Neither Lucidchart nor Visio is the automatic winner for project diagrams: the right choice depends on the diagrams your team needs, where it works, and which Visio plan you mean. Lucidchart is worth considering for browser-based collaboration across workplace apps; Visio is a stronger fit when your team already uses Microsoft 365 or needs Plan 2’s Windows desktop app, offline files, or specialized diagram features.
Start with the Visio plan, not just the product name
Microsoft offers three different levels that matter to this comparison. Visio in Microsoft 365 is a lightweight app for basic diagrams. Plan 1 adds professional diagram types and web capabilities. Plan 2 includes Plan 1 features plus a Windows desktop app and more advanced diagramming and data functions. Microsoft says the included app is not a replacement for the paid plans when specialized diagrams are needed (Microsoft’s overview of Visio in Microsoft 365).
Visio in Microsoft 365: basic diagrams
The included app supports basic flowcharts and general-purpose diagrams. It offers cloud storage and web collaboration, but it does not support every diagram type available in the paid plans. In particular, a diagram made with an unsupported type may be viewable in another Visio plan but not editable in the lightweight app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVisio Plan 1: more professional diagram types in the web app
Plan 1 adds thousands of shapes and Microsoft icons, cross-functional flowcharts, detailed network and cloud architecture diagrams, ERD and UML 2.5 diagrams, mind maps, organization charts, and Power BI integration. Consult Microsoft’s plan comparison and supported-diagram list for the specific types available to your plan.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Visio Plan 2: desktop, offline work, and advanced capabilities
Plan 2 includes Plan 1 capabilities and the Windows desktop app, with offline and local-file support. Microsoft lists advanced process diagrams including BPMN 2.0, floor plans, engineering and electrical diagrams, timelines, data connectivity, custom-shape programmability, AutoCAD support, and integrations with Microsoft apps. Microsoft’s product page also advertises “250,000+ shapes”; that is a Microsoft product-page claim, with no publication year stated on the page.
Compare the workflows that matter to project teams

When Lucidchart may fit better
Consider Lucidchart if browser access is enough and your project work depends on collaboration across tools such as Confluence or Jira. Its publisher says paid accounts can edit and share Visio files and export Lucidchart documents to Visio format. Those claims describe vendor-supported workflows; they do not establish that every object or layout converts perfectly.
When Visio may fit better
Consider Visio if the team already works in Microsoft 365, especially when cloud coauthoring and Teams fit the existing workflow. Choose the precise tier by diagram type: Plan 2 is the relevant option if you need its Windows desktop application, offline or local files, BPMN 2.0, data connectivity, or other specialized capabilities.

Check the diagrams your project actually requires
Before choosing a subscription, list the diagrams that people will create and edit. Match each type to the exact Visio tier or Lucidchart workflow rather than assuming all editions of Visio behave alike.
- Flowcharts: Basic flowcharts are supported in Visio in Microsoft 365. Cross-functional flowcharts require a paid Visio plan.
- Network and cloud architecture: Microsoft lists detailed network and cloud architecture diagrams with Plan 1 capabilities.
- ERD and UML: Microsoft lists ERD and UML 2.5 diagrams with Plan 1 capabilities.
- BPMN: Microsoft lists BPMN 2.0 among Plan 2’s advanced process diagram features.
- Floor plans, engineering, and electrical diagrams: Microsoft lists these specialized types under Plan 2.

Understand file compatibility before migrating
Lucid’s help page lists VSDX files made with Visio 2013 or later, VSD files made with Visio 2007 or later, and VDX files made with Visio 2003 or later as importable formats. For older files, Lucid advises resaving them in a recent Visio version as VSDX (Lucid’s Visio import instructions).
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMicrosoft says Visio in Microsoft 365 supports VSDX but not legacy VSD files; Plan 1 or Plan 2 is needed for VSD. The lightweight app also cannot edit diagrams built with types it does not support, even when a different Visio plan can. Compatibility with a file format does not guarantee that every layout, object, or feature will survive conversion. Test representative files and confirm the destination plan can edit their diagram types before migrating.

Compare the actual subscription cost
On Microsoft’s US product page, Visio Plan 1 is listed at US$5 per user per month and Plan 2 at US$15 per user per month when paid yearly. Microsoft says Visio in Microsoft 365 is included with Microsoft 365 commercial plans. These are US prices and can vary with region, taxes, bundle eligibility, and terms; verify current local pricing before purchase (Microsoft’s pricing and plan page).
Lucidchart has individual and team plans. Compare the current price of the plan that provides the collaboration, integrations, and file functions your team needs with the appropriate Visio tier. Do not compare a basic app included with Microsoft 365 to a paid, full-featured diagramming subscription as if they had equivalent capabilities. Check current Lucid plan details on its pricing page.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist to make the choice
- Inventory diagram types: Write down the project diagrams that must be created and edited, then verify which exact Visio plan supports each one.
- Choose the work environment: Decide whether browser-based access is enough or whether the team needs Plan 2’s Windows desktop app and offline or local-file support.
- Map the collaboration stack: Check the integrations and plan entitlements for the tools your team uses, such as Teams, Microsoft 365, Confluence, or Jira.
- Check data and automation needs: If diagrams must connect to data or feed Microsoft workflows, verify the documented Plan 2 features against that requirement.
- Test existing files: Identify VSD, VSDX, and VDX files, open a representative sample in the intended product, and inspect the results and editability.
- Compare total subscription cost: Use current regional pricing, seat counts, and billing terms for equivalent plans.
