Buy the Logitech MX Master 4 if haptic feedback and the Actions Ring shortcut overlay will change how you work. Choose the MX Master 3S if you want the established MX productivity-mouse layout, documented Quiet Clicks and a lower price. Logitech’s US store listed the MX Master 4 at $119.99 and the MX Master 3S at $89.99 on October 13, 2026, a $30 difference that can change with discounts and stock.

This is a feature and specification comparison rather than a hands-on test. The practical upgrade question is simple: will the MX Master 4’s new controls save you enough friction to justify its premium?

MX Master 4 vs. MX Master 3S at a glance

What the MX Master 4 adds

Haptic feedback on the thumb rest

The MX Master 4 introduces a haptic thumb-rest control. Instead of relying only on a button press, the mouse can provide tactile feedback as you interact with supported controls. That matters most when you work from keyboard and mouse simultaneously, use shortcuts repeatedly, or want confirmation without looking down at your hand.

  • Effortlessly access favorite tools with Actions Ring (2) on this MX Series mouse—a dynamic, customizable overlay adapts to each app, placing most used filters, adjustments, and shortcuts at your cursor
  • Scroll 1,000 lines per second and stop on a pixel with the MagSpeed scroll wheel—Logitech’s fastest (3), quietest, and most precise (4) scrolling experience
  • Enjoy 2X more powerful connectivity (7) with a USB-C dongle, advanced radio chip, and optimized antenna for faster, stronger, reliable performance—or use Bluetooth for more versatility
  • Ergonomic mouse designed for comfort, MX Master 4 keeps you in flow with a natural tilt, intuitive buttons, and a thumb scroll wheel that reduces hand stress for fluid navigation

Haptics are not automatically useful for every buyer. If you rarely customize buttons or prefer a quiet, unobtrusive pointer, the feature may feel like an unnecessary layer. Its value depends on whether the tactile cues become part of your routine.

Actions Ring shortcut overlay

Actions Ring is a software overlay that gives quick access to favorite tools and commands. Logitech positions it as a way to reduce repeated pointer travel: open the ring, choose a configured action, and return to your document or application without moving to a distant toolbar.

Logitech says Actions Ring reduced repetitive mouse movements by up to 63% in a 2025 Ergo Lab study of 37 MX Master mouse users performing eight desktop actions. The result is Logitech’s own finding, not an independently replicated productivity guarantee, and Logitech says outcomes vary according to the shortcuts assigned. A shortcut ring filled with actions you use every few minutes is more likely to help than one filled with commands you seldom need.

Updated physical design

RTINGS’ comparison identifies the MX Master 4 as the successor and describes shape refinements, an added gesture button, and a haptic thumb-rest control. It also describes hard textured plastic replacing the MX Master 3S’s soft-touch rubber coating. Those changes can affect grip preference and hand feel, but they are design descriptions rather than a guarantee that one shape will suit every hand.

Detailed RTINGS test data is partly gated, so this comparison does not turn that page into unsupported claims about measured performance, comfort scores or click latency.

Why the MX Master 3S remains a strong choice

Quiet Clicks are a documented advantage

Logitech specifically calls out Quiet Clicks on the MX Master 3S. That is useful in shared offices, libraries, recording spaces, bedrooms and any setup where repeated clicking is distracting. The MX Master 4’s product material emphasizes haptics, but the available information does not establish an equivalent noise comparison. If quiet operation is a deciding requirement, the 3S has the clearer documented feature.

It already covers the core productivity workflow

The 3S supports Logitech Options+ features including button customization, tracking-speed adjustment, app-specific customizations, Smart Actions and Flow across devices and operating systems. Those tools let you assign different behavior to applications, tune pointer speed and automate repeated sequences without needing the MX Master 4’s newer overlay.

  • Ergonomic mouse designed for comfort, MX Master 4 for Mac keeps you in flow with a natural tilt, intuitive buttons, and a thumb scroll wheel that reduces hand stress for fluid navigation

For many office, writing, spreadsheet, editing and browsing workflows, that established customization is the main benefit people seek from an MX Master mouse. The 4 does not make the 3S’s configurable buttons obsolete; it adds another way to reach commands.

Glass tracking is explicitly qualified

Logitech lists an 8,000 DPI optical sensor for the MX Master 3S and says it can track on glass with a minimum glass thickness of 4 mm. If you work at a glass desk or frequently move between unusual surfaces, that qualification is more useful than a generic claim that a sensor works “almost anywhere.”

Tracking, controls and customization compared

Resolution is not the main differentiator

Logitech lists the MX Master 4 at 200–8,000 DPI, while the MX Master 3S is identified with an 8,000 DPI optical sensor. Both therefore cover the high-resolution tracking range expected from a modern productivity mouse. DPI alone does not determine comfort, pointer acceleration, surface compatibility or whether a mouse feels precise in your operating system.

Actions Ring versus familiar button assignments

The MX Master 3S approach is direct: press a physical control that you have assigned in Options+. The MX Master 4 adds an overlay-based route for favorite tools. The better method depends on how you remember commands.

  • Choose the 4’s Actions Ring if you want a visible radial menu, use many application-specific shortcuts, or repeatedly switch between tools.
  • Choose the 3S if you prefer fixed button locations, operate mostly from a small set of commands, or do not want an overlay to appear while working.
  • Choose either model if your priority is simply changing pointer speed, assigning buttons or using cross-device workflows through Logitech’s software.

Haptics are an interaction feature, not a faster sensor

The MX Master 4’s haptic feedback does not, by itself, raise the listed maximum DPI or prove lower input latency. Its purpose is tactile confirmation and a different way to invoke controls. Treat it as a workflow feature rather than a specification upgrade to the pointing engine.

Manufacturer specifications and what they do—and do not—prove

Logitech’s MX Master 4 support specification lists the following figures:

MX Master 4 specification Listed value Qualification
Dimensions 128.15 × 88.35 × 50.8 mm Manufacturer specification
Weight 150 g Manufacturer specification
DPI range 200–8,000 DPI Manufacturer specification
Wireless technology Bluetooth Low Energy Manufacturer specification
Battery Rechargeable 650 mAh Capacity listed by Logitech
Battery life Up to 70 days Manufacturer claim; real life depends on use and conditions
Wireless range 10 m Manufacturer specification
Report rate 125 Hz Manufacturer specification

The cited MX Master 3S information confirms an 8,000 DPI sensor, Quiet Clicks, glass tracking with a 4 mm minimum thickness and Options+ features. It does not provide comparable weight, battery-capacity, battery-life, wireless-range or report-rate figures for the 3S in the same source set. A fair comparison therefore should not claim that the 4 lasts longer, weighs less or reports faster than the 3S.

The 4’s premium is easiest to justify when you will use the Actions Ring and haptic controls several times a day. If you buy it and leave those features at their defaults, you may be paying for capabilities that do not change your work. The 3S delivers the lower-cost route to customizable buttons, app-specific settings, Flow and a high-resolution sensor, while adding Quiet Clicks.

Which mouse should a first-time buyer choose?

Buy the MX Master 4 when these conditions fit

  • You want haptic confirmation while invoking controls.
  • You regularly repeat commands across several desktop applications.
  • A radial Actions Ring is more appealing than memorizing several physical-button assignments.
  • You are comfortable paying the observed $30 premium for newer interaction features.
  • You have checked that your operating system and current Logitech software support the Actions Ring features you intend to use.

For this buyer, the MX Master 4 is the more forward-looking choice. Its advantage is not a different basic category of mouse; it is the possibility of reducing friction in a shortcut-heavy workflow.

Buy the MX Master 3S when these conditions fit

  • Quiet Clicks are important in your environment.
  • You want the established MX Master layout and do not need an overlay.
  • You mainly need button remapping, pointer-speed control, app-specific profiles, Smart Actions or Flow.
  • You want to spend less and the current $89.99-class price is available.
  • You track on glass and value Logitech’s explicit 4 mm minimum-glass qualification.

For this buyer, the 3S is not merely a budget fallback. It retains the central productivity features and adds a documented quiet-click design.

Should an MX Master 3S owner upgrade?

Upgrade only when the MX Master 4 solves a workflow problem you can name. Your 3S already provides customizable controls, an 8,000 DPI sensor, Quiet Clicks and the Options+ ecosystem. Replacing it solely because a newer model exists is unlikely to produce a meaningful change in ordinary pointing and clicking.

An upgrade is easier to justify if:

  • You repeatedly move the pointer across large screens to reach toolbars or palettes.
  • You want tactile feedback from a thumb-rest control.
  • You have tested your preferred Actions Ring assignments in your daily applications and expect to use them often.
  • The 3S’s soft-touch coating or familiar control layout is a reason you are actively seeking a different feel.

Keep the 3S if:

  • Your current button assignments already cover your work.
  • Quiet operation is more valuable than new shortcut access.
  • You rarely use application-specific actions or Smart Actions.
  • The MX Master 4’s overlay and haptics do not address a specific annoyance.

A practical test is to list the three mouse actions you repeat most often. If Actions Ring or haptic feedback would remove a real step from those actions, the 4 has a concrete case. If not, keep the 3S until it no longer meets your needs.

Compatibility and setup considerations

Logitech describes customization through Logi Options+. Before purchase, verify the current software requirements for your operating system and confirm that the Actions Ring is supported on the version you plan to use. Feature availability can depend on the software release, operating system and application being customized.

  1. Install the current Logi Options+ release from Logitech’s official software channel for your operating system.
  2. Connect the mouse using the supported wireless method and complete the device setup.
  3. Check for firmware updates before assigning shortcuts.
  4. For an MX Master 4, enable the haptic controls and configure the Actions Ring with commands you use frequently rather than filling it with rarely needed actions.
  5. For an MX Master 3S, assign buttons by application, set tracking speed and configure Smart Actions or Flow only where they remove a repeated step.
  6. Test the assignments in each important application. A shortcut that works in one program may have a different meaning, or no effect, in another.

A decision checklist

  • Need haptics? Choose MX Master 4.
  • Need an Actions Ring? Choose MX Master 4.
  • Need Quiet Clicks? Choose MX Master 3S.
  • Want the lower observed price? Choose MX Master 3S, subject to current pricing.
  • Already own a 3S? Upgrade only for a specific haptic or shortcut workflow.
  • Work on glass? The 3S has Logitech’s explicit 4 mm minimum-glass qualification.
  • Comparing battery or weight? Use the MX Master 4’s published figures, but do not infer unverified 3S values.

The short answer is therefore conditional: the MX Master 4 is the better buy for haptic controls and fast shortcut access; the MX Master 3S is the better value for Quiet Clicks and established customization at a lower observed price.
