No Australian plant is fireproof. The safest approach for a bushfire-prone property is to combine locally suitable native plants with separation, low-fuel garden design and rigorous maintenance. Fire authorities describe relative flammability: a healthy plant with moist, coarse foliage and little retained dead material may ignite less readily or burn less intensely, but drought, wind and an extreme fire can make any vegetation burn.

Choose plants by their measurable traits, mature size and position around the house—not by a “fire-resistant” label or a common name. The Country Fire Authority (CFA) says, “There are no ‘fireproof’ plants” and that “the location and arrangement of plants has a greater effect on bushfire risk than plant choice” (CFA, Choosing suitable plants, accessed 13 October 2026).

What “fire-resistant” means in an Australian garden

In this context, “fire-resistant” is shorthand for relatively lower flammability under particular conditions. It does not mean a plant will survive a bushfire, stop flames, protect a building or remain safe when it has dried out. The CFA notes that all plants can burn under extreme conditions, while drought and an approaching fire increase flammability. A plant that appears safe in a wet spring may carry very different risk after a hot, dry summer.

Many Australian natives are adapted to fire, and some need fire to reproduce or remain healthy. That ecological adaptation does not automatically make a species suitable beside a house. A plant may resprout after a fire yet still provide intense fuel during the event. Use the term “lower-flammability” only as a qualified, site-specific description.

Why layout matters more than a species list

Vegetation becomes hazardous when it forms a continuous path for heat and flame. The first design task is therefore to create breaks and reduce fuel close to buildings.

Keep the immediate building edge simple

Maintain a relatively clear strip around walls, doors, vents and decks. Avoid dense beds directly beneath windows, where flames or embers can enter, and keep combustible mulch, stored timber, outdoor furniture and dry pots away from vulnerable openings. A low-growing, widely spaced planting is easier to inspect and water than a continuous hedge.

Break up horizontal and vertical fuel

Separate lawn, garden beds, shrubs and trees with paths, gravel, paving or other low-fuel surfaces. Do not allow shrubs to touch one another or bridge from groundcover to tree branches. Prune low branches so a surface fire cannot climb into a crown, and avoid dense vegetation beneath trees. NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) homeowner guidance says tree crowns should be 2 to 5 metres apart in its maintenance context; that is NSW advice, not a universal spacing rule for every Australian site.

Plan for ember attack

Embers can travel ahead of the fire front and lodge in leaf litter, gutters, roof valleys, mulch and dense foliage. A plant with low oils may still create dangerous fine fuel if it retains dead leaves beside a wall. Design for inspection and cleaning, not just for the appearance of a green screen.

Traits to screen when comparing native plants

Compare candidates using the following characteristics. They are screening axes rather than a national rating system, and the same genus can contain species with different behaviour.

Trait Generally preferable near buildings Risk requiring caution
Leaf texture Coarse or broad leaves with relatively high moisture Abundant fine, needle-like or highly divided foliage that dries quickly
Branching and density Open structure that allows inspection and air movement Dense, continuous branching that traps dry material
Oils, waxes and resins Low aromatic-oil, wax and resin content Strongly aromatic foliage or visibly resinous or waxy surfaces
Dead material Little retained dead leaf, twig or bark material Persistent loose bark, dead flower heads or fine litter beneath the plant
Bark Smooth bark or bark that does not accumulate loose ribbons near structures Loose, fibrous or ribbon-like bark that can carry embers
Water status Healthy growth that can be kept adequately hydrated for the local climate Plants that routinely become brittle and dry in summer or during drought
Mature form Low or moderate height that does not create ladder fuels Large shrubs or trees capable of linking ground fuel to crowns or roofs
Site fit Locally indigenous or demonstrably suited to soil, rainfall and exposure Species needing excessive irrigation, invading natural areas or breaching council controls

Confirm the scientific name, mature height and spread with a local native nursery or authoritative flora reference. Common names can refer to several unrelated plants, and flammability can vary within a broad group.

CFA Victorian boundary windbreak examples

A CFA rural garden design uses Lily Pilly and River Oak as lower-flammability boundary windbreak examples. The design keeps grass beneath the windbreak short and waters it in summer. The lesson is the combination of plant form, separation and maintenance—not a guarantee that every Lily Pilly or River Oak cultivar is safe on every site. Check the exact species and its eventual canopy before planting near a building.

CFA entry-bed succulents

The same CFA design shows drought-tolerant, low-growing succulents in entry beds: Tree Aeonium, Swans Neck Agave, Pig’s Ears, Hen and Chickens, Purple Heart, Blue Chalk Sticks and Jelly Beans. They appear as examples within a managed Victorian layout, where their low growth and water-holding leaves can reduce fine fuel. They still need spacing, removal of dead leaves and assessment for frost, heat, spread and local weed restrictions.

CFA indigenous garden and Kangaroo Grass

A CFA indigenous garden case study selects plants for high moisture, low growth and very little accumulation of highly flammable dead material. It identifies Kangaroo Grass as a feature that can be burned to remove dead material and kept green over summer. Do not interpret that case note as a general instruction to burn your garden. Planned burning can require permits, trained personnel, suitable weather and detailed risk controls; obtain advice from the relevant fire authority before considering it.

Plants and features that need extra caution

The CFA cautions against plants with high oils, waxes or resins and gives eucalypts, rosemary and lavender as examples to avoid or place carefully. This is a broad caution, not proof that every native plant in a large group has identical flammability. A eucalypt’s mature height, loose bark, canopy position and distance from a house may matter as much as its species identity. Aromatic herbs can be unsuitable immediately beside windows even when they are useful elsewhere in the garden.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also treat any plant as higher risk when it carries fine dead stems, sheds bark into gutters, forms a dense hedge, dries markedly in summer or sits beneath a tree canopy. Remove or relocate a plant if its maintenance burden means dead material is routinely left in place.

A step-by-step method for selecting plants

  1. Map the site. Mark the house, decks, windows, doors, tanks, sheds, access paths, slopes, prevailing wind exposure and existing trees. Note which areas are inside the mapped bushfire-prone zone and any designated defendable-space or construction requirements.
  2. Set a planting role. Decide whether you need a boundary windbreak, shade tree, privacy screen, erosion control, groundcover or entry planting. A plant appropriate for a distant boundary may be wrong beside a window.
  3. Build a local candidate list. Ask a local indigenous nursery, council environment officer or qualified landscape professional for species that suit your soil, rainfall, frost, salt exposure and summer conditions. Request scientific names and mature dimensions.
  4. Screen physical traits. Examine foliage texture, branching density, oils, bark, litter and likely summer moisture. Reject candidates that create a continuous hedge, retain large amounts of fine dead material or can readily form ladder fuels in the proposed position.
  5. Check mature size and clearance. Use the plant’s mature height and spread, not its nursery-pot size. Allow room for pruning, gutter cleaning, vehicle access and inspection. Keep crowns separated according to local guidance and site-specific advice.
  6. Design fuel breaks. Insert paths, paving, gravel, low-fuel lawn or other non-continuous surfaces between planting zones. Keep beds out from under windows and away from vents where practical.
  7. Verify rules before purchase. Check council vegetation controls, heritage or biodiversity overlays, water restrictions, bushfire planning conditions and any requirements attached to a building approval. NSW RFS states that its current legislated Planning for Bush Fire Protection version was adopted on 1 March 2020 and that a five-year review is underway; confirm the current rule with RFS or your council rather than relying on an old document.
  8. Install for maintenance. Use spacing that permits hand removal of leaf litter and safe pruning. Irrigate during establishment and drought when feasible, while following local water rules. Do not hide dry mulch or dead foliage beneath dense canopies.

Maintenance that changes the risk profile

Plant selection cannot compensate for neglected fuel. Put recurring tasks on a seasonal schedule:

  • Keep grass short, particularly beneath boundary plantings and around access routes.
  • Remove fine dead leaves, twigs, spent flower stems and loose bark from beds, paths, roof valleys and gutters.
  • Prune low branches and water-stressed growth where doing so is safe and horticulturally appropriate.
  • Separate tree crowns and prevent shrubs from touching trunks, fences, eaves or one another.
  • Inspect after heatwaves and drought; a normally moist plant may become highly flammable when desiccated.
  • Keep gates, driveways and firefighting access clear of overhanging or fallen vegetation.
  • Dispose of green waste promptly rather than stacking it beside the house.

Healthy, adequately watered plants are generally less prone to rapid ignition than drought-stressed plants, but watering is not a guarantee and may be restricted during severe conditions. Never postpone evacuation or official action to defend a garden.

How location changes the same plant’s suitability

Position What to prioritise Typical design response
Immediately beside walls, windows or vents Low height, sparse arrangement, minimal litter and easy inspection Use small, widely spaced plants and a low-fuel surface; avoid dense hedges and overhanging branches
Entry path and driveway Clear access, low growth and no obstruction to doors or vehicles Use separated beds with paving or gravel breaks; remove dead succulent leaves
Boundary or windbreak Canopy separation, short grass below and controlled mature spread Consider the CFA Lily Pilly/River Oak example only after local verification; do not create a continuous wall of vegetation
Under existing trees Low ladder-fuel potential and regular litter removal Thin or relocate shrubs, prune lower limbs and keep a maintainable fuel break
Outer acreage or habitat zone Ecological fit balanced with defendable-space requirements Retain appropriate native habitat where rules allow, while separating it from structures and maintaining access

Local advice, regulation and professional assessment

Australia-wide advice cannot specify one “best” native plant list because rainfall, soils, drought patterns, fire weather, local ecosystems and planning rules differ. CFA material is Victorian guidance; NSW RFS material applies to NSW. Other states and territories have their own fire authorities and planning frameworks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a complex, steep, heavily vegetated or high-risk property, seek site-specific advice from an appropriately qualified local landscape professional, arborist or bushfire practitioner. Ask them to assess existing trees, canopy separation, access, slope, likely ember paths, defendable space and the mature form of proposed plants. A nursery can help with identity and growing conditions, but it cannot replace a bushfire assessment.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“Native” is treated as a safety rating

Why it fails: Native species can contain oils, carry loose bark or become very dry. Correction: evaluate the plant’s traits and position, then confirm the scientific name and mature form.

A green hedge is planted against the house

Why it fails: continuous foliage and dead material can connect surface fire to windows, eaves and roof spaces. Correction: break up the hedge, move it away from openings and substitute low, separated planting where necessary.

Small nursery size is mistaken for permanent size

Why it fails: a young tree or shrub can eventually create ladder fuels or overhang the roof. Correction: design from mature height and spread, allowing for pruning and access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Summer conditions are ignored

Why it fails: drought-stressed foliage and accumulated litter burn more readily. Correction: inspect after dry periods, irrigate where lawful and feasible, remove dead material and revise plants that cannot be maintained.

Garden preparation replaces a survival plan

Why it fails: landscaping does not stop a fire front or ember attack. Correction: follow your state fire authority’s warnings and bushfire survival guidance. CFA emphasises that leaving early on Extreme and Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating days is safest.

A practical decision checklist

Before ordering any plant, confirm all of the following:

  • Its scientific name, mature height and mature spread are known.
  • It is suited to the site’s climate, soil, slope and water availability.
  • Its foliage is not strongly oily, waxy or resinous for the proposed location.
  • It will not retain excessive fine dead material or loose bark beside a structure.
  • There is enough room to prevent contact with windows, roofs, fences and other plants.
  • The planting plan includes a low-fuel break and an access route for inspection and response.
  • Council, state fire authority and planning requirements have been checked.
  • A maintenance schedule covers grass, pruning, litter, gutters and drought stress.
  • The garden supports, rather than replaces, a documented bushfire survival and evacuation plan.

The most defensible recommendation is therefore not a universal species ranking. Choose locally appropriate natives with relatively lower-flammability traits, place them in separated and maintainable zones, and keep fuel low throughout the fire season. That combination is more reliable than trusting any label that implies a plant can be fireproof.
