Lossless Scaling can change how an old TV episode looks on a PC, but the available evidence does not establish that it produces a better result than an official remaster. It is a scaling and frame-generation tool—not a restoration of the original program. Whether its output looks preferable depends on the source, settings, display, and viewer.
What Lossless Scaling does—and what it does not
Lossless Scaling was designed primarily to scale windowed games to full screen. Its listed scaling methods include LS1, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), NVIDIA Image Scaling, integer scaling, nearest neighbor, xBR, Anime4K, Sharp Bilinear, and Bicubic CAS. The product overview recommends different methods for different game styles, including Anime4K for cartoons or anime; those are vendor recommendations, not proof of superior results on archival television footage. Lossless Scaling’s product overview describes its scaling and machine-learning-based frame-generation features.
Scaling can alter apparent sharpness and edges as an image is enlarged. Frame generation creates intermediate frames to change perceived motion smoothness. Neither operation, by itself, recovers detail absent from the video source or reproduces the choices made during a restoration. A processed image can look more pleasing to one viewer while also introducing artifacts or departing from the remaster’s intended presentation.

A community-maintained guide describes using Lossless Scaling with local players such as VLC, MPV, and KMPlayer, as well as browser video. This is community guidance, not an official guarantee of video-specific support. The guide’s general workflow is to run the target app windowed or borderless, then select that window with the Scale button or hotkey. For local video, it advises resizing the player to the video’s original size before applying a scaler when upscaling is desired. For browser video, it describes options including picture-in-picture, scaling fullscreen video, or using Crop Pixels. The community guide should be checked against the version of the software and player in use, since labels and behavior can change.

Lossless Scaling’s frame-generation feature is separate from scaling. The developer introduced LSFG 1.0 in January 2024 as a machine-learning frame generator that can be used with or without scaling. The developer’s historical guidance recommended a 60 FPS source on a 120 Hz display for best quality, while noting that 30 FPS and 60 Hz could work in some games up to 1080p. Those recommendations were game-oriented and should not be treated as tested settings for television playback. The January 2024 LSFG announcement gives that guidance.
Why “better than the remaster” is not an objective verdict
A fair comparison needs the same episode and scene, and it needs to identify what each version actually is. An official remaster may use a different source, crop, color grade, or restoration approach than a viewer’s video file. Without naming the show, release, and source, there is no way to determine whether a visible difference comes from Lossless Scaling, the underlying video, or the remaster’s choices.

There is no matched comparison here of a named TV show and official remaster, so a general claim that Lossless Scaling beats remastering is not established. “Looks better” can mean sharper edges, smoother movement, preferred color, or fewer distracting defects—and those judgments can conflict. Interpolation may improve apparent smoothness while producing motion artifacts; sharpening or scaling can make edges more prominent without adding original detail.

In June 2025, the developer said LSFG 3.1 reduced ghosting and object flicker and improved border handling. It introduced Performance Mode, which the developer said could reduce GPU load by up to 2× depending on hardware and settings, with a slight image-quality reduction. These are vendor claims about the feature, not independent measurements on TV content. The developer’s Steam announcements also describe Adaptive Frame Generation as adjusting fractional multipliers toward a target frame rate, with possible higher GPU load and slightly lower image quality than fixed-multiplier mode; capture-queue choices trade latency against handling variable capture performance. The announcements say LSFG 3 disables frame generation below a 10 FPS base rate.

In its January 2025 LSFG 3 announcement, the developer reported 40% lower GPU load in X2 mode than LSFG 2 non-performance mode, over 45% lower GPU load for multipliers above X2, and approximately 24% better end-to-end latency in an OSLTT test at 40 base FPS and X2. These are vendor-reported results tied to those comparisons, not evidence about old television shows. The same announcement’s recommendations for base frame rates and locking a game’s frame rate are gaming guidance, not validated video settings. The LSFG 3 announcement provides the stated comparisons.

- Program and release: Name the show, episode, exact remaster edition, and the scene used.
- Source: Identify whether the Lossless Scaling input came from a disc, stream, or local file, and state its resolution and frame rate.
- Playback chain: Name the player, Lossless Scaling version, scaling method, and any frame-generation or crop settings.
- Display: State the display’s resolution and refresh rate, and whether both versions were viewed on the same display under the same conditions.
- Observed differences: Separate perceived detail and edge artifacts from motion smoothness and interpolation artifacts. Explain what “better” means to you rather than presenting preference as a restoration verdict.
Showing the same scene side by side under consistent display conditions makes a personal comparison more inspectable. It still does not turn a subjective preference into proof that one version is universally superior.
