Yes, catalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion can be made less dependent on extreme pressure, but there is no universal pressure-free recipe. The clearest evidence comes from electrochemical CO2 reduction, where increasing CO2 partial pressure can improve coverage of the catalyst surface, suppress competing hydrogen evolution, and raise reaction rates or carbon-conversion efficiency. Those benefits depend on the catalyst, temperature, electrolyte, applied potential, reactor design, and operating stability.

“Taking the pressure off” is therefore an engineering objective rather than a single breakthrough. A catalyst that performs well near ambient conditions, a reactor that supplies CO2 efficiently, and controls that prevent hydrogen production may deliver useful conversion at lower pressure. A weak catalyst may remain weak even at 30 bar and 100 °C, while a high-pressure architecture may simplify integration with another industrial process without eliminating pressure altogether.

Can CO2 conversion work at lower pressure?

It can, especially in electrochemical systems, but lower pressure changes the chemical environment at the catalyst. CO2 partial pressure affects how much reactant reaches and remains near an electrode. At higher pressure, more CO2 can occupy the catalyst surface and participate in intermediate-forming steps. The same shift can reduce the relative opportunity for hydrogen evolution, an unwanted reaction that competes for electrons and active sites. A review in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A describes these mechanisms and the associated performance trends: “Progress and prospects of high-pressure CO2 electrocatalytic reduction”.

Reducing pressure removes some equipment and compression demands, but it can also lower CO2 availability at the surface and make hydrogen evolution more competitive. The result is a trade-off, not a rule that either high or low pressure is always superior. Pressure must be selected together with catalyst composition, electrolyte, temperature, potential, mass transfer, and the desired product.

What pressure changes on an electrode

  • Surface coverage: More CO2 near the electrode can increase the probability that a carbon-containing intermediate forms instead of a hydrogen intermediate.
  • Selectivity: Suppressing hydrogen evolution can increase the fraction of current used for CO2 reduction, although the products still depend on the catalyst and potential.
  • Rate: Greater reactant availability can support higher partial currents or overall reaction rates, provided transport through the electrolyte and electrode is not limiting.
  • Energy and hardware: Pressurization requires pressure-rated cells, seals, controls, and compression work. The available evidence does not establish a general capital or operating-cost saving from lowering pressure, so any economic claim must be made for a defined process.

What the 2025 catalyst-screening study actually demonstrated

A 2025 study, “Screening of Various Catalysts for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction at Elevated Temperatures and Pressures”, tested 20 metal catalysts across selected temperature–pressure combinations reaching 30 bar and 100 °C. Its main comparison used one applied potential and a 0.1 M KHCO3 aqueous electrolyte, so the results are a map of those conditions rather than a universal ranking of catalyst families.

Near-100% Faradaic efficiency was conditional

Under the study’s particular potential, electrolyte, temperature, and pressure, selected catalysts that had average activity at ambient conditions reached near-100% Faradaic efficiency for CO2 reduction at 30 bar. Faradaic efficiency is the share of electrical charge that produces the measured CO2-reduction product rather than another reaction. “Near 100%” in this report is therefore a study-specific result, not a general technology benchmark or a guarantee that the same catalyst will achieve that value in another cell.

Pressure and heat did not rescue every catalyst

The same comparison found that catalysts performing poorly at ambient conditions remained at no more than 30% CO2-reduction Faradaic efficiency in the relevant elevated-condition tests. This is the practical warning behind the headline: pressure can reveal or amplify useful behavior in a suitable catalyst, but it does not turn every metal into a selective CO2-conversion catalyst.

Temperature can make pressure more important

Pressure and temperature interacted rather than acting as independent performance switches. Elevated temperature with insufficient pressure could worsen selectivity, and the authors flagged catalyst instability under some high-temperature, low-pressure conditions. A process that lowers pressure while raising temperature may therefore lose more selectivity than it gains in thermal throughput. The study calls for further work that varies applied potential, electrolyte, pressure, and temperature together; its limited set of combinations cannot identify an optimum for every catalyst or product.

Why hydrogen evolution is central to the pressure decision

In aqueous electrochemical cells, the electrode can reduce water or protons to hydrogen as well as reduce CO2. Both reactions draw on the same electrical current, so hydrogen production lowers the Faradaic efficiency available for carbon products. Raising CO2 partial pressure can increase the local concentration of the carbon reactant and reduce hydrogen’s relative competitive advantage. Lowering pressure may reverse that balance unless the electrode, electrolyte, potential, and transport design compensate.

Do not treat selectivity as a pressure-only number

A reported Faradaic efficiency always belongs to a defined operating point. Changing the potential can change which intermediates are stabilized; changing electrolyte concentration or composition can change conductivity and local pH; changing temperature can alter reaction kinetics and catalyst stability. A pressure comparison is meaningful only when these other variables are reported and controlled. The 2025 screening study’s use of one potential and one electrolyte is why its results should guide experiments, not substitute for a full process map.

How electrochemical and thermocatalytic routes differ

A 2023 review, “Reduction of CO2 to chemicals and Fuels: Thermocatalysis versus electrocatalysis,” describes electrocatalysis as operating at lower temperature and pressure than thermocatalysis in general. That comparison does not mean every electrochemical reactor is low pressure, nor that thermocatalysis cannot be engineered for moderate conditions. It highlights different maturity and stability challenges.

Comparison axis Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction Thermocatalytic conversion
Typical temperature and pressure relationship The review characterizes it as lower than thermocatalysis overall; exact ranges vary by chemistry and reactor. Generally higher than electrocatalysis in the review-level comparison; a universal operating range is not established here.
Energy input Electrical potential drives the reaction and also determines product selectivity. Heat and a catalytic surface drive the reaction; pressure can influence equilibrium and surface coverage.
Key selectivity issue Competing hydrogen evolution and potential-dependent product pathways. Thermal reaction pathways, equilibrium constraints, and catalyst stability.
Maturity Promising lower-temperature/pressure operation, but the review describes the field as less mature and in need of more effective, stable electrocatalysts. More established in some industrial contexts, but higher-temperature and pressure equipment can be demanding.
Evidence relevant to lowering pressure High-pressure studies directly test how CO2 availability changes electrochemical performance. The supplied evidence does not establish a specific low-pressure thermocatalytic catalyst or process.

For a project deciding between routes, compare not just nominal pressure but also product distribution, current or thermal efficiency, catalyst lifetime, electrolyte management, separation duty, and the maturity of scale-up evidence. A lower operating pressure is valuable only if the reactor still delivers stable, selective conversion at the required throughput.

What reactor designs can reduce pressure dependence?

Pressure can be addressed through process integration as well as catalyst chemistry. One 2025 Chem Catalysis report describes a differential-pressure, zero-gap CO2 electrolysis study operating at 40 bar(g) differential pressure: “Differential pressure CO2 electrolysis opens the way for direct coupling to industrial processes.” The “g” denotes gauge pressure relative to the surrounding pressure, and the figure is a reported operating condition for that demonstration.

Differential pressure can let a reactor interface directly with a pressurized upstream or downstream process while maintaining a controlled pressure difference across the cell. It should not be interpreted as proof that pressure has been eliminated, that every electrolysis stack can tolerate the same differential, or that the architecture is already an industrial standard. It is evidence that reactor configuration can change where pressure is applied and how it is integrated.

Design questions before lowering pressure

  • Can the electrode receive enough CO2 at the proposed pressure and flow rate?
  • Will the lower pressure increase hydrogen evolution at the chosen potential?
  • Does the catalyst remain chemically and mechanically stable at the intended temperature?
  • Can seals, membranes, current collectors, and fluid channels tolerate the pressure difference and thermal cycling?
  • How will unconverted CO2, hydrogen, and product gases be separated and recycled?
  • Does the pressure level match the adjacent process, or will compression be required before or after electrolysis?

A practical method for testing a lower-pressure operating window

Lowering pressure should be treated as a controlled experiment, not a single set-point change. The following sequence keeps catalyst, transport, and safety effects distinguishable.

  1. Define the product and metric. Choose the target carbon product and record Faradaic efficiency, partial current density or reaction rate, product distribution, energy use, and catalyst stability. A high Faradaic efficiency with negligible throughput is not a complete process result.
  2. Establish a reference point. Record the catalyst, electrode loading, electrolyte, applied potential, temperature, CO2 flow, and pressure at a stable baseline. Without this information, a later pressure change cannot be separated from a change in mass transfer or wetting.
  3. Step pressure down while holding other variables. Use several pressure points rather than comparing only “high” and “ambient.” At each point, wait for steady operation and measure both carbon products and hydrogen.
  4. Check temperature–pressure interaction. Repeat the pressure series at the intended temperatures. The 2025 screening results show why a high-temperature, low-pressure point can have worse selectivity or stability than expected.
  5. Map potential and electrolyte after the pressure screen. The screening study used one potential and 0.1 M KHCO3; different values may change the apparent pressure optimum. Vary them only after the basic pressure response is understood so the experiment remains interpretable.
  6. Run durability tests. Inspect product selectivity, cell voltage, pressure drop, membrane condition, and catalyst composition over time. A short high-selectivity measurement does not establish a stable operating window.
  7. Compare the complete process. Include compression, pumping, heating or cooling, gas recycle, product separation, and safety systems. The lowest cell pressure may not minimize total process energy if it requires additional compression elsewhere.

Common mistakes when interpreting “pressure reduction”

Assuming ambient pressure is automatically optimal

Ambient operation reduces pressure-rated hardware, but it can lower CO2 surface coverage and increase hydrogen competition. Whether that trade is favorable must be measured for the selected catalyst and product.

Transferring one catalyst’s result to another

The 20-catalyst screen showed wide dependence on the metal. Near-100% Faradaic efficiency for selected catalysts at 30 bar cannot be used as an expected value for a different catalyst, electrolyte, potential, or reactor.

Equating Faradaic efficiency with commercial readiness

Faradaic efficiency says how charge was allocated during the reported test. It does not by itself establish electrode lifetime, product concentration, separation cost, stack scale, safety, or industrial economics.

Ignoring instability at combined extremes

High temperature and low pressure can be a particularly difficult combination. Catalyst restructuring, membrane damage, drying, flooding, or changing local chemistry may appear only during extended operation, which is why durability belongs in the pressure decision.

What “taking the pressure off” means in practice

The strongest interpretation is not “run every CO2 catalyst at ambient pressure.” It is to reduce unnecessary pressurization while preserving carbon selectivity, reaction rate, and stability. For some systems, that may mean selecting a catalyst that performs adequately at lower pressure. For others, it may mean moderate pressurization that suppresses hydrogen evolution, a differential-pressure cell that matches an existing process, or a different temperature and electrolyte combination.

Current evidence supports a development strategy built around measured operating windows. High pressure can improve electrochemical CO2 reduction by increasing reactant availability and changing competition at the surface, yet the 2025 catalyst screen also shows clear limits: weak catalysts stayed weak, and temperature without sufficient pressure could damage selectivity. Electrocatalysis offers a lower-temperature and lower-pressure direction than thermocatalysis in the review-level comparison, but it remains less mature and needs catalysts and reactors that stay effective over time.

The useful question for a real project is therefore: What is the lowest pressure at which this catalyst, electrode, electrolyte, potential, and reactor deliver the required product rate and stability? Answering that question with a pressure–temperature–potential map is more defensible than treating any single bar value as a universal target.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 30 bar the pressure required for electrochemical CO₂ reduction?

No. Thirty bar was the upper pressure in a 2025 study that screened 20 metal catalysts, and near-100% Faradaic efficiency was reported only for selected catalysts under that study’s specific potential, 0.1 M KHCO₃ electrolyte, and other test conditions. It is not a universal requirement or target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does 40 bar(g) mean in the differential-pressure reactor report?

It means a 40-bar pressure difference measured relative to the surrounding pressure. The value came from one zero-gap CO₂ electrolysis demonstration and describes that reactor’s operating condition, not proof that pressure can be removed or that the design is industrially established.

Can I buy a household device that performs this type of CO₂ conversion?

No consumer product is established by the cited evidence. High-pressure electrochemical cells and CO₂ electrolysis equipment are specialized laboratory or process hardware; household CO₂ monitors and capture devices do not catalytically convert CO₂.

Why can raising temperature make a lower-pressure test worse?

Temperature changes reaction rates, gas solubility, surface intermediates, and catalyst stability. The 2025 screening study specifically reported that elevated temperature with insufficient pressure could worsen selectivity and identified instability under some high-temperature, low-pressure conditions.
