Notifications are short updates that let an app share information while it is inactive. In one common technical framing, they are either local—created on your device—or remote (push)—sent by a server through a platform delivery service. That is separate from how an alert appears: a banner, lock-screen item, badge, sound, or notification-center entry.
What are the two main types of notifications?
The terms local and remote describe where a notification originates and how it reaches your device. They do not describe its content or guarantee how quickly it will appear.
| Feature | Local notification | Remote or push notification |
|---|---|---|
| Where it originates | The app on your device | The app publisher’s server |
| What triggers it | An app-defined condition, such as a time or location | A server-side event or decision |
| How it reaches you | Created on-device and presented under system rules | Sent through a platform push service |
| Example | A scheduled reminder | A timely sports score update |
Apple documents both kinds of notifications and explains that Apple devices receive remote notifications through Apple Push Notification service (APNs). Apple’s User Notifications documentation describes the platform’s notification model.

A local notification is created by an app on the device. The app can schedule it for a particular time or associate it with a condition, such as a location. A reminder scheduled by an app is a familiar example; the exact options depend on that app and the operating system.
Remote or push notifications
A remote notification starts on a server, which sends it through a platform delivery service to a device. For Apple devices, that service is APNs. A score update is an example of timely app information that may be delivered this way.

Is email a notification type?
Email and push are not opposites in the same classification. Email describes content and a service; push describes a delivery method. An email app can alert you about a new message using a notification, while the message itself remains email. The alert may appear on a phone or, in supported circumstances, on a computer. Google explains Gmail notification settings for mobile devices and the web in its guide to getting notifications for new email.
How do notification settings and permissions work?
Notification access and presentation are controlled by both the app and the operating system. You may be able to allow or block an app’s notifications, choose alerting or silent behavior, and adjust presentation styles. Available controls and menu names vary by device, operating-system version, and app.

Android app notifications
On Android 13 and later, apps must request the POST_NOTIFICATIONS runtime permission. You can also manage notification behavior for apps in Android settings; some devices let you select alerting or silent delivery and control notification types. See Google’s Android notification controls and the Android Developers overview of notifications and conversations. The exact path varies by device maker and Android version.
Gmail notifications
Gmail has its own notification settings, separate from the phone’s app-level permission. Google documents account-specific settings for Android and iOS. On desktop, browser notifications are supported when you are signed in to Gmail and have it open in a supported browser. Use Google’s Gmail notification instructions for the relevant device and account.

Web push notifications
A website or web app that supports push must obtain permission and establish a push subscription; a service worker can receive messages, and the Notifications API can display them. Apple’s documentation lists support for Home Screen web apps on iOS 16.4 or later and Safari webpages on macOS 13 or later. Those version statements are specific to Apple’s documented platforms; consult Apple’s web push documentation for the workflow and platform details.

- Confirm the account’s Gmail notification setting. Gmail settings can be account-specific, so check the account you are waiting for.
- Check the device’s app permission. If notifications are blocked for Gmail at the operating-system level, Gmail’s own setting may not be enough.
- Review the chosen alert style. Notifications may be silent or presented somewhere other than as a banner, depending on device settings.
- For desktop alerts, confirm Gmail is open and you are signed in. Google’s desktop notification guidance specifies these conditions and supported browsers.
Menu labels and available options can change across app and operating-system versions; Google’s current Gmail help page provides device-specific steps.

Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines put the purpose succinctly: “A notification gives people timely, high-value information they can understand at a glance.” The guidance recommends concise, informative alerts, avoiding duplicate notices for the same event, and keeping sensitive or confidential details out of notifications because someone else may see the device. When appropriate, an alert can also offer an action that completes a simple task without opening the app. Read Apple’s notification design guidance.
