To install the original Lucky Block mod, choose the exact Minecraft version and mod loader (Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge), install that loader, launch the game once, then place the matching Lucky Block .jar in .minecraft/mods/. Launch the same modded profile before adding optional content; Lucky Block add-ons belong in .minecraft/addons/lucky/. Multiplayer is more complicated: the original project should be installed with compatible server and client versions, while a separate Modrinth project called Lucky Blocks advertises server-side-only play. Check which project and file you actually downloaded before telling friends they can join without installing anything.
What the Lucky Block mod adds
Lucky Block is a Minecraft Java Edition mod built around a block with a random result. According to the original project documentation, opening one selects one of more than 100 possible outcomes. Results can include useful items, chests, hostile mobs, structures, potions and enchantments, so breaking a block can reward preparation or create an immediate emergency.

The original project also adds three named items: the Lucky Sword, Lucky Bow and Lucky Potion. A standard Lucky Block is crafted with eight gold ingots and a dispenser. Luck can be changed by combining the block or certain lucky items with other items in a crafting table. A higher or lower luck value changes the balance between beneficial and harmful results; it does not turn every opening into a guaranteed reward.
This guide covers the original project maintained by Alex Socha (player_in_distress) and distributed through CurseForge, plus the separate Modrinth project whose server-only claim is often confused with the original mod. The installation steps below are for Java Edition. They do not describe Bedrock add-ons or Marketplace content.

Choose the correct Minecraft version and loader first
Lucky Block files are not interchangeable. CurseForge lists files for different Minecraft releases and for Forge, Fabric and NeoForge. A jar built for one loader will not work merely because the Minecraft version number looks similar. The maintainer’s release names also encode loader and minimum-version information, so read the complete filename and project file page before downloading.

At the time covered by the project listing, the newest listed original-project file was a NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.8, updated December 26, 2025. That is a dated listing, not a promise that it is the newest file when you read this. Always select the file that matches the version you intend to play rather than automatically choosing the newest upload.

- Write down the Minecraft version shown on the installation you will actually launch.
- Choose one loader and install that loader’s profile. Forge, Fabric and NeoForge are separate choices.
- On the official project page, confirm that the Lucky Block file names the same version and loader.
- Check whether the file has a dependency listed by the project. Install only dependencies that the file specifically requires.
- Keep the downloaded jar in its original form. Do not unzip it, rename its extension or combine files from different loaders.
How to install Lucky Block on Java Edition
The maintainer’s documented sequence is deliberately short: install Forge or Fabric, run Minecraft once, then put the Lucky Block mod in the .minecraft/mods/ folder. NeoForge follows the same matching principle, using its own profile and release file.

- Back up anything you care about. Copy existing worlds and, if you already use mods, save the current
modsfolder somewhere outside.minecraft. A backup lets you remove a failed experiment without risking a world. - Pick the profile. Decide the exact Minecraft version and whether you will use Forge, Fabric or NeoForge. Install that loader from its official installer or launcher instructions.
- Launch the loader once. Start the new modded profile and wait until Minecraft reaches the title screen. This creates the required game directories and confirms that the loader itself starts before Lucky Block is introduced.
- Close Minecraft completely. Do not copy jars while the game is running; close the launcher and the game so files are not locked or only partially read.
- Open the correct game directory. In the standard launcher installation, this is the
.minecraftdirectory. On Windows it is normally under your user AppData folder; macOS and Linux use different home-directory locations. If you changed the launcher’s game directory, use that custom location instead of assuming the default. - Create or open
mods. Inside the active game directory, create a folder named exactlymodsif the loader did not create one. - Copy the matching Lucky Block jar. Download it from the official CurseForge project page or the maintainer-linked release path, then place the jar directly in
.minecraft/mods/. Do not put it in a nested folder. - Launch the same profile again. Select the loader profile you prepared, not vanilla Minecraft and not another loader’s profile. Reach the title screen and check the installed-mod list or the in-game mod menu if your loader provides one.
- Test a clean world. Create a temporary creative world, obtain or craft a Lucky Block, and open it. Testing before importing a valuable survival world isolates installation problems from world-specific problems.
If the game reaches the title screen but the block or items are missing, verify that you launched the same game directory where you placed the jar. Multiple launchers and custom profiles can use different directories.
Where Lucky Block add-ons go
Install the base mod before installing custom content. Launch once with only Lucky Block, close the game, then create or open .minecraft/addons/lucky/ and place the add-on files there. The original project documentation directs users to this folder.
- Confirm that the base Lucky Block jar loads by itself.
- Exit Minecraft and locate the active
.minecraftdirectory. - Create the path
addons/luckyif it does not already exist. - Copy the add-on into
.minecraft/addons/lucky/, following that add-on’s own version and loader requirements. - Restart the matching modded profile and test the add-on in a disposable world.
Do not place add-ons in mods unless the add-on’s instructions explicitly say it is a separate mod jar. The two folders serve different purposes in the original project’s workflow. If an add-on is not recognized, first check the path, spelling and active game directory, then check that the add-on was made for your Lucky Block and Minecraft versions.

Can friends join a Lucky Block server without installing the mod?
There is no universal yes or no. Multiplayer requirements depend on the exact Lucky Block project and version. The original project is documented as a client-and-server mod, so plan for the server and every required client to use compatible Minecraft, loader and mod versions. A client running vanilla Minecraft should not be assumed to understand content supplied by that project.
A separate Modrinth project named Lucky Blocks states that it supports server-side-only play, meaning players are not required to install the mod to join a server that uses its lucky blocks. That statement applies to that Modrinth project, not automatically to the original CurseForge project or to every file with “Lucky Block” in its name. Read the exact project page and file description before distributing connection instructions.
Before inviting players
- Record the server’s Minecraft version, loader and exact Lucky Block file version.
- Determine whether the chosen project requires a client installation or explicitly supports server-side-only play.
- If clients need the mod, give each player the same jar and loader version from the canonical project page.
- Back up the world before adding, removing or replacing mods. Removing content that generated blocks, items or structures can make existing chunks unsafe to load.
- Test with one second account or trusted player before opening the server to a larger group.
Set up a small multiplayer server
The maintainer’s README documents a basic server workflow. Exact filenames and launcher commands can vary by loader release, so use the server package supplied for your chosen Minecraft version and loader.

- Prepare a separate server directory. Keep server files and backups outside your everyday client installation. This makes rollback and permission management easier.
- Install the matching server loader. Use the Forge, Fabric or NeoForge server setup that corresponds to the Minecraft version and Lucky Block file. Do not copy a client-only profile and assume it is a complete server.
- Start the server task once. The initial run normally creates configuration files and stops when it needs the EULA agreement.
- Accept the EULA. Open
run/eula.txtin the server directory and change the agreement as required by Mojang’s terms, then save the file. - Edit
server.properties. Set the world name, game rules, difficulty, player limit and network settings you intend to use. Keep a copy of the original file before making extensive changes. - Install Lucky Block on the server. Put the server-compatible jar in the server’s
modsdirectory. If the selected project requires client installation, prepare the identical jar and loader for every player. - Restart and watch the console. Wait for the server to report that it has finished loading. Stop immediately if the log reports a version mismatch, missing dependency or duplicate mod.
- Connect locally first. Join from the host computer or local network before exposing the server to the internet. This separates mod configuration problems from router or firewall problems.
- Share the configured address safely. Give players the address and port you configured, and avoid publishing it publicly unless you understand the security implications. Keep the server software and operating system maintained.
Self-hosted or managed hosting?

Choose self-hosting when you want maximum file control and are comfortable maintaining the process. Choose managed hosting when keeping a server online, handling ports and maintaining backups is more work than you want to do. In either case, mod compatibility remains your responsibility.

The launcher crashes before the title screen
- Confirm the Minecraft version and loader in the profile exactly match the Lucky Block jar.
- Remove recently added mods and launch with only the loader and Lucky Block. Add other mods back one at a time to identify a dependency or conflict.
- Check the Java/runtime requirement for your Minecraft and loader release.
- Make sure there is only one Lucky Block jar in the active
modsfolder; duplicate versions can conflict. - Read the first meaningful error in the latest log rather than relying on the final “game crashed” line.
The game starts, but Lucky Block is not listed
- Verify that the jar is directly inside the active profile’s
modsfolder. - Check for a second launcher or custom instance using a different game directory.
- Make sure you launched the matching Forge, Fabric or NeoForge profile rather than vanilla.
- Re-download from the canonical project page if the file is incomplete or has an unexpected extension.
An add-on does nothing
- Install and test the base mod first.
- Use
.minecraft/addons/lucky/for original-project add-ons, not a similarly named folder. - Check the add-on’s stated Minecraft, loader and base-mod compatibility.
- Test in a new world so an old world does not hide newly added content.
Friends cannot connect
- Compare the server and client Minecraft versions, loader versions and required mod files character for character.
- Confirm that the server finished loading and that the configured address and port are reachable.
- Check firewall and router rules only after local or same-network testing succeeds.
- If the project is advertised as server-side-only, verify that you installed that specific project and version; do not apply the claim to the original mod automatically.
A world behaves incorrectly after removing a mod
Restore the backup made before the change. A world can contain blocks, entities or structures supplied by a mod; removing the supplying content can cause missing data or loading errors. Do not repeatedly open the only copy of a valuable world while experimenting.
Distribution and permissions
CurseForge’s project guidance permits use on public or private servers, YouTube videos, and distribution of custom maps or mini-games when the Lucky Block mod itself is not bundled. It also states that modpacks containing Lucky Block may not be distributed on websites other than CurseForge and that the mod may not be re-uploaded elsewhere.

Share the canonical project page and instructions rather than mirrors or re-uploaded jars. For a modpack, use the platform’s supported distribution method and let players download the original file through the authorized page. Keep custom maps and your own configuration separate from the mod binary unless the project’s current terms explicitly allow bundling.

- Every player knows the exact Minecraft version.
- Everyone is using the same loader family and compatible loader release.
- The server and clients have the required Lucky Block file, or the selected project explicitly supports server-side-only play.
- The base mod was tested before add-ons were installed.
- Add-ons are in
addons/luckyand match the base mod. - A clean backup exists before changing a shared world.
- The host has tested a local connection before sharing the public address.
- Downloads come from the canonical project page, not a mirror.
The Bottom Line
Match the Minecraft version, loader and Lucky Block file before installing anything; launch once with the base mod, then use .minecraft/addons/lucky/ for original-project add-ons. For multiplayer, verify the exact project’s client requirement instead of assuming every Lucky Block mod is server-side-only, and back up the world before changing its mod set.
