To log in to your Wi-Fi router, connect your phone or computer to that router, open a browser, and enter its local management address in the address bar. Then sign in with the router’s administrator credentials—not your Wi-Fi password or ISP login. The address and credentials vary by model and provider, so check the router label, setup records, or official instructions for your exact device.

How to log in to your router

  1. Connect to the router you want to manage. Join its Wi-Fi network or connect a computer to a LAN port with an Ethernet cable. Ethernet is useful if the wireless connection is unstable or you are about to change Wi-Fi settings that could disconnect you. TP-Link says you must be connected to the router’s network by Wi-Fi or Ethernet to access its login page: TP-Link router login instructions.
  2. Find the correct management address. Check the router label, manual, provider instructions, or official support page for the exact model. Type the address or manufacturer hostname into your browser’s address bar—not into a search engine. Some routers use a local IP address; others also provide a hostname.
  3. Open the login page. Press Enter after typing the address. If the page does not load, verify that you are connected to the intended router and recheck the address. Try another documented address or connect by Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unreliable.
  4. Enter the administrator username and password. Use the credentials created during setup or those printed on the router label when the model uses label credentials. If this is the first login, the setup flow may ask you to create an administrator password.
  5. Keep the admin password distinct and secure. It controls router settings; it is not necessarily the password devices use to join Wi-Fi, nor your ISP account password. Store it securely so you can manage the router later.

Which router login address should you use?

There is no single address that works for every router. These are examples from official support instructions, not universal defaults:

Router or provider Example management address Scope
TP-Link tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1 Examples listed in TP-Link support instructions; check your model.
Verizon gateway mynetworksettings.com or https://192.168.1.1 Verizon gateway instructions: Access the Verizon router admin page.
Linksys https://192.168.1.1 or myrouter.local Examples in Linksys web-interface instructions: Access a Linksys router’s web interface.
D-Link DIR-878 192.168.0.1 or dlinkrouter.local Specific to the DIR-878 instructions: D-Link DIR-878 login instructions.

A router’s local address may have been changed, and some networks use a different device as the gateway. If an example fails, do not keep guessing: consult the instructions for the router model or ISP-provided gateway you actually have.

Which password does the router login require?

The sign-in page asks for the router’s administrator credentials. These may have been set during initial setup, printed on a label for some models, or configured by the internet provider. Defaults and setup requirements differ; there is no safe universal username-and-password combination to assume.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Router administrator password: manages configuration, including network settings.
  • Wi-Fi password: lets phones, computers, and other devices join the wireless network.
  • ISP account credentials: belong to your provider’s account or service and are not automatically the router admin login.

For a first-time setup, follow the model’s prompts rather than searching for a generic default password. For stronger protection, ASUS recommends an administrator password longer than 10 characters that mixes capital letters, numbers, and special characters; this is ASUS guidance, not a universal requirement. See ASUS guidance for router sign-in problems and NETGEAR’s admin-password instructions.

What to do if you cannot access the router

The login page does not load

  • Confirm your device is connected to the router you intend to manage, rather than a neighboring Wi-Fi network or a mobile-data connection.
  • Check the address against the label, manual, provider instructions, or official model support page.
  • Try the manufacturer’s documented hostname or IP alternative.
  • If the wireless connection is unstable, connect a computer to a LAN port with Ethernet and try again.

The username or password is rejected

Check setup notes and the router label, and make sure you are not entering the Wi-Fi password or ISP account password in the administrator login. Some routers require an administrator password to be created during setup. The manufacturer’s instructions explain the requirements for its models; for example, see ASUS instructions for opening the router settings page.

You changed the admin password and forgot it

Check the exact model’s recovery procedure before resetting. In the cases covered by their support pages, TP-Link and ASUS direct users who have forgotten the login password to reset the router; Linksys likewise describes a physical factory reset when no password works. A factory reset returns settings to their defaults, so you will need to set up the router again. Follow the instructions for your device, such as TP-Link’s forgotten-login-password procedure or the ASUS sign-in troubleshooting steps.

Why Ethernet can help during setup

A wired connection can keep access to the router’s management page available if Wi-Fi is unstable or if a change to wireless security or network settings interrupts the session. D-Link recommends wired setup for its DIR-878 instructions, noting that it can prevent the connection from being dropped while changing security or wireless settings: D-Link DIR-878 login instructions. Ethernet is optional; a stable connection to the router’s own Wi-Fi is also suitable for ordinary sign-in.
