To make a logo background transparent, remove or hide the background, preserve transparency in the image, and export in a format that supports it. For most raster logos, PNG is the dependable choice. If the logo is vector artwork, keep an SVG when the destination accepts it. Always check the exported file against both light and dark backgrounds.
What “transparent” means for a logo
A transparent raster image stores transparency in an alpha channel; it is not just a white background that looks blank. GIMP’s documentation explains that an image needs an alpha channel for alpha transparency and that PNG supports it. Its checkerboard preview indicates transparent areas—it is not part of the image. Make a transparent PNG in GIMP

Open the logo and save an editable copy of the source file so you can revise it later.

Remove or hide the background layer. If the background is a flat color that does not appear in the logo, selecting that color may be quick. If the same color appears in the artwork, a simple color selection can remove logo details too; use a mask or carefully trace the logo instead.

Check for an alpha channel. In GIMP 2.10, the manual gives the path Layer → Transparency → Add Alpha Channel when one is absent. Without an alpha channel, clearing pixels may fill them with a color rather than make them transparent.

Export the finished image as PNG. GIMP distinguishes PNG alpha transparency from simple binary transparency and documents PNG as the format for exporting the result.

Open the exported PNG in another application or place it over a contrasting background. Check that the former background is gone and that white parts of the logo remain visible.

Download and inspect the exported file against a contrasting background.

Canva’s Help Center lists transparent-background downloads for Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Business, Canva Education, and Canva for Nonprofits. It also says Canva Docs designs cannot be downloaded with a transparent background. If the option is missing, check the selected file type, design type, and whether the plan supports the feature. These plan names and availability can change; consult Canva’s current help page.
Choose PNG or SVG in Photoshop and other workflows

Photoshop’s documented Export As options include PNG, JPG, GIF, and SVG. The available settings depend on the format; check the destination’s upload requirements before choosing one. See Adobe’s Photoshop export settings and GIMP’s PNG export options.

Fix common transparency problems

A white rectangle remains: Remove or hide the actual background layer or object; covering it with a white shape does not make it transparent. In Canva, select PNG and enable the transparent-background option.

Clearing the background fills it with color: Add an alpha channel before clearing pixels. GIMP documents this as a prerequisite for alpha transparency.

The editor shows transparency, but another app shows a solid background: Verify that you exported a transparency-supporting format with transparency enabled. Reopen the exported file or test it over a colored background.

Soft edges look harsh: Check whether the export used a reduced transparency mode. GIMP’s PNG8 mode allows only transparent or opaque states, so use an export mode that retains alpha levels when semi-transparent edges matter.

Logo details disappeared: The background color may also occur in the logo. Undo the selection and use a mask or manual path selection; inspect fine details at high zoom.

The logo looks jagged when enlarged: Transparency does not improve resolution. Preserve the original vector artwork as SVG when the destination supports it; a raster source does not gain original vector paths through conversion.

Check the finished file before using it

Place the exported file over both a light and a dark background to reveal leftover pixels and missing white artwork.

Confirm that the destination accepts the format and dimensions you exported.

For soft or antialiased edges, confirm the export retained alpha levels rather than reducing transparency to a transparent-or-opaque choice.
