@Data is not automatically incompatible with JPA, but it bundles behavior that can conflict with an entity’s constructor, mutability, and identity requirements. Prefer narrower Lombok annotations on entities so you can choose those behaviors deliberately.
What does Lombok @Data generate?
Project Lombok describes @Data as a shortcut for @Getter, @Setter, @RequiredArgsConstructor, @ToString, and @EqualsAndHashCode. In practice, it generates getters, setters for non-final fields, a required-arguments constructor, and implementations of toString, equals, and hashCode. The latter methods use fields by default. See Lombok’s @Data documentation.
That breadth is the concern: a class-level annotation makes choices about construction, mutation, logging output, and equality all at once, even though an entity may need a different choice for each.

The released Jakarta Persistence 3.2 specification requires an entity class to be non-final, to have a public or protected no-argument constructor, and to have no final methods or persistent instance variables. The persistence provider uses that no-argument constructor to instantiate the entity. See the Jakarta Persistence 3.2 specification.

These requirements do not make @Data categorically invalid. They do mean you should verify what Lombok actually generates and whether its defaults suit the entity. The Jakarta Persistence 4.0 API documentation is under development, so the released 3.2 specification is the stable reference for these rules.
Why can the generated constructor be a problem?
@Data includes @RequiredArgsConstructor, not an unconditional public or protected no-argument constructor. The generated required-arguments constructor covers uninitialized final fields and fields marked @NonNull. If there are no such fields, the generated constructor may happen to have no parameters; that coincidence is not a reliable way to express the constructor JPA requires. An explicitly declared constructor also prevents @Data from generating its constructor.

If you use Lombok on an entity, declare the no-argument constructor explicitly or use @NoArgsConstructor with appropriate visibility. Lombok documents that annotation for frameworks that require a no-argument constructor, including Hibernate. See Lombok’s constructor annotations documentation.
Why are generated equality and hash code risky?
By default, Lombok’s equals and hashCode include non-static, non-transient fields. That can be a poor fit for entity identity: fields may change during the entity’s lifecycle, and associations or other mutable state may not belong in an identity comparison. If a field used in hashCode changes while an entity is in a hash-based collection, lookups can behave unexpectedly.

Entity equality needs an explicit policy: decide which values establish identity, when those values become available, and how the policy behaves across inheritance and persistence-provider proxies. Lombok provides inclusion controls, and its documentation explains that its generated canEqual method can support equality between JPA proxies and their base classes. That proxy support does not make every field-based equality policy appropriate. See Lombok’s equality documentation.
Why can generated toString be misleading?
Lombok’s generated toString uses fields by default. On an entity, that may expose more state than intended or include relationships whose representation is unsuitable for routine diagnostic output. Choose explicitly which fields belong in a string representation; do not assume the default is a safe or useful summary of an entity.

What is a safer Lombok pattern for entities?
Use annotations that express only the behavior the entity should have, then make equality and diagnostic output intentional. For example:

- Constructor: Is there a public or protected no-argument constructor?
- Mutation: Which persistent fields should callers be able to change through setters?
- String output: Which fields are useful and appropriate in
toString, and should associations be excluded? - Equality: Which values define identity, and can they change during the entity lifecycle?
- Compatibility: Does the equality implementation behave as intended with proxies and inheritance?
Lombok’s @Getter, selected @Setter annotations, @NoArgsConstructor, and carefully configured or hand-written equality and string methods let you answer those questions separately.
