HBM is the better fit for bandwidth-bound AI inference, while LPDDR5X is the better fit for adding large, energy-efficient system capacity. They are not interchangeable memories with one universal winner. HBM sits next to an accelerator and feeds it at very high local bandwidth; LPDDR5X is usually attached to a CPU or unified-memory system and can hold much more data at lower subsystem power. Long-context and high-concurrency services often use both: weights and hot working data in HBM, with overflow KV cache in LPDDR5X.
The figures are platform-specific. For example, NVIDIA specifies up to 500 GB/s for Grace LPDDR5X, whereas its H100 SXM5 example provides more than 3 TB/s from 80 GB of HBM3. Those are different attachment points and system designs, not a controlled benchmark. Capacity, latency, software support, power, and cost must be evaluated together.
What is the difference between LPDDR5X and HBM?
LPDDR5X is a low-power DRAM technology normally placed close to a CPU or integrated into a system-on-chip. HBM is a stack of DRAM dies connected through a very wide interface and packaged close to an AI accelerator. The physical location determines how the processor reaches the data: an accelerator can access local HBM directly, while data in CPU-attached LPDDR5X may cross a coherent interconnect, PCIe-class link, or another system fabric.
| Comparison point | HBM | LPDDR5X |
|---|---|---|
| Typical attachment | Accelerator-local, on-package or immediately adjacent | CPU-attached or unified system memory |
| Primary advantage | Very high bandwidth and low data-movement distance for accelerator workloads | Large capacity with relatively low memory-subsystem power |
| Representative published configuration | H100 SXM5: 80 GB HBM3 and more than 3 TB/s; H100 PCIe: 80 GB HBM2e and more than 2 TB/s (NVIDIA Hopper Architecture In-Depth) | Grace: up to 960 GB ECC LPDDR5X and up to 500 GB/s (NVIDIA Grace CPU) |
| Best inference role | Model weights, activations, attention work, and other bandwidth-sensitive hot data | Expanded capacity for large KV caches, long context, and many concurrent sessions |
| Upgradeability | Normally integrated into the accelerator package or board design | Usually soldered or package-integrated; not a plug-in DIMM upgrade |
Neither label alone tells you the performance of a complete server. A quoted bandwidth can be aggregate across a device, peak rather than sustained, or available only to a particular processor. Always record which chip owns the memory, which interface carries requests, and whether the number is per accelerator, per node, or per rack.

Is LPDDR5X faster than HBM for AI inference?
No, not for accelerator-local bandwidth. HBM is designed to keep a GPU or other accelerator supplied with data. NVIDIA lists more than 3 TB/s for the 80 GB HBM3 subsystem in an H100 SXM5 and more than 2 TB/s for the 80 GB HBM2e subsystem in an H100 PCIe. Grace LPDDR5X is specified at up to 500 GB/s on the CPU side. A GPU using CPU-attached LPDDR5X also pays the latency and transfer cost of the system interconnect, so the 500 GB/s figure cannot be treated as equivalent to 500 GB/s of local accelerator HBM.
Why HBM wins bandwidth-sensitive work
Transformer inference repeatedly streams weights and intermediate tensors. When those transfers are served from HBM beside the accelerator, the accelerator avoids a longer trip through host memory and an external fabric. This is particularly important for high-throughput batching, where arithmetic units can otherwise wait for memory. HBM capacity is limited, but the bandwidth available per accelerator is its defining strength.
When LPDDR5X can improve observed performance
LPDDR5X can make a service faster overall when the alternative is refusing requests, shrinking context windows, or constantly evicting and reloading cache data because accelerator memory is full. In that situation, extra capacity can raise utilization and reduce queueing even though each access to LPDDR5X is slower than an HBM access. The result depends on cache placement, access locality, interconnect saturation, batching policy, and software support; peak memory bandwidth is not an inference-throughput guarantee.

Which has more capacity?
At the system level, LPDDR5X can provide substantially more capacity than the HBM attached to one accelerator. NVIDIA documents up to 960 GB of server-class ECC LPDDR5X for Grace. In the same design discussion, a four-site HBM2e alternative is described as limited to 64 GB, one-eighth of that maximum LPDDR5X capacity. Those are Grace configuration comparisons, not intrinsic capacity ceilings for every LPDDR5X or HBM product.

Rack-scale example: separate tiers by design
NVIDIA’s GB300 NVL72 specification lists 20 TB of GPU memory at up to 576 TB/s alongside 17 TB of CPU LPDDR5X memory at 14 TB/s. The figures show why modern systems can use two tiers rather than choosing one technology. GPU memory holds the data that needs extreme bandwidth; CPU memory supplies a much larger pool for less latency-sensitive state. Confirm the target configuration and availability before treating this as a procurement option.
Unified-memory workstation example
NVIDIA’s DGX Spark specification lists 64 GB or 128 GB of coherent unified LPDDR5X system memory at 273 GB/s, with a GB10 system TDP of 140 W. This is a workstation-class example, not a direct HBM comparison. Unified addressing can simplify programming, but it does not turn LPDDR5X into accelerator-local HBM.
Does LPDDR5X use less power than HBM?
LPDDR5X is optimized for low I/O power, but the evidence does not establish a universal LPDDR5X-versus-HBM power-per-bit ratio. NVIDIA’s Grace Performance Tuning Guide reports up to 500 GB/s from the LPDDR5X subsystem in about 16 W. NVIDIA also says Grace LPDDR5X requires one-eighth the power per gigabyte of an eight-channel DDR5 design. Both statements compare LPDDR5X with DDR5 in a specific Grace architecture; they are not a blanket claim that LPDDR5X always consumes one-eighth the power of HBM.

For inference, separate three measurements:
- Memory-device power: energy used by DRAM chips and their interfaces.
- System power: accelerator, CPU, fabric, voltage regulation, cooling, and memory together.
- Energy per generated token: total energy divided by useful output, which changes with batch size, sequence length, cache reuse, precision, and accelerator utilization.
Moving data from LPDDR5X to an accelerator can consume fabric and link power. Conversely, keeping a large cache in LPDDR5X can prevent repeated recomputation or host-storage traffic. Measure the complete data path rather than selecting a memory technology from a device-power number alone.

Which costs less: LPDDR5X or HBM?
There is no current, matched public price table that supports a universal cost-per-gigabyte answer. NVIDIA’s Grace engineering comparison says a four-site HBM2e alternative would cost more than three times as much per gigabyte as DDR5 or LPDDR5X in that design. That is a vendor architecture comparison, not a current spot price, procurement quote, geography-specific figure, or guaranteed ratio for another generation.
System cost also includes package design, board routing, cooling, yield, memory controllers, interconnects, software, serviceability, and the cost of unused capacity. HBM can be cheaper per generated token when its bandwidth keeps expensive accelerators busy. LPDDR5X can be cheaper at the capacity tier when buying enough HBM to hold every weight and cache byte would be uneconomic. Compare complete configurations at the same model, precision, context length, throughput target, and reliability requirement.
How AI inference uses HBM and LPDDR5X together
Keep bandwidth-sensitive data in HBM
Place model weights, frequently reused attention data, activations, and other hot tensors in accelerator-local HBM when the accelerator can address it directly. Quantization and tensor partitioning can increase the useful model size within that tier, but they do not remove the bandwidth advantage of HBM for data that is accessed every token.

Autoregressive serving stores keys and values for every layer and token already processed. The KV cache grows with context length, number of sequences, layers, hidden dimensions, precision, and concurrency. Once it exceeds HBM, a CPU-attached LPDDR5X tier can hold colder pages or entire sessions, provided the runtime supports paging, prefetching, coherence, or explicit transfers efficiently.

Interpret the Micron result correctly
Micron’s 2026 white paper describes a specific setup in which large KV caches were offloaded to 1.5 TB of CPU-attached memory using 192 GB LPDDR5X SOCAMM2 modules. Micron reports up to 98% lower time to first token for long-context real-time inference and a 2X larger concurrent request batch size for batched inference. These are vendor-published, configuration-specific results with an “up to” qualifier, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for every model, runtime, or interconnect.
The practical lesson is conditional: cache offload can improve service capacity when HBM exhaustion is the bottleneck. It cannot make every cache access as fast as HBM, and poor prefetching or a saturated link can erase the benefit.
Can LPDDR5X replace HBM?
Only for workloads and architectures that do not require HBM-level local bandwidth. Replacing HBM with LPDDR5X in a bandwidth-bound accelerator would usually reduce the data rate available to the compute engines and add a longer access path. Calling LPDDR5X an HBM replacement without specifying the processor, interconnect, model, and serving target is therefore misleading.

- The processor is designed around coherent or unified LPDDR5X access rather than assuming local HBM.
- Model size, context, and concurrency prioritize capacity over maximum tokens per second.
- The workload is edge, workstation, or CPU-centric inference where a large low-power pool is more useful than a small accelerator-local pool.
- The software stack can place hot and cold data deliberately and tolerate the latency of remote accesses.

HBM remains essential when
- High-throughput batching keeps the accelerator saturated with weight and activation traffic.
- The model’s hot working set fits in HBM and remote-memory latency would stall kernels.
- The interconnect between CPU memory and accelerator cannot sustain the required traffic.
- The software stack has no tested cache-offload or unified-memory policy.

How to choose a memory tier for an inference system
Choose an HBM-first design for throughput
Use HBM as the primary working tier when your target is maximum tokens per second, large batch sizes, or predictable accelerator utilization. Size it for the model weights plus the hot activation and cache footprint. If that working set does not fit, measure the penalty of paging before assuming that adding remote memory will preserve throughput.
Choose LPDDR5X capacity for long context and concurrency
Prioritize a large LPDDR5X pool when sessions have very long contexts, many users remain active simultaneously, or the cost of expanding HBM is disproportionate to the number of cache bytes that are cold. The serving stack must expose controls for cache placement, eviction, prefetching, and admission; otherwise extra capacity may simply become slow memory.
Use a two-tier design when both constraints matter
Keep hot model and attention data in HBM, reserve LPDDR5X for colder KV-cache pages and overflow, and define a policy for promotion and eviction. Measure first-token latency separately from decode throughput: cache misses can hurt the former, while sustained token generation may remain accelerator-bound.
Implementation checklist before deployment
- Define the target: record model, precision, context length, concurrent sessions, batch policy, first-token latency, decode throughput, and power limit.
- Map the hierarchy: document which processor owns each memory tier and the exact path between accelerator, CPU, fabric, and storage.
- Calculate the footprint: include weights, activations, KV cache at peak sequence length, runtime workspace, and replication across devices.
- Set placement rules: pin frequently reused data in HBM and identify which cache pages may reside in LPDDR5X.
- Validate software support: test coherent access, explicit DMA, paging, prefetch, eviction, NUMA affinity, and failure recovery in the actual runtime.
- Benchmark matched conditions: use the same model, precision, prompt distribution, context, concurrency, software version, and power measurement for each configuration.
- Measure tail behavior: collect p50, p95, and p99 first-token and per-token latency, cache-miss rates, link utilization, accelerator utilization, and energy per token.
- Plan serviceability: verify that memory is integrated, supported by the board firmware, covered by error correction where required, and replaceable only through the platform’s service process.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing unlike bandwidth numbers: label each figure as peak or sustained and as per chip, device, node, or rack. State whether it is local HBM bandwidth or CPU-memory bandwidth.
- Turning capacity into speed: more LPDDR5X capacity prevents out-of-memory failures but does not provide HBM-equivalent latency or bandwidth.
- Using vendor results as universal guarantees: the Micron KV-cache figures apply to the stated 1.5 TB and 192 GB-module setup and retain the “up to” qualification.
- Quoting the Grace cost ratio as a market price: the more-than-three-times figure is a design comparison against a hypothetical four-site HBM2e alternative, not a current procurement quote.
- Ignoring data movement: include interconnect power and contention when cache pages move between LPDDR5X and an accelerator.
- Assuming an upgrade path: LPDDR5X and HBM are generally integrated technologies. Confirm compatibility before selecting a board or module; a generic memory-module purchase will not convert an HBM system to LPDDR5X.
- Skipping reliability details: check ECC coverage, page retirement, telemetry, thermal limits, and what happens to in-flight requests after a memory or link error.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The published specifications establish clear roles: HBM offers much higher accelerator-local bandwidth, while LPDDR5X can offer a larger capacity pool at favorable subsystem power. They do not establish a single LPDDR5X-versus-HBM winner, a universal power-per-bit ratio, or a current matched price. No controlled independent benchmark covering identical model, precision, context, batch, software, and power conditions establishes that an LPDDR5X-only system matches an HBM-only system. Treat every decision as a platform and workload evaluation, then validate it with measurements from the intended deployment.
