for the widest effect, raised fist, hat brim or support arm.
For a cabinet, also check the door opening. A figure may fit inside after assembly but fail to pass through the door if the pose is wider than the opening.
Measure the assembled figure, not only the character
When dimensions are not published, ask the seller for three measurements: maximum height including the stand, maximum width, and maximum depth. If the answer is unavailable, treat the product as a display-risk purchase and choose a listing with a manufacturer specification. Never assume a round base is smaller than the figure’s widest effect.
Plan for future rearrangement
Leave enough room to remove the figure without striking adjacent pieces. Articulated products may be posed later in a taller or wider configuration. A pedestal also needs a level surface; a shelf that is technically deep enough may still be unstable if the base overhangs.
Prices, stock and release dates
The cited Bandai pages list an MSRP of $18.99 for Anime Heroes Mega Luffy and $23.99 for Anime Heroes Gear 5 Luffy. Those are listed MSRPs, not guaranteed current prices, sale prices or delivered totals. The Japanese ARTCANVAS page lists ¥8,800 and a planned March 2027 shipment. Currency, import charges, retailer markups, shipping and tax can change the amount you actually pay.
Availability and regional purchase routes are volatile. The official Tamashii Nations page for Figuarts ZERO lists Amazon among regional purchase options, but the current marketplace listing, seller identity and item condition must be checked at the time of purchase. Confirm whether an offer is new, used, a pre-order, a reissue or a third-party listing, and verify that the photographs and item number match.

Assuming every 6-inch or 12-inch label is a scale
Line-size labels describe a product family’s intended height range. They do not automatically mean 1/12 or 1/6. If no fractional scale appears in the manufacturer’s specification, record the listing as “6.5-inch line” or “12-inch line” and stop there.

Converting a height into a fraction without a reference
A 140 mm figure is not automatically 1/12, and a 215 mm figure is not automatically 1/8 unless the maker says so. The 215 mm ARTCANVAS product is explicitly 1/8; the 140 mm Figuarts ZERO example is not given a fraction. That distinction should remain in your notes.
Comparing approximate numbers as if they were laboratory measurements
Approximate values can differ because of pose, hair, effects, stand height and rounding. Use a practical clearance buffer and ask for assembled measurements when the fit is critical.
Ignoring the base
A dedicated pedestal can add height and depth, and a support arm may extend behind the character. Check the contents list and the full footprint. The consulted product pages do not establish one standard base size for Luffy figures.
Buying from a mixed or incomplete listing
Marketplace pages sometimes combine a character name, photo and specifications from different releases. Match the product line, version, item number, stated dimensions and included parts before paying. If one of those elements conflicts, request clarification or select a listing with an unambiguous manufacturer identity.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Identity: product line, arc or version, manufacturer and SKU match across the page, photos and box.
- Scale: a fractional claim is recorded only when the manufacturer states it.
- Height: unit, approximate wording and measurement point are clear.
- Footprint: height, width and depth include the pose, effects and stand where relevant.
- Base: pedestal or support contents are confirmed, and the shelf has clearance.
- Use: articulation meets your needs for posing, play or fixed display.
- Materials: ABS/PVC or other stated materials are noted without assuming unlisted properties.
- Contents: alternate parts and effects shown in photos are confirmed as included.
- Cost: MSRP, current price, shipping, tax and import charges are distinguished.
- Timing: pre-order or future shipment dates are checked for the current region.
- Condition: new, used, reissue and third-party seller status are explicit.
Bottom line: how to compare two Luffy figures
Put the exact products side by side in a note with five separate fields: stated scale, stated height, approximation wording, complete footprint and display function. Use the fraction only where it is explicitly published; use millimetres, centimetres or inches for physical planning; and treat bases, effects, articulation and release status as separate decisions. This method prevents a compact 1/20 product, a 1/8 centerpiece and an unscaled 6.5-inch action figure from being compared as though they followed one universal Luffy scale.
