Ludeon Studios is developing another game for its new in-house Waylith Engine, but it has not revealed the project’s name or what kind of game it is. The October 12, 2026 announcement also says RimWorld update 1.7 moves the colony simulator from Unity to Waylith; at the time, 1.7 was available only through Steam’s optional unstable beta branch, while the main branch remained on 1.6.
What Ludeon has said about its new game
The studio’s announcement confirms that another game is in development for Waylith, the engine it built in-house. Tia Young, writing for Ludeon, said: “RimWorld isn’t the only game on Waylith. We’re working on something new! It may be a little while before we can share more details, but we couldn’t resist telling you.”
That is the extent of the reveal. The announcement does not give the project a title, genre, setting, platform, or release window, and it does not describe a connection to RimWorld beyond the shared engine. It does not call the project RimWorld 2, so treating it as a sequel would be speculation.
The supplied headline’s “13 years” framing is not explained by the announcement. The post confirms a new game project on October 12, 2026, but does not identify a particular start date or milestone for the 13-year count.

What changes in RimWorld 1.7
Ludeon says update 1.7 moves RimWorld from Unity to Waylith, its own engine. The studio says the game looks and plays the same after the transition; the change is principally in the technology underneath it, along with performance and modding improvements the studio describes.
Performance claims from Ludeon
Ludeon reports a 2–4× performance improvement in its tests. In a late-game colony stress test, it says 1.7 performed 2.2× better than 1.6. It also reports that a modpack containing 1,500 mods took 6 minutes to load in 1.7, compared with 14 minutes in 1.6.

These are studio-reported results, not independently verified benchmarks. Ludeon cautions that results vary depending on the PC and the mods being used. It identifies startup, loading with large mod lists, map and world generation, and general ticks per second as areas that are faster.

Ludeon says Waylith supports the latest C# language features and makes complex mods easier to write without harming performance. It also says larger visual changes and complex custom effects are more accessible. More than two dozen modders helped test and prepare the engine’s debut, according to the studio.

Trying update 1.7 and checking compatibility
When Ludeon announced 1.7, it was available for testing on Steam’s unstable branch, while the main branch remained on 1.6. Branch availability and Steam’s interface can change, so check Ludeon’s official announcement or the game’s Steam properties for the current status before switching.
At announcement, the published route was Steam Library → right-click RimWorld → Properties → Betas → select “unstable.” Ludeon also said to restart Steam if the game did not update. If those labels or options have changed, use the current Steam interface rather than assuming the beta remains available under the same steps.

Saves and mods
- Saves: Ludeon says 1.6 saves load in 1.7, and saves made in 1.7 also work after returning to 1.6.
- Mods: The studio says the vast majority work without changes. A mod may still be marked “potentially unsupported” if its version number has not been updated; that label does not necessarily mean the mod is broken. Ludeon encourages mod authors to test and publish a 1.7-compatible version.
Older PCs
Ludeon warns that a PC more than 10 years old may not run 1.7 and directs affected players to its official development Discord. This is a caution, not a full system-requirements list: the announcement does not provide minimum or recommended components, so age alone cannot determine whether a particular PC will run the update.

What players can conclude now
There are two separate announcements here: RimWorld is moving to Ludeon’s Waylith Engine in 1.7, and the studio is making another game that will use that engine. The latter remains only a tease. For players considering the 1.7 test branch, the practical decision is whether to try it with their own PC and mod setup, bearing in mind that the performance figures are Ludeon’s results and branch status may have changed since the announcement.
