For timed captions or subtitles on an HTML video, use WebVTT by default: it is designed for external text tracks connected through HTML’s <track> element. Choose SRT when a platform or editing workflow asks for it, and LRC when you need synchronized lyrics in a player that supports the LRC variant you have.

What each format is designed to do

LRC: timed song lyrics

LRC is a text-based sidecar format for synchronizing lyrics with audio. In its commonly described simple form, a timestamp precedes each lyric line; optional tags can carry song metadata. Enhanced LRC variants can timestamp individual words. LRC is not a single guarantee of identical behavior across players, so check the target player’s supported variant rather than assuming that any file ending in .lrc will work.

SRT: subtitle exchange

SRT, or SubRip, is a practical subtitle format organized as numbered, timed blocks separated by blank lines. It is widely encountered in subtitle workflows, but the sources here do not establish one normative SRT specification that every product follows. Treat the destination platform’s accepted syntax and conventions as authoritative.

WebVTT: text tracks for web video

WebVTT means Web Video Text Tracks. It is intended for external text tracks used with HTML’s <track> element. The W3C specification covers subtitles and captions as well as chapters and time-aligned metadata, and defines cue timing and browser-oriented presentation features. Its current publication is a Candidate Recommendation Draft dated 20 May 2026, not a final W3C Recommendation; the document describes itself as work in progress that could be updated, replaced, or obsoleted. Check the current W3C WebVTT specification and status before relying on a detail that may change.

Why WebVTT is the usual choice for HTML video

The decisive distinction is the integration point. WebVTT is specifically designed to provide external text tracks to HTML video through <track>. Its cue model also supports start and end times, cue identifiers, and presentation settings such as positioning, alignment, size, writing direction, and cue regions. These features can matter when text must be readable and positioned over video.

WebVTT cues have a start time and an end time. Start times are ordered, while cues may overlap. The data kind—such as captions or subtitles—comes from the context in which the track is used; a single WebVTT file must not mix data kinds. A WebVTT file begins with the WEBVTT signature. The W3C draft specifies UTF-8 and the MIME type text/vtt.

Those capabilities do not mean every browser or player implements every feature identically. Check the specific cue settings and track behavior your site depends on. The Library of Congress WebVTT format description provides additional format context.

When to keep or deliver SRT instead

If an editor, publishing system, or video service explicitly requests SRT, use the requested format for that handoff rather than assuming WebVTT is an accepted substitute. The formats are related: W3C’s WebVTT acknowledgements credit the SubRip community and state that the SRT file format was used as the basis for WebVTT. That lineage does not make their syntax or feature support interchangeable.

Before uploading an SRT file, check the receiving product’s requirements for file type, encoding, time syntax, and supported features. The Library of Congress’s SRT format description notes the format’s practical structure and its reliance on secondary documentation for some conventions; there is no single normative SRT specification established here.

When LRC is the right fit

Choose LRC when your goal is to display synchronized lyrics alongside a song and the intended music player supports the relevant LRC form. A line-timed file and an enhanced word-timed file are not interchangeable in every player. Confirm support for the variant, timestamp conventions, and any metadata tags you plan to use. The LRC format overview is community edited, so it is useful for orientation but not a formal interoperability guarantee.

Before you publish a timed-text file

  • Identify the job: HTML video captions or subtitles point to WebVTT; a platform-requested subtitle upload points to that platform’s specified format; synchronized song lyrics point to LRC if the player supports it.
  • Check the receiver: A plausible-looking file is not proof that a platform accepts its extension, encoding, syntax, or optional features.
  • Validate the features you use: For WebVTT, confirm support for the cue settings and track behavior your page needs. For SRT, follow the product’s conventions. For LRC, confirm simple or enhanced timing support.
  • Use the current specification where relevant: W3C’s WebVTT document is a draft whose status can change, so recheck it when implementation depends on a particular rule.
