Choose a looter shooter if your main motivation is collecting better equipment and refining a persistent build over many missions. Choose an extraction shooter if you prefer high-stakes runs in which scavenging, judging risk, and escaping with the loot are the central challenge.
The labels describe a game’s center of gravity rather than rigid rules. Some games combine both approaches, and death penalties, player-versus-player exposure, and progression systems vary by game and mode. The comparison below shows what each loop feels like, what to check before buying, and how games such as The Division 2 and ARC Raiders fit the categories.
What is the difference between a looter shooter and an extraction shooter?
Looter shooters make long-term progression the main reward
A looter shooter is a shooter built around finding, comparing, and upgrading equipment. Missions and activities provide weapons, armor, mods, or other drops; you decide which items improve your character and which become materials, currency, or dismantled junk. The compelling question is usually, “What can I equip or build next?”

A successful mission may add a weapon to your collection, increase a stat, unlock a set bonus, or provide resources for future upgrades. Repeating an activity is worthwhile because you are pursuing a better roll, a missing set piece, or a combination that changes how your build plays.

Ubisoft describes The Division 2 as a shooter RPG with customizable weapons, armor, gear sets, and exotic items. Its campaign, cooperative activities, and player-versus-player modes all sit around that persistent equipment progression. You can therefore approach it as a progression-focused shooter even though one of its areas uses extraction mechanics.
Extraction shooters make the run-and-return decision the main reward
An extraction shooter starts each run with uncertainty. You enter a dangerous map, search for valuable items, complete optional or required objectives, react to enemies and other players, and decide when to leave. Loot only becomes reliably useful once you reach an extraction point and complete the escape.
The tension comes from having something to lose. Staying longer can produce better finds, but every additional fight, noise event, or trip through the map creates another chance to die or miss the extraction window. The most satisfying moment is often not discovering an item; it is returning safely with that item while carrying the consequences of your decisions.

Embark describes ARC Raiders as “a multiplayer extraction adventure, set in a lethal future earth, ravaged by a mysterious mechanized threat known as ARC.” Its loop combines scavenging with hostile machines and rival Raiders, followed by extraction of the loot you decide to risk carrying.
The categories overlap
Genre names are informal. A game can have a persistent arsenal and still include an extraction mode, or use per-run scavenging inside a broader role-playing structure. The Division 2 is a clear example: its Dark Zone is a player-versus-environment-versus-player area where contaminated loot must be extracted before it can be safely used. The main game remains progression-oriented, but that mode adds the suspense of an extraction shooter.
Do not assume every extraction shooter deletes every item on death, or that every looter shooter avoids player combat. Read the rules for the specific game and mode.

Side-by-side comparison
| Question | Looter shooter | Extraction shooter |
|---|---|---|
| Primary satisfaction | Building a stronger character and collecting desirable gear over time | Making a profitable run and escaping with what you found |
| Typical reward timing | After a mission or activity, with progress retained between sessions | After successful extraction; items may be lost or reduced if the run fails |
| Failure stakes | Often limited to mission failure, time, or consumables; exact penalties vary | Usually more immediate risk to carried loot, equipment, or run progress; exact protection rules vary |
| Player combat | May be absent, optional, cooperative, or concentrated in a separate mode | Frequently central to the map’s uncertainty, alongside computer-controlled threats |
| Progression | Persistent levels, gear, builds, collections, and unlocks are usually prominent | Often combines a persistent stash or upgrades with temporary run inventories |
| Session shape | Activities can often be selected independently, with a clear end after a mission | A run continues until you extract, die, or otherwise leave; staying longer increases both opportunity and exposure |
| Best fit for | Players who enjoy optimization, repetition with a purpose, and gradual power growth | Players who enjoy uncertainty, risk assessment, map knowledge, and high-pressure decisions |
| Solo and squad play | Depends on the game; campaign and cooperative options are common | Depends on the game; solo rules, squad size, and matchmaking must be checked individually |
Which type is right for you?
Pick a looter shooter if you want a reliable progression project
- You like comparing several versions of the same weapon or armor piece.
- You want yesterday’s successful mission to make tomorrow’s character permanently stronger.
- You enjoy testing a build, adjusting its statistics, and chasing a particular set or rare item.
- You prefer to repeat content without risking your entire haul each time.
- You want a mixture of solo missions, cooperative play, and possibly separate PvP activities.
This style rewards patience. A drop that is not useful immediately may provide crafting materials or complete a collection later. The emotional rhythm is steady: acquire, evaluate, equip, optimize, and pursue the next improvement.
Pick an extraction shooter if you want decisions under pressure
- You enjoy entering a map without knowing exactly what encounter or reward comes next.
- You like deciding whether a valuable find justifies one more room, fight, or objective.
- You find successful escapes more memorable than guaranteed rewards.
- You are comfortable losing some carried resources when a run goes badly.
- You enjoy reading sound, movement, timing, and other players’ likely intentions.
Extraction games reward judgment more than raw collection. A modest haul brought home safely can be better than a spectacular item lost because you stayed for one unnecessary fight.
Choose a hybrid when you want both loops
A hybrid is appropriate if you want a persistent build but also want occasional high-stakes missions. Check whether the game keeps the modes clearly separated, because the same title may feel relaxed in its campaign and intensely punitive in a Dark Zone or extraction playlist.
Failure stakes: what do you lose when you die?
“Do you lose your loot when you die?” has no universal answer. Before committing to a game, identify four separate categories:
- Items carried into the run: Some games protect a basic loadout, while others put selected equipment at risk.
- Items found during the run: Newly scavenged goods may remain temporary until extraction, or may be kept under specific insurance or storage rules.
- Persistent progression: Character levels, unlocked abilities, recipes, or account-wide upgrades may survive even when physical loot does not.
- Currency and resources: A game may protect some currencies, cap losses, or use separate wallets for safe and at-risk funds.
Read the death, insurance, stash, and extraction explanations in the game’s current tutorial or help menu. A store description rarely explains every exception, and a rule can differ between a standard map, a special event, and a PvP-focused zone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to evaluate a death penalty
- Ask what a new player can lose in the first few hours, not only what an expert can risk.
- Check whether basic replacement equipment is easy to obtain after a failed run.
- Find out whether a squadmate can revive you, carry your gear, or help you extract.
- Look for protected storage, safe containers, insurance, or guaranteed quest rewards.
- Determine whether quitting early counts as a failure or allows a normal extraction.
How PvP changes the experience
In looter shooters
Player combat may be optional, confined to a playlist, or woven into a shared area. You can often spend most of your time fighting computer-controlled enemies and improving a build, then enter a PvP activity when you want a different challenge. That separation makes the genre suitable for players who want progression without constant ambushes, provided the game actually offers a PvE path.

In extraction shooters
Other players can affect a run even when you are focused on computer-controlled enemies. Gunfire and movement may reveal your location; a team that arrives after your battle can take advantage of your reduced health or depleted ammunition. Some games permit temporary cooperation, while others make every squad a potential opponent.
ARC Raiders illustrates this uncertainty: PlayStation’s description notes that battles create noise other Raiders may hear. Sound therefore becomes a strategic resource. Winning a fight can attract a second threat, so the correct response may be looting quickly and relocating rather than searching every defeated enemy.
Progression and gear: permanent build or temporary haul?
Persistent build progression
In a looter shooter, the inventory is usually a long-term project. You can compare attributes, select complementary bonuses, and replace one component without discarding the entire character. The progression question is, “Which combination gives me the next capability?”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This structure suits players who enjoy spreadsheets, experimentation, and long-term goals. It can also create a learning curve: a higher item level is not automatically better if its traits conflict with your play style.
Run-based progression
Extraction shooters divide equipment into what you own permanently and what you are risking now. A cheap loadout can be sensible when learning a map; an expensive loadout may improve your odds but make a death more painful. The temporary inventory forces you to value space, weight, noise, healing items, and the opportunity cost of carrying a low-value object.
Loot can serve several purposes: selling it for currency, crafting equipment, completing a contract, upgrading a base, or using it during a future run. Learn the destination of each item before filling your limited slots.

Session commitment and pacing
Looter-shooter sessions
Activities are often modular. You might complete a short mission, sort equipment, adjust a build, and stop with your progress intact. Longer campaigns or raids can still demand sustained attention, but the basic loop usually offers clear activity boundaries.

A run has a natural tension curve: enter, gather information, take a risk, decide whether the bag is good enough, and extract. A “quick game” can become longer when you are far from an exit or when a valuable objective changes your plan. Allow time to finish the run rather than treating extraction as an instant menu action.
For players with limited time, check whether the game offers forgiving extraction points, solo queues, pause options, or a way to abandon a run without severe penalties. Those details matter more than the broad genre label.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Solo play, squads, and communication
Solo considerations
Solo play can be entirely viable in a looter shooter when missions scale or allow you to choose your difficulty. In an extraction shooter, solo players must handle scouting, combat, healing, inventory management, and extraction decisions alone. That can deliver a focused experience but leaves no teammate to revive you or watch another angle.
Squad considerations
A squad adds coordination as well as firepower. Decide who carries medical supplies, who watches the rear, and when the team will leave. Agree on a retreat rule before someone finds a rare item; otherwise one player may continue searching while everyone else is ready to extract.
ARC Raiders supports solo play and teams of two or three, with cross-platform social play across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC according to Embark’s official description. PlayStation presents it as an online, multiplayer-only game that can be played alone or in those small teams. Confirm current platform and matchmaking details before purchase because online features can change.

PlayStation lists the PULSE Elite wireless headset with a retractable microphone alongside its ARC Raiders information. Treat a headset as a comfort and communication accessory; platform compatibility, fit, budget, and audio preferences determine whether any particular model suits you.
How to choose a game before you buy or install it
- Read the death rule first. Locate the current explanation of carried gear, scavenged loot, protected storage, and extraction failure.
- Map the PvP exposure. Determine whether player combat is central, optional, limited to one mode, or absent. Do not infer this from the game’s marketing genre alone.
- Identify the persistent layer. Look for character levels, build customization, a stash, crafting, base upgrades, or a collection system that survives individual runs.
- Check the session shape. Find out how long a normal activity or run lasts and whether you can leave safely when your available time changes.
- Verify solo and squad support. Confirm solo rules, maximum team size, matchmaking, cross-platform play, and whether progress is shared among teammates.
- Decide what kind of repetition you enjoy. If repeating missions to improve a build sounds satisfying, favor a looter shooter. If repeating maps to improve your decisions sounds satisfying, favor an extraction shooter.
- Check current availability. Platforms, online requirements, editions, and modes can change. Use the current publisher or platform listing for the final decision.
Where the main examples fit
The Division 2
The Division 2 is primarily a shooter RPG built around customizable weapons, armor, gear sets, and exotic items. Its campaign and cooperative content support the persistent-progression side of the comparison, while its PvP options provide a different pace. The Dark Zone adds a PvEvP extraction layer: contaminated loot must be extracted before it becomes safe. It is therefore better described as a looter shooter with an extraction-oriented mode than as a pure extraction shooter.
ARC Raiders
ARC Raiders is the clearer extraction example. The stated premise is a lethal future Earth threatened by mechanized ARC machines, with players scavenging while dealing with those machines and rival Raiders. Valuable loot can be sold or crafted into gear and upgrades, and the run’s outcome depends on getting out. Solo play and two- or three-player squads are supported, with cross-platform social play across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC described by Embark.
Destiny 2
Destiny 2 is a familiar progression-oriented shooter example. Bungie’s available description characterizes it as a multiplayer first-person shooter with solo and cooperative gameplay and an ongoing story. Those broad traits illustrate the looter-shooter side, but current activities, progression rules, prices, editions, and platform details should be checked on the live product page before making a specific recommendation.
A practical decision in one minute
Choose the looter-shooter side when you would rather finish a session with a stronger, more specialized character even after a routine mission. Choose the extraction-shooter side when the most exciting question is whether you can bring this particular haul home. If both statements sound equally appealing, look for a hybrid with clearly documented modes and start with the lower-risk activities while you learn its loss rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all extraction shooters PvP games?
No. Some include optional, limited, or mode-specific player combat. Check whether the game uses shared maps, separate PvP playlists, or purely cooperative runs.
Can a looter shooter have extraction mechanics?
Yes. A progression-focused game can include a mode where contaminated or temporary loot must be extracted, as with the Dark Zone structure in The Division 2.
Is an extraction shooter harder than a looter shooter?
Difficulty depends on the game’s enemies, matchmaking, and penalties. Extraction shooters usually feel more punishing because a failed run can affect carried loot, while looter shooters more often protect long-term progress.
Should I play solo or with a squad?
Solo play gives you full control but removes revival and shared responsibilities. Squads improve information and combat coverage while adding coordination demands; verify each game’s team size and solo rules.
