OpenWork is one project to investigate if you want a free, open-source desktop alternative to Claude Cowork. Its makers say the app runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux, but you supply your own model-provider keys, so using the app may still cost money. The available evidence does not establish that it is the unnamed tool in the original headline or that switching to it improves productivity.
What “free” means for an open-source Cowork alternative
OpenWork describes its desktop app as free and open source. That describes the app, not necessarily the complete cost of running tasks: users bring their own model-provider keys, and provider or API usage may be billable. OpenWork also lists separate cloud and team offerings. Check the current terms and pricing for the exact service you plan to use; those details can change.
Another project, Open Cowork, describes itself on GitHub as an open-source Claude Cowork alternative, supports bring-your-own-key use, and identifies an MIT license. Those are project-stated details, not evidence of reliability, broad adoption, or feature parity.
What OpenWork says its desktop app can do
OpenWork says its desktop application supports macOS, Windows, and Linux and can connect to models from multiple providers. Its feature list includes browser automation and scheduled tasks, with scheduled tasks marked alpha. Treat availability labels as meaningful: a listed or experimental feature is not the same as a mature, generally available capability. Confirm current platform releases, supported models, and feature status before installing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OpenWork also distinguishes desktop use from optional hosted services. According to the company, desktop files remain on the user’s machine while prompts are sent to the model provider selected by the user. Hosted workers are optional. This is the vendor’s description, not an independent security audit; the model provider still receives prompts, and a hosted worker changes where execution occurs.
How to compare it with Claude Cowork
An open-source label alone does not show that a project can do the same work in the same way. Compare the specific workflow you care about across these dimensions:

A September 2026 independent comparison guide notes that free downloads can still involve API costs and that open-source projects differ in setup and security. It discusses OpenWork, Eigent, Open Cowork, and other projects, but a roundup is not a substitute for each project’s current documentation.

Take precautions before giving an agent access to files
Tools that act on files or connected services can make consequential changes. Start with a disposable copy of a small task rather than an important working folder. Read the app’s permission and security documentation, understand approval behavior, and confirm how to recover or undo changes before expanding access.

A Hacker News comment attributed to Felix Rieseberg, who says he works on Claude Cowork and Claude Code at Anthropic, describes Cowork as using the Claude Code agent harness inside a Linux VM, with additional sandboxing, network controls, and filesystem mounts. That is an employee’s community-thread comment, not a formal product specification or security audit. It should not be treated as proof that another project has equivalent isolation.

The evidence available here does not identify which alternative the headline’s author used, verify a switch from Cowork, or measure a productivity gain. An individual may report a better experience, but a meaningful comparison should say which tasks were completed, over what period, and how time or output quality was assessed. Without that information, “getting more done” is a personal claim, not a demonstrated result.
